Howard H. Freedman

Howard Freedman

Howard H. Freedman, 90, of Waban, MA, passed away peacefully February 13, 2016. Beloved husband for 59 years of Louise Allen Freedman and devoted father of Ellen Freedman of Holliston, MA, and Jane Freedman Hadley of Barrington, RI. He was a good friend of sons-in-law Bruce Rayner and Christopher Hadley; and loving Papa of Benjamin, Ethan, and Mae Rayner, and Adam and Charlotte Hadley. He leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, their children and special old friends.

Born in Brookline, MA, on November 25, 1925, Howard was the doting son of the late Edith Kohn Levine and brother of the late Zelda Ryter. In his freshman year at Colby College he was drafted into the US Navy and served his country from 1943-46 in Hawthorne, NV. Upon discharge, he graduated from Colby in 1949 and received an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business. Howard worked in the Boston area as a CPA for private and public accounting firms and retired from Raytheon Corporation in 1994 after 33 years in management accounting positions. For 25 years, he was a Senior Lecturer in Accounting, Northeastern University. Howard volunteered as a tax advisor at the Newton Senior Center, served as the treasurer of Devington Investment Club and maintained a private home practice.

Among his passions were spending time in Sanibel Island, FL, visiting all but a few National Parks in the US and Canada, exploring cities of the world, the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, every bite of a lobster (or two), opera, big bands and the Boston Symphony, duplicate bridge, his investment club, working out with his trainer, trying new restaurants and sushi every Sunday night.

First and foremost was his love of family and vacations that were always spent with “his girls.” He was always available to listen and gave advice only when asked. He was dependable, supportive and non- judgmental. Howard was a detail person with a strong work ethic and a remarkable memory about his teachers and whatever he learned or pursued.

Services will be held at Temple Israel, Boston, on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 10:00 am. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon MA. Following the service, memorial observance will be held at his home and continue until 4:00 pm and from 6:00 to 9:00 pm; and Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his name can be made to Friends of Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Avenue, Boston MA 02215, or Colby College, 5100 Mayflower Hill Drive, Waterville ME 04901.
