Howard Freedman

Howard H. Freedman, 90, of Waban, MA, passed away peacefully February 13, 2016. Beloved husband for 59 years of Louise Allen Freedman and devoted father of Ellen Freedman of Holliston, MA, and Jane Freedman Hadley of Barrington, RI. He was a good friend of sons-in-law Bruce Rayner and Christopher Hadley; and loving Papa of Benjamin, Ethan, and Mae Rayner, and Adam and Charlotte Hadley. He leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, their children and special old friends.

Born in Brookline, MA, on November 25, 1925, Howard was the doting son of the late Edith Kohn Levine and brother of the late Zelda Ryter. In his freshman year at Colby College he was drafted into the US Navy and served his country from 1943-46 in Hawthorne, NV. Upon discharge, he graduated from Colby in 1949 and received an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business. Howard worked in the Boston area as a CPA for private and public accounting firms and retired from Raytheon Corporation in 1994 after 33 years in management accounting positions. For 25 years, he was a Senior Lecturer in Accounting, Northeastern University. Howard volunteered as a tax advisor at the Newton Senior Center, served as the treasurer of Devington Investment Club and maintained a private home practice.

Among his passions were spending time in Sanibel Island, FL, visiting all but a few National Parks in the US and Canada, exploring cities of the world, the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, every bite of a lobster (or two), opera, big bands and the Boston Symphony, duplicate bridge, his investment club, working out with his trainer, trying new restaurants and sushi every Sunday night.

First and foremost was his love of family and vacations that were always spent with “his girls.” He was always available to listen and gave advice only when asked. He was dependable, supportive and non- judgmental. Howard was a detail person with a strong work ethic and a remarkable memory about his teachers and whatever he learned or pursued.

Services will be held at Temple Israel, Boston, on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon MA. Following the service, memorial observance will be held at his home and continue until 4:00 pm and from 6:00 to 9:00 pm; and Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Carl Arthur Gordon

of Needham, February 26, 1934 – February 13, 2016. Son of the late Meyer J. and Edith F. (Nesselroth) Gordon. Carl spent his life in Needham, MA; he was a graduate of Hiram College in Ohio. Carl was a dear friend of Bill and Amy Holland, and their children, Mary, Catie and Andrew.  He was a loving cousin to Arthur, Andre, Claudia, Margaret, Eliot and James Gordon.  Carl will be missed by his good friend and caregiver, Richard Dunphy. Carl was an active member of Massachusetts Masonry; Past Master of Norfolk Lodge A.F. & A.M. ; Past Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Masons of Massachusetts; and Past Commander in Chief of Massachusetts Consistory. The Gordon family was among the earliest members of Temple Beth Shalom, Needham and Carl received much love and assistance from the congregation during his long illness. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Sharon Memorial Park, 43 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA. Memorial observance will be held at his residence on Monday until 8:00 pm and Tuesday 4:00-8:00 pm. Reservitz-Heidi (Patenaude), age 45, of Needham, MA on February 13, 2016, surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Lowell, MA, she graduated from Chelmsford High School, Class of 1988 and Northeastern University, Class of 1993. Following college, Heidi worked at the family business, Video Consultant Service until 2003. She enjoyed skiing, hiking, cooking, traveling, the outdoors and above all, spending time with her family. She is the beloved wife of David Reservitz. Dear daughter of Theresa (Gosselin) and the late Leo Patenaude of Chelmsford, MA. Dear daughter-in-law of Edward and Rochelle (Warren) Reservitz of Easton, MA. Devoted mother of Abigail, Hannah, and William. Loving sister of Linda (Tim) Corkery of Hollis, NH, Kevin (Pam) Patenaude of Lowell, MA, Kimberly (Marc) Normandin of St. Paul, MN, Kenneth Patenaude of Lowell, MA and the late Eric Patenaude. Sister-in-law of Andrew Reservitz of Easton. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will also be missed greatly by countless loving friends. Services at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, 300 Hammond Pond Parkway, Chestnut Hill, on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 11:00 am followed by interment at Needham Cemetery. Shiva will follow interment at her residence Tuesday through Thursday 2-4pm and 6-8 pm. Maurice “Mo” Freedman

Mo Freedman

Maurice “Mo” Freedman 84, of West Newton passed away February 9 with his family at his side. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Hedda Jurgenson, his daughter, Melina Vanderpile, her husband, Kurt Vanderpile, of Arlington, MA, his cherished granddaughters, Delia 13and Luci 10, his brother-in-law, Sven Jurgenson and his companion, Mary Lothenbach.

Mo was born and grew up in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY. After graduating from Brooklyn Tech, Mo received a full scholarship to MIT.Soon the lure of civil engineering jobs in faraway places landed him in Greenland, Newfoundland, Bangladesh, Bermuda and Alaska. Living in Greenwich Village in the mid to late 1950’s, Mo enjoyed the vibrant artistic scene there while completing his civil engineering degree at NYU.

Spanning almost 60 years, Mo had a diverse career, ranging from surveying, heavy construction, planning & engineering design to development and development management. He worked at Metcalf & Eddy, then was Senior Principal and Chief Engineer at Sasaki Associates, Watertown, then Pressley Associates, and finally founder and president of The Freedman Group, Inc.

Mo’s great passion was captaining his sailboat, the Starquest with his family in the waters of Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound. He loved swimming at Crystal Lake and Walden Pond, spending time at the beach in Wellfleet, and walking or biking around Castle Island and Harbor Walk. He loved lecturing at MIT and the Harvard GSD and at local libraries and senior centers in his retirement about land development, current political events, and waterfront planning – product of his love of life long learning. Traveling the world with Hedda became his favorite activity in the last years of his life.

He will be buried on Friday, February 12 in a private graveside service.  A celebration in Mo’s memory will be announced at a later date by his family.
