Dr. Albert J. Kazis

Albert J. Kazis DMD- Of Brookline, formerly of Newton, on April 23 at his home surrounded by his family, one month short of his 90th birthday. Dr. Kazis was a noted prosthodontist and professor of dental medicine, and the author of a seminal book on prosthodontics. Born in Cambridge, he received his undergraduate education from Boston University, his D.M.D. degree from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and his masters degree in public health at the Harvard School of Public Health. He taught Prosthodontics at Tufts, then entered into private practice in Boston with his father, Harry Kazis, in 1952. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in 1967. He continued to teach in the dental schools at Tufts and Harvard, and was assistant dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine from 1968 to 1971, and chair of the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry at Harvard from 1988 to 1994. Dr. Kazis lectured widely on mouth rehabilitation in the U.S. and Latin America, was a leader in a number of dental organizations, and wrote two books on prosthetic dentistry, the first with his father. He retired from private practice in 1998. From 1995 until 2000 he served as an appointee of Governor William Weld to the Board of Registration in Dentistry from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dr. Kazis was a trustee of Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Newton. He was the beloved husband for 65 years of Rose Leah (Etscovitz) Kazis. He was devoted father of Lewis Kazis and his wife Beatrix Thomas, Joel D. Kazis and his wife Sara E. Nathan, and Ellen Kazis-Walker and Don Walker. He was the loving grandfather of David Kazis, Josh Nathan-Kazis and his wife Emily Seife, Saul Nathan-Kazis, Rebecca Walker, and Ben Walker. He was the cherished brother of Agnes Young, Earle W. Kazis, and the late Shirlee Shrago. Funeral will be held at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, 300 Hammond Pond Parkway, Chestnut Hill, at 1 PM on April 24. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, 34 Concord Avenue, Cambridge.
