Barry H. Friedman

October 27, 2019

Barry H. Friedman (82) – Peabody, MA; formerly Westwood, MA

Everyone loved Barry.  Friends of over 70 years or a sausage vendor at Fenway he just met.  Across the globe: colleagues in Japan and Korea and Holland, Rotarians in the UK, hotel managers in Bali, a tailor in Hong Kong – each shared stories, jokes and the best local restaurants.  He was an entrepreneur, an engineer, a salesman – a founder of Copley Controls. Decades of service with Rotary International and, more recently, Founder and President of Gift of Life New England – which saved dozens of children with life-saving heart surgery.

Barry was born and grew up in Brookline, MA.  He attended Brookline High, UMass Amherst, and received two Masters degrees from Northeastern.  He lived most of his life (over 50 years) in Westwood, MA. Winning town tennis tournaments and the head of the committee building the town’s new cemetery.  He was an active member of Temple Beth David and enjoyed regular Sunday breakfasts at Ann’s Diner. Barry traveled the world (all 7 continents and over 50 countries), but always found a way to enjoy the Patriots and Red Sox games in real-time – regardless of the time-zone.

By far his greatest love and pride was his family.  Loving and devoted husband of 54 years to Barbara (of Peabody, MA, formerly Westwood, MA and Montgomery, AL)  Father to Paul (Hillsborough, CA) and Jeffrey (North Reading, MA.) Adoring grandfather to Jonathan, Ben and Eliza.  Brother to Linda and Rachel.

Services in the chapel at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St., Sharon, MA on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at 2:00 pm. Following interment shiva will be at the home of Jeffrey Friedman until 7 pm, and Wednesday 2-7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barry’s memory may be made to Dana Farber, P.O. Box 829168, Boston, MA 02284.

Ivan Donald Berman

October 23, 2019

Ivan Donald Berman, 80, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2019, at Cornerstone Hospice in the Villages, Florida. Ivan was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on November 30, 1938, to Ephie and Minnie (Klotz) Berman. Above all, Ivan will be remembered for his famously dry sense of humor, decency, and devotion to family. He was a good man. Ivan graduated from Grady High School in Atlanta and served for several years in the US Army. He married Kathy Serbin on May 19, 1968, and soon thereafter, the couple moved to Miami, Florida. For many years, he worked at Serbin Fashions, a women’s sportswear business owned by his father-in-law, Lewis Serbin. In semi-retirement, he worked at Walmart, where he was a beloved (and very funny) greeter to customers. In 2014, Ivan and Kathy moved to The Villages, Florida. These were the golden years, when the beloved couple enjoyed time with many friends, new and old; eating out, again and again; traveling; and, especially, their dogs Sampson and Daisy. And while Kathy was out playing bridge, Ivan enjoyed reading history, biographies and the Sunday New York Times; Facetime-ing with his grandchildren; and watching Red Sox and Patriots games (he had given up on the Miami Dolphins years ago).

In addition to Kathy, Ivan is survived by his three children, Todd, Amy (Robert) and Lauren (Paul); three grandchildren, Kelly, Jake and Emma; his late sister Sara Bloom; his late mother-in-law Janeth and late father-in-law, Lewis; his sister-in-law Marianne: nephews Andrew, Douglas, Barry, David; and his beloved pooch, Sampson.  Service on Friday, October 25, 2019 at Beit Olam East Cemetery at 11:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Cornerstone Hospice, cornerstonehospice.com
