Walter James Cahners (90) of Boston, MA and Wellington, FL, formerly of Brookline, MA and Bangor, ME died peacefully on April 11, 2016 after suffering from multiple long illnesses. He was best friend and devoted protector of his wife Sue (Schwartz) for over 64 years, encouraging, supportive and loving father of Amy Cahners and Catherine Cahners and her husband Dr. Andrew Gillies, proud “Pop” to Nicole and Rachel Hunter and Samantha and Kimberly Gillies, and inseparable from his dog Charlie. Walter was the youngest son of Katherine “Kitty” (Epstein) and James Cahners and beloved youngest brother of the late Charlotte Cahners Harpel Glass, Norman Cahners and Fulton Cahners. Walter will be missed by his family and many friends who will remember him as both a fierce competitor and a consummate gentleman. Services at Temple Israel, 477 Longwood Avenue, Boston (parking on the Riverway), on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Following interment at Newton Cemetery, memorial observance will be at the home of Catherine Cahners and Dr. Andrew Gillies until 8:00 pm and will continue Wednesday, April 20, from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at the home of Amy Cahners. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Solomon Scholars, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Development Office, 116 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02116, www.giving.brighamandwomens.org, or to a charity of your choice.
