Dorothy Slotnick Green, of Middleton, MA, surrounded by her friends and family, died after a brief illness, Tuesday September 22, 2015.
Cherished wife of Eugene C. Green, loving sister of Selma Slotnick Lait, and daughter of the late Isadore and Celena (Cooper) Slotnick.
Dotti, as so many called her, was an amazing women. Born in Brookline, a 1958 graduate of Brookline High, she graduated with a degree in education from Boston University and became an elementary school teacher, eventually spending 20 years at the Kiley School in Peabody teaching the 5th grade. As an active member of the North Shore community, Dotti often would bump into her many students, who remembered her fondly. While teaching, Dotti also co-owned and operated the Gordon Green Jewelers in Peabody.
After leaving the teaching field, Dotti joined her husband in the family business, Slotnick Monuments in Everett, which was started by her grandfather. There she and her husband operated the business until they sold to the next generation in 2003. Dotti continued to work full time until her most recent illness this year. A valuable and special member of the daily operations, she was loved by not only the staff but by all of the families she worked with over the thirty plus years. She spent countless hours continuing the family tradition of the monument business but also the cemeteries where she spent time throughout her entire life. A proud member of the Slotnick family, she believed that not only did each stone represent her family but the family cemetery, Beth Israel Cemetery of Everett, and put exhausting effort into establishing a self-sufficient and modern cemetery. A brilliant business woman, she recognized the needs of the community, and with Gene, encouraged the family to open and developed the interfaith section of the cemetery in 1997.
No challenge was too great for Dotti. She overcame many different types of cancer over the years, educated herself to learn what the best treatment would be and was never shy when speaking to a doctor about her health. She was always willing to learn something new, and enjoyed new challenges whether it be at work, traveling all over the world, or spending time with her family and friends. Always willing to not only stand up for what she believed in, she was always warm and caring to anyone she came into contact with, greeting each person and making them feel as if they were the only one that mattered.
Besides her beloved husband of 47 years and dear sister, she leaves over 100 nieces and nephews, and countless friends, all of whom will miss her in their own way.
