Alberta Cohen Endlar died peacefully on February 25, 2025.
Alberta was born on May 28, 1935. She and her sister Sandra were brought up by their Aunt Harriet in Brookline, Massachusetts. She graduated Brookline High School in 1952 and went on to Wheaton College in Norton, MA, graduating in 1956. She met her late husband, Stephen, at piano lessons when they were growing up in Brookline. They married in 1957 and stayed in Brookline where they raised their two daughters, Leslie and Laurie.
Alberta was a member of Belmont Country Club where she learned to play golf just after she got married. She loved the game and became the face of women’s golf for many decades at the club. She won the Women’s Club Championship 7 times in 4 different decades as well as the President’s Cup. She won the Women’s Club Championship at the Sugarbush Golf Club 10 years in a row in the mid 1980s to mid 1990s. She was a fierce competitor who everyone admired. She was always kind to young golfers who were learning the game and enjoyed taking them under her wing.
In her spare time, she started a company with a close friend called Hang-Ups Unlimited. She designed and created golf accessories which were sold in pro-shops and boutiques around the country.
Alberta was also an avid skier. In the winter, she spent many years hosting the whole family at her home in Sugarbush, VT, where all four grandchildren learned to ski – a gift they will have forever. Alberta cooked and orchestrated meals for the entire family every weekend and vacation during the winter. She made it look so easy. Everything she put her mind to was done with perfection. Alberta and Stephen also enjoyed traveling the world skiing and playing championship golf courses here and in Europe.
Alberta adored her grandchildren- Derek, Samantha, Jessica and Jeffrey. They all excelled in sports and Alberta never missed a soccer, lacrosse, squash, baseball or hockey game – rain or shine. Both she and Stephen always attended academic and theater productions at school. They took every opportunity to be involved in each of their lives. In her later years, she took great joy in spending time with her 3 great-grandchildren, Palmer, Sloane, and Zachary.
Alberta is survived by her daughters, Leslie (Richard) Zetlin and Laurie (Michael) Lee; four grandchildren, Derek (Renee) Zetlin, Samantha (Joe) Fruci, Jessica Lee, and Jeffrey Lee; and 3 great grandchildren, Palmer & Sloane Zetlin and Zachary Fruci; and her sister Sandra Bakalar.
Funeral services will be private. Shiva will be observed at Belmont Country Club on Sunday, March 2 from 12:30-3:30.
