Lenore Helen Gessner Travis, on April 26, 2015. Lenore was born in Escanaba, Michigan on February 3, 1948. Her mother’s family fled Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Her father’s family emigrated from Germany in the 1870s and founded The Fair Store in Escanaba. In 1953, the family moved to Cambridge where they started a successful shoe company.
Lenore was a life-long learner. She attended Shady Hill School, Buckingham School, and Hiram College. In the summers, the self-described ‘city girl’ attended Arnold Western Ranch in Colorado, where she developed a love for horses and the outdoors.
After graduating from college in 1969, she taught at Shady Hill School, worked at the Ha’Penny Pub, volunteered at Revels, and shortly after began her career at Tom Fields Associates producing rock and roll shows nationally where she met her future husband, George. They reconnected when she was with Mike Brown Grandstands in California. They were married for 35 years.
The Travises then moved to Lincoln, Massachusetts where they raised three children, numerous cows, chickens, and giant Flemish rabbits. Lenore continued her spirit of volunteering on many diverse fronts. Some of these include Revels, The Shady Hill School, The Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence, Planned Parenthood, The Farm School, the Food Project, Save a Dog, and Codman Farm.
Lenore embraced all faiths and never missed an opportunity to arrange a gathering with her large group of family and friends who were collected from diverse places and backgrounds.
Lenore leaves her husband George, her children Ben of New York City, Mat and his wife Amy of Washington DC, and Kyra of Chatham; brothers Charles Gessner and his wife Susan of Marblehead and David Gessner of Somerville, and relatives in Israel and Brazil. Services will be held in the Story Chapel, Mount Auburn Cemetery, 580 Mount Auburn St., Cambridge, on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 2:30 pm. Following interment at Mount Auburn Cemetery, memorial observance will be at the Travis residence from 6-8 pm Thursday, and 5-7 pm on Friday. Died April 26, 2015 at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Hospice in Wayland, MA of complications from dementia and diabetes. Bud grew up in Haverhill, MA and met his wife Joan (Ostrows) in Boston. Bud and Joan raised their children, Mark and David, in Holliston, MA and later moved to Brookline. They were married for 53 years until her death in 2005. Bud’s son Mark and granddaughter Lily live in Irving , TX, and his son David, daughter-in-law Nicole and granddaughter Rachel live in Weston, MA. Bud is also survived by his sister Helene Mershon from Boynton Beach, FL. Services will take place at the Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick St Newton Centre, MA on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at 12 noon. Following interment at the Hebrew Progressive Cemetery, 350 Grove St., West Roxbury, MA, memorial observance will be at the home of David and Nicole Mordecai in Weston, MA on Thursday and Friday 5-8 pm. Albert J. Kazis DMD- Of Brookline, formerly of Newton, on April 23 at his home surrounded by his family, one month short of his 90th birthday. Dr. Kazis was a noted prosthodontist and professor of dental medicine, and the author of a seminal book on prosthodontics. Born in Cambridge, he received his undergraduate education from Boston University, his D.M.D. degree from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and his masters degree in public health at the Harvard School of Public Health. He taught Prosthodontics at Tufts, then entered into private practice in Boston with his father, Harry Kazis, in 1952. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics in 1967. He continued to teach in the dental schools at Tufts and Harvard, and was assistant dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine from 1968 to 1971, and chair of the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry at Harvard from 1988 to 1994. Dr. Kazis lectured widely on mouth rehabilitation in the U.S. and Latin America, was a leader in a number of dental organizations, and wrote two books on prosthetic dentistry, the first with his father. He retired from private practice in 1998. From 1995 until 2000 he served as an appointee of Governor William Weld to the Board of Registration in Dentistry from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dr. Kazis was a trustee of Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Newton. He was the beloved husband for 65 years of Rose Leah (Etscovitz) Kazis. He was devoted father of Lewis Kazis and his wife Beatrix Thomas, Joel D. Kazis and his wife Sara E. Nathan, and Ellen Kazis-Walker and Don Walker. He was the loving grandfather of David Kazis, Josh Nathan-Kazis and his wife Emily Seife, Saul Nathan-Kazis, Rebecca Walker, and Ben Walker. He was the cherished brother of Agnes Young, Earle W. Kazis, and the late Shirlee Shrago. Funeral will be held at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, 300 Hammond Pond Parkway, Chestnut Hill, at 1 PM on April 24. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harvard Institute for Learning in Retirement, 34 Concord Avenue, Cambridge.
