Morris Snieder.jpg

Born on New Year’s Day in 1925 in Boston, he was the son of the late Israel and Polly (Levine) Sneider, both originally from Russia. Mr. Snieder joined the U.S. Marines on February 23, 1942 when he was barely 17 years old.  He qualified in bayonet two months later. His service during WWII included combat at Guadalcanal and the Battle of Bougainville in the British Solomon Islands. Private First Class Snieder was honorably discharged from the Marine Corp on November 17, 1944 at the Naval Air Station, Moffet Field, California. Mr. Snieder returned to private life and worked for the city of Boston and other jobs with the state and Federal government.  In 1969 he married the former Frances Ireland, adopted her son Blaine and the family settled in Newton the following year.  Morris and Frances’ son Wayne Snieder was born on January 2, 1979. He was a devoted father to Wayne and they loved walking their dogs near their Newton home. Wayne predeceased his father on September 16, 2011. Mr. Snieder passed away on May 27, 2016 at the Edith Norse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford, surrounded by his friends and caretakers there.

Those wishing to honor Mr. Snieder’s service to our country are welcome to attend his services at the Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut St, Newton Centre on Thursday, June 9, 2016 at 2 pm. Remembrances may be made in the form of donations to the Bedford VAMC Patient Programs, Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, 200 Springs Rd., Bedford, MA 01730.
