Harry Reiss

Dr. Harry Reiss of Concord, MA, formerly of Manhattan and New Rochelle, New York, passed away at the age of 94 on Monday, June 24, 2019.

The youngest of twelve children, Harry was born in Toronto to Rose (Roth) and Avigdor Reiss. He attended medical school at the University of Toronto where he met his wife, Ruthetta Kaplan. The couple were married in 1949. After completing residencies in general medicine and psychiatry, Harry trained in psychoanalysis at Columbia Psychoanalytic.  He served as Captain in the U.S. Air Force in St. John’s, Newfoundland where the couple’s two children were born. He worked as a psychiatrist with extraordinary care and empathy in New York for almost 60 years.  His office was a few blocks from the Metropolitan Museum; he loved to spend time there, instilling a love for art and and appreciation of world civilizations in his family. Harry was also an avid tennis player, and a gardener who prided himself on his tomatoes. He loved to give tours of his garden, teach visitors botanical names, and recruit their help in weeding, mulching and harvesting.

Harry is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ruthetta (Kaplan) Reiss. He leaves his children Rosemary (Avner Ash) and Jonathan (Micki) and his grandchildren Alexandra Ash (Michael Pearlstein-Gluck), Ellie Ash, Teddy Reiss and Sophia Reiss. He is survived by one brother, Irving Reiss of Toronto.   He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
