Jerome Gershin Matz, age 84, a ten year resident of Henderson, Nevada , passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2012. Jerry was born August 29, 1927 in Cleveland, OH to the late Louis and the late Ida (Cohen) Matz. He married Phyllis Frankel who predeceased him on March 18, 2002. Jerry managed Herman’s Furniture Store in Sandusky OH. He was very active in the Sandusky community, serving as President of Oheb Shalom Synagogue and as a member of the Board of Directors of Fireland’s Hospital. After moving to Las Vegas, Jerry became active in the Jewish community. He was a member of Congregation Ner Tamid as well as a number of other organizations and chavurot. Jerry is survived by his children, Leonard (Carol) Matz of New Castle PA, Marilyn (Bob Berwick) Matz of Weston MA, Sheila (Bob Hall) Matz of Brookfield CT, Howard Matz of New York City, and Ellen Matz of Chicago IL; grandchildren Emily (John) Miller of New Wilmington PA, Michael (Emma) Matz of Honolulu HI, Kevin Matz of Pittsburgh PA, Sarah (Steve) Tumasz of Madison WI, Elissa Berwick and Lexie Berwick of Weston MA and great-grandchildren Caitlyn, Kylee, and Aaron Miller, and Abigail Matz. He is predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Phyllis Frankel Matz and his siblings Norman Matz and Dorothy Matz. A graveside service will take place at 2:00 pm on Monday January 16, 2012 at the Beit Olam Cemetery in Wayland MA.
