William Zucker, the former co-owner of Wilmack Photography Studio and M & W Camera Shop in Buffalo, NY died Sunday, October 15, 2017 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham, MA after a brief illness. He was 90.
Mr. Zucker was born in Elbing, East Prussia on August 22, 1927. He was raised in Vladimir Volynsk (Ludmir) Poland near what is now Lvov, Ukraine, an area that frequently changed hands.
Nazis invaded the town in 1941 when William was 14 years old and he was forced into a ghetto with his family. In September 1942, Einsatzgruppen, or paramilitary Nazi death squads, liquidated the ghetto and town by massacring 18,000 Jewish people in two weeks.
This included William’s beloved mother Rachel (nee Katz) and his two sisters Sarah and Gittel, who were buried in mass graves in nearby Piyatidne Forest. Another brother, Yechiel, was presumed killed in Sokol. His father Itzhak had died of natural causes in 1941.
William escaped with his brother Chaim (“Fimka”) and eventually joined the Russian partisans to fight against the Germans.
He came to the US in 1949, after being sponsored by a friend in New Jersey and was drafted by the Army during the Korean War. After his service, he moved to Buffalo in 1957 and created a photography studio along with partner Michael Zelcer. It still exists today.
He introduced innovative dimensional flash techniques to the Buffalo market. The partners later opened up two camera shops and ran the business for 40 years.
Mr. Zucker was an avid traveler, and went to Europe, Hawaii and Alaska. He frequently visited his only remaining brother Chaim in Ramat Gan, Israel, who was a dentist there.
He also enjoyed hockey, the opera and playing the stock market as well as spending time at his properties in New York, Florida and Needham, Massachusetts. In recent years, he was a much-loved resident of Needham and member of Temple Reyim in Newton. He spoke five languages.
Mr. Zucker was married for 50 years to the former Judith Clara Balassa, who died in 2007.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry and Orrin Zucker, and four grandchildren, Benjamin, Joshua, Noah and Nate. There is also a nephew, Itzhak Zucker, of Ramat Gan Israel.
Burial was Tuesday, October 17, 2016 at 2 pm at Lindwood Cemetery in Randolph, MA.

Grossack, David Charles, Esq., of Hull, Massachusetts, on September 20, 2017, erev Rosh Hashanah.
David is survived by his mother, Judith (Trachtenberg) Grossack, brother and sister-in-law, Richard (Rocky) Grossack and Jori Ceder Grossack, nephews, Samuel, Adam, and Zachary Grossack, and long-time partner, Joan Shuman.
David succumbed to a hard fought battle with heart and kidney failure despite the superhuman efforts of the amazingly compassionate and dedicated staff of the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA.
David was, first and foremost, a passionate man. Several locales held special significance to him: He loved walking the beach in his hometown of Hull; he loved visiting his birthplace of Hawaii, returning there frequently to vacation; He was especially passionate about Israel, its people, history, customs, and even geography (David loved spending as much time as possible floating in the Dead Sea).
Career-wise, David was passionate about the law and serving his clients. There was no topic or client too controversial for David to vigorously defend. One notable legal issue for which he passionately worked were fathers in marital disputes who were summarily denied child custody and visitation rights in ex parte proceedings (without the right to present their sides of the issue). David represented this group despite public biases against them.
David’s hobbies included creating artwork and researching (and discussing) history, current events, and geopolitical issues.
Lastly, David was most passionate about his family, doting on his three nephews and their accomplishments. He was lovingly connected to his significant other, Joan, and her brothers, Charlie, David, and Steven. David called his sister-in-law, “Sis” and enjoyed wonderfully close relationships with both his mother and brother.
David made a positive impact on many lives and will be dearly missed.
Funeral services for David Grossack will be held on Sunday, September 24th at 11:45 am at Temple Reyim, 1860 Washington St., Newton, MA. Shiva will be held immediately thereafter at the temple and continue until 8:30 pm.
If you choose to make a contribution in memory of David, his family suggest a donation to his alma mater – New England Law / Boston, 154 Stuart St., Boston, MA 02116 – alumni.nesl.edu/makeagift

Dr. Robert S. Schwartz, a renowned hematologist who pioneered in the development of organ transplantation and the treatment of autoimmune diseases by suppressing the immune system, died on August 23, 2017, after a wonderful, long and fulfilling life.
A little more than a half-century ago, attempts to transplant organs from one body to another almost always failed and were usually fatal due to rejection. Schwartz, a young hematologist, working beside William Dameshek at Tufts School of Medicine, found a way around this impasse. In a series of tightly argued papers they showed that the problem of organ rejection could be solved through chemical damping down of the immune system at the time of transplantation. Schwartz identified the best drug for surgeons to use—a substance called 6 Mercaptopurine. Moreover, he showed that this same drug 6-mercaptopurine and its analogue azathioprine was also effective in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. This discovery of chemical immunosuppression, opened the field of organ and bone marrow transplantation—which has been called one of the miracles of modern medicine. Dr. Gertrude Elion and a Nobel Prize co-winner with Dr. George Hitchings in the Nobel lecture noted that a “new horizon appeared” with the first findings from Tufts. In 1990 Nobel laureate Dr. Joseph Murray, a surgeon internationally known for having performed the first successful human organ transplant at the Peter Bent Hospital in Boston, remarked that the “real breakthrough came with the introduction of immunosupression drugs by Schwartz and Dameshek in 1959.
Schwartz, longtime professor of medicine at Tufts was born in East Orange New Jersey in 1928. He was a graduate of Seton Hall College in New Jersey. He received his MD degree from New York University in 1954, and was a medical resident in New York and New Haven. Schwartz came to Boston to work at Tufts in 1957. In addition to publishing more than 350 scientific papers, Schwartz has distinguished himself as both teacher and mentor. He had been a professor at Tufts Medical School since 1961, repeatedly earning recognition from medical students for the excellence of his teaching, winning 13 annual outstanding teach awards. Schwartz was chief of the Division of Hematology at Tufts Medical Center for nearly three decades.
In 1994, Dr. Schwartz left Tufts to take a position as Deputy Editor of the New England Journal of Medicine. He was responsible for papers dealing with hematology and oncology, a series on the mechanisms of disease, and the book review section. Dr. Schwartz retired from the Journal at the end of 2009.
Dr. Schwartz received four Honorary Doctor of Science degrees, gave numerous honorary lectures and received many prizes for his work, including the Stratton Prize from the American Society of Hematology, the Medawar Prize from the Transplantation Society and the Thomas Starzl Prize from the University of Pittsburgh.
Since retiring, Dr. Schwartz devoted much of his time to photography, his lifetime passion and considered himself a fulltime amateur photographer. As a Hematologist, a field in which images have considerable importance, he once wrote, “seen through a microscope bloods cells display unusually stricking forms, colors, and ways of clustering.” For him, the two have a natural connection.
Dr. Schwartz leaves his loving and devoted wife Ruth Mann Horowitz, and a large loving family including Gail Mann and Harvey Hurvitz, Susan and Jeff Davidson, Alan and Jill Mann, Louis Schwartz, Adam Schwartz, Esta Kilstein, Liam Schwartz, and grandchildren- Sydney and Michael Siagel, Michael Kirsten, Rachel Davidson, Zachary Davidson, Allison Mann, Lindsay Mann, Sivan Kilstein, Yarden Kilstein, Rotem Kilstein, and Annie Rose Schwartz. Services will be private. Shiva will be Friday 3-6 and 7-9 pm at Ruth Horowitz’s residence, 210 Nahanton St., Newton.
