Alvan H. Tucker

Tucker-Alvan Howard of Chestnut Hill and Brewster, on November 3, 2011, at the age of 84. Al was born in Boston, the second son of Joseph and Minnie Tucker. He was a 1944 graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover. He was a corporal in the US Army from 1946 to 1947 and returned to graduate from Yale University in 1948 and Columbia Business School in 1951. Al and his older brother, the late Leonard Tucker, took over running their father’s company, Tucker Concrete Form, Co. in 1965. Together they were responsible for a variety of structures across the greater Boston area, from Harvard University to the Longwood Medical Area. They contributed to some of Boston’s landmark buildings, such as Boston City Hall and structures around Faneuil Hall and Logan airport. Al was president of the Building Trade Employers’ Association of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, president of the Recuperative Center, and a long-serving member of the Building Committee at Beth Israel Hospital. He was known for his warmth, gentleness, and generosity.  Al was an avid squash player and a champion tournament backgammon player. He enjoyed sailing, traveling, and the beach and took great pleasure in entertaining, classical music, and collecting contemporary art. Of all his loves, the greatest were his wife, Judith (Rubin) and children, Lindsey, Andrew and Colby Tucker. Services at Temple Israel, 477 Longwood Ave, Boston (parking attendants on the Riverway) on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 10:30 AM. Following interment at Walnut Hills Cemetery, Brookline, memorial observance will be at his residence until 4 PM Monday, Tuesday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM, and Wednesday from 4-6 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Arnold Arboretum, 125 Arborway, Boston, MA 02130, and the Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02115.
