Norton Lloyd Sherman

Age 83, of Newton, MA, on November 4, 2015. Beloved husband of Claire Bernstein Sherman. Devoted father of Amy, Steven and his wife Alison, Brian and his wife Dawn. Loving grandfather to Brendon, Alex, Michael, Zachary, Annie, Bradford & Samantha. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Beatrice Sherman. Embraced by both the Jewish and secular communities, he was instrumental in supporting many organizations in both the Jewish and secular communities in Greater Boston and beyond. Mr. Sherman was a Fellow of Brandeis University and supported the Hornstein Program and related symposia there. He was a Trustee of the Beth Israel Hospital, where the Sherman Auditorium was rededicated to him last year. At Boston University, as a Trustee of Both BU and Hillel, he established the Boston University Jewish Cultural Endowment Fund. Through the JCC of Greater Boston, the Sherman Recreation Building at Camp Kingswood was established. A longtime supporter of the JF&CS, programs for seniors are ongoing for holiday celebrations. In Israel, he helped create a building in support of teacher education at Technion University. He was a founding board member and supporter of the Boston Jewish Film Festival.  Services will be held Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 12:00 Noon at Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Road Newton, followed by interment at Temple Israel Cemetery, Wakefield. The family will  receive friends at his residence following burial through 7:00 pm and on Monday 2-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in Norton’s memory may be made to the Jewish Family & Children Services, 1430 Main Street Waltham, MA 02451 for the Passover & Hanukah programs for Seniors,  or to a charity of your choice
