Sybil (Seltzer) Sherman

Sherman Sybil

Sybil (Seltzer) Sherman of Newton, MA passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on October 21st at the age of 90. Sybil was the beloved wife of 56 years to the late Saul A. Sherman. She was the cherished mother of Jane Sherman, Suzanne Sherman-Finnerty and her husband Paul Finnerty, Judy Oriel and her husband Robert; she was the adored Grandmother of Brad Oriel and Amanda Oriel. Sybil was the devoted daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie (Koplovitz) Seltzer. She was pre-deceased by her loving brothers Robert, Albert (his surviving wife Lillian) and Martin (Kip) Seltzer. She was the sister-in-law to the late Libby Seltzer, Dorothy (Sherman) and Edward Shuster, and Charlotte (Sherman) and Kenneth Brenner. . She remained close to her nephews, nieces and special family friends up until the time of her death. , Sybil was a life member of Hadassah and past member of Temple Mishkan Tefila. She was a caring woman who supported many causes over her lifetime. Born in Belmont on June 26, 1923, Sybil was raised in Roxbury. She loved playing baseball with her brothers and even up to the time of death enjoyed watching the Red Sox. She would be elated to know that they won the World Series!!! It was evident from an early age that she would be successful in life. She was the President of her class at Roxbury Memorial High School and later on she achieved the ultimate goal of being one of Newton’s top Real Estate Brokers with a career which spanned over 35 years being known in the day as a ‘kitchen broker’. Being the compassionate, charismatic person that she was, her keen sense of business was ahead of her time. It definitely ran in the family with the success that her brothers had with the florist shop Seltzer’s Garden City that had been located in Newton. It is here that she met many of her clients. No matter where we went, Sybil would be engaged in conversation due to her amicable personality. We always said that she could have been the ‘Mayor of Newton’. Everybody loved Sybil as she was truly a remarkable woman. Her high school yearbook quote of “To know her is to love her” has certainly followed her throughout her lifetime. Many have described our mother as beautiful and elegant, a steadfast friend, kind, sensitive, affectionate, strong leader, role model, a winner, “Sybil was an intelligent force of nature”, “always devoted and proud of her family”, “she always made me smile”, a word, expression, a picture, a song, will always be a oonstant reminder of Sybil that shall not be forgotten. Even after being afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, which she lived with for over thirty years, Sybil never complained and she remained upbeat, humorous and optimistic. She enjoyed each day and lived life to its fullest. She was simply the best. She has our deepest love, respect and admiration. Our mother and best friend has been taken from us but we will treasure all of our memories and she will live in our hearts forever and ever. Services have been held. Remembrances may be made to: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Raymond D. Adams Master Clinician Fund, c/o Allen H. Ropper, M.D., Dept. of Neurology, 75 Francis Street, BB204, Boston, MA 02215.
