A. Ronald Chase

WORCESTER – A. Ronald Chase, 81, of 631 Salisbury St., was stricken ill and died at UMASS Memorial Healthcare on Saturday, April 5,2014.

He leaves his wife, Eleanor (Pellegrini) Reidy Chase; two sons, Gary Chase and his wife Cheryl of Holden, Robert Chase of West Palm Beach, FL and a daughter, Debbi Chase and her partner Tammy Mason of Milford; a step-son, Michael Reidy of Worcester; and three grandchildren, Ashley, Daniel and Taylor Chase. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Norman Chase and Leonard Chase.

He was born in Worcester and was a son of Samuel H. Chase and Bessie (Moskowitz) Chase and was a lifelong resident of Worcester.

He was the owner of Chase Real Estate and Associated Credit for many years before his retirement.

In memory of his parents, Mr. Chase donated the two elevators at the Jewish Healthcare Center, classrooms at Clark University and bunks at Kiddie Kamp, an overnight summer camp. He was a longtime member of Temple Emanuel, B’Nai Brith and Yeshiva Achei Timimim. He was instrumental in all phases of the building of Congregation B’Nai Shalom in Westboro. He was an active fundraiser for many charitable organizations in Worcester. For 20 years he was executive director of B’Nai Brith Cemetery.

FUNERAL SERVICES  AT 2:00 PM ON MONDAY, APRIL 7,2014, AT TEMPLE EMANUEL SINAI,  280 MAY ST., WORCESTER, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF BREZNIAK RODMAN CHAPEL OF NEWTON. Burial will be at B’Nai Brith Cemetery.

Memorial Observance will be announced at the funeral.

Etta Christine (Whitaker) Langille

Etta Langille

Etta Christine (Whitaker) Langille passed away on April 2, 2014 at home and surrounded by her family, as she wished. She was 88 years old. Etta was born in Weymouth, raised in Pembroke and a longtime resident of Needham. Her beloved husband Ronald D. Langille passed away just 4 short months before her in November 2013.

Etta survived her two sisters Evelyn Napolaton and Janet Peterson. She was a devoted mother to Ronald W. Langille and his wife Karen of Dedham and Debra Kelly and her late husband Brian of Plymouth. Grandmother to Kelly Langille and her fiancee Charles Collins, Ronald B. Langille, Kevin Langille, Brendan Kelly and his wife Laura, and Shealan Kelly. Great-grandmother to Leah and Charlie Collins.

She met her late husband, Ronald, on a blind date. She thought his accent was “funny”, he thought she was beautiful. They married December 15, 1951. They spent all of their time together, working side by side in the family business, raising their two children, and never tiring of each other. Etta even enjoyed the occassional ride on the back of her husband’s Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Before becoming a mother she was an LPN, caring for blind infants and children at the Convelescent Home for Children in Wellesley and the New England Home for Little Wanderers in Jamaica Plain.

After her children had married and started families of their own, Etta and Ron traveled extensively throughout the United States in their “motor-home”, visiting all the states except Hawaii, They also enjoyed traveling throughout the Canadian provinces, where Ronald was born and raised.

Etta was a strong, kind, gentle, caring, compassionate woman who will be missed daily by her loved ones. Her family and friends could only wish that she is now happy and at peace, once again reunited with her beloved husband.

At Etta’s request funeral services will be private.  Those wishing to remember her may do so through memorial donations to the Joslin Diabetes Center, 1 Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215. Arrangements under the direction of Brezniak-Rodman Funeral Directors of Newton.

Elaine (Abramoff) Palley, 87, a lifelong resident of Worcester, passed away on March 31, 2014, at UMass Memorial Healthcare with her family at her bedside.  A daughter of Harry and Ida (Abramoff) Bloom, Elaine attended Worcester Public Schools and Salter College. She leaves her husband of 67 years, Julius,  her daughter Jane and her husband Bennett Weintraub, and their children, Jesse, Daniel, and Rebecca; her daughter Candace and her husband P. Joseph Casey and their children, Benjamin and Alexander, and her son, Jonathan Palley and his wife Natalie and their children, Sarah, Harry, and Max. Elaine also leaves her sister, Ruth and her husband Lloyd Marks, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sisters, Evelyn Levine and Marcia Zwecher and by her brother Sidney Bloom. Elaine’s early years of marriage were spent raising her three young children at the Newport Naval Base while her husband served our country overseas. Elaine’s primary interest was family and friends. Concerned with the problems of children and adults with social needs, she was a volunteer aid at the Glavin Center, Worcester State Hospital and Westboro State Hospital. She also volunteered as a school librarian for the Worcester Public School System. Throughout her married life Elaine shared in the family business activities. Elaine was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue’s Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women, Hadassah, and the Jewish Healthcare Auxiliary. She was born in Bronx, NY and  lived most of her life in Worcester. Joseph N. Goff, 96, of Worcester died on Saturday, March 22, 2104. He leaves his wife of almost 50 years, Lillian (Gashin) Cohen Goff; a son, Richard Goff; a step-son, Fred Cohen; a son-in-law, Stephen Shulman and his wife, Carol; five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth (Caine) Goff, who died in 1961, his daughter, Karen Shulman, his step-son, Barney Cohen, his two brothers, Harry Goff and Udell Goff and by his sisters, Rose Goff, Eva Goff and Bessie Goff.He was born in Worcester and was a son of Robert and Ida Goff and was a lifelong resident. He was the owner of Caine Paint and Wallpaper in Worcester for many years, retiring in 2005. Joseph graduated from Clark University and received a Masters Degree in History. Cynthia (Ponty) Talbert, 78, of Rutland and formerly of Spencer, died on Friday, March 14th in Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida, after being stricken ill.She leaves two daughters, Julie Jamron, wife of David Cabana of Rutland, and Rise, wife of Michael Kent of Spencer; a son, Bret Talbert and his girlfriend, Dawn Corson of Barre, and eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Colin, Calev, Jacob, Etha, Kayla, Madison and Michaela. She was predeceased by her son, Morse Burack, her two former husbands, Edwin Burack and James Talbert, her fiance, John Poisant, her brother, Howard Ponty and her sister, Louise Koenig. She leaves several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was born in Worcester and was a daughter of Harry S. and Belle (Victor) Ponty and had lived most of her life in Worcester before moving to Spencer and most recently to Rutland. She graduated Classical High School, Worcester State Teachers College and received her Doctorate in Education from University of Connecticut.She was a teacher in grammar schools of the Worcester School System. She was a professor and administrator at Worcester State University and Fitchburg State University for many years, retiring several years ago. She co-authored two books. She was the former owner of The Brunch Box in Worcester. She was a talented pianist. She received Four Keys to the City of Worcester as well as many other awards. She travelled extensively, teaching for the America School. She had been an active member of National Council of Jewish Women, Worcester Chapter of Hadassah and PDK.Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 19th in Beth Israel Synagogue on Jamesbury Drive in Worcester under the direction of Richard Perlman of Brezniak Rodman Chapels of Newton. Burial will be in Sons of Jacob Cemetery in Leicester. Stavros  Socrates  Frantzis, of Jamaica Plain, 72, on March 15, 2014 after a short illness. He was the beloved husband of Doris Charry Frantzis, and was the devoted father of Renzo Miranda of Jamaica Plain, and Sokrates Frantzis of California, his brother Kostas and sister Anthi.  Born and raised in Mytilini, Greece, he was Principal of Frantzis and Associates, a commercial and residential real estate investment, construction and development firm. His company focused on the revitalization of inner-city commercial areas in Boston neighborhoods, taking properties that were in disrepair and turning them into successful projects sensitive to neighborhood concerns regarding design and use. After receiving master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Technical University of Athens and from Northwestern University in Illinois, he earned his doctorate in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences from Northwestern in 1974. He was on the full-time faculties of Loyola University of Chicago (1973-1975) and then Northeastern University in Boston (1975-1982). He taught part-time at Babson College from 1982-1985. Stavros was fluent in Greek, English and Spanish and frequently traveled to Colombia and Greece. He, his wife and son Renzo went around the world in 80 days last summer, circling west to more than 10 countries before arriving back in Boston. He was a philanthropist who donated to many causes and was affiliated with community organizations that dealt with planning and commerce. His hands were said to be both strong and artistic, and he used them to design buildings and gardens. His blue eyes were the color of the Aegean Sea. “Death is the last journey in life,” he said. Beloved brother of the late Irving who was killed serving in the army in France during WWII. He leaves a son, William Katcher of Leominster and four grandchildren, David Katcher and Jonathan Katcher, both of Fitchburg, Reesha Katcher of Pescadero, CA and Adam Katcher of Ann Arbor, Michigan.He was born in Brooklyn, New York,  lived in New Jersey for many years, and retired in Florida In his 25 years of retirement, he worked as a postal worker for the United States Post Office. Nathan Kashuk, 88, of Worcester, son of the late Jacob and Anne (Olsavich) Kashuk, died Wednesday, March 12,2014 at Beaumont Rehabilitation Center after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in the West End of Boston, Nathan graduated from English High in 1943, and at age 17 volunteered and served overseas for 32 months in the Pacific Theatre of operations in World War II. He was a decorated veteran who participated in battles of Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands, Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas Island and Okinawa. He was with the first occupation forces in Nagasaki three weeks after the dropping of the 2nd atomic bomb. He was considered an “atomic veteran.” Nathan graduated Burdett College in 1947, married the love of his life, Dorothy (Potash) in 1947, and lived in Worcester until 1989 when they moved to Hyannis, MA. They returned to Worcester in 2009 to be closer to family. Nathan was a CPA in Worcester, establishing his own accounting firm, and became a senior partner in the Worcester CPA firm Kumin, Kashuk and Stevens, retiring at age 64. He was a member of the American Institute of CPA’s, Massachusetts Society of CPA’s, a life member of the Jewish War Veterans and Disabled American Veterans.He was active his entire career in civic and professional organizations including: the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Society of CPA’s, and auditor of that organization, a member of Level Lodge of Masons in Worcester and the Masonic Fraternal Lodge of Cape Cod, and a member of the Allepo Temple. He was a member of the Scottish Rite Masons, served as Treasurer and as Chairman of the Finance Committee, and Treasurer of Brotherhood of Temple Emanuel in Worcester and Cape Cod Synagogue. He most recently served as a member of the Willows Residents Advisory Committee. Nathan is survived by his devoted and close knit family; his wife Dorothy; children Gerald A. Kashuk and his wife Shelley of Paxton, Jane E. Nahabedian and her husband Arthur of Chelmsford, Garry Kashuk and his wife Marie of Cranston, Rl, and Larry Kashuk and his wife Darlene of Villa Park, CA; grandchildren Jill E. Ricardo and her husband Jason of Framingham, Leslie McKeough and her husband David of Broadlands, VA, Joshua Kashuk of San Francisco, Benjamin Kashuk of Villa Park, CA, Jacob Kashuk of Milwaukee, WI, Samuel Kashuk of Portland, OR, and three great grandchildren. Nathan was predeceased by his sister Sophia.Nathan provided inspiration, motivation and support to all who met him. He was a family man first and foremost, cherishing the time he spent with his ever-expanding family. He was a proud Marine, a world traveler, and lived a joyous and accomplished life.The funeral will be 3:00PM, Sunday, March 16,2014 at Temple Emanuel Sinai, 280 May St, Worcester, under the direction of Richard Perlman of Brezniak Rodman Chapels of Newton. Dr. Irving Wolf

Dr. Irving Wolf, 89, of Wayland, formerly of Newton, passed away on March 8, 2014 at the Metro West Medical Center in Framingham.  He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth P. (Haughey) Wolf with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.

The son of the late Samuel and Anna (Tornansky) Wolf, he was born and raised in New Haven, CT.

Dr. Wolf was inducted into the United States Army in 1943 and served with the I & E Western Base division in Northern France during WWII.  He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal and the American Theater Service Medal prior to being honorably discharged in 1946.  Upon returning from military service, Dr. Wolf attended Boston University earning his doctorate in psychology in 1954.

Following graduation he served in administration and treatment of children and adults for several years before returning to Boston University as Professor of Psychology.  During his 16 years at BU he served as chair of several programs including directorship of the graduate program in clinical psychology.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Wolf is survived by daughter Susan Abrams and husband Jacques, sons Richard Wolf and wife Denise, Robert Wolf, and William Wolf.  In addition he leaves four grandchildren, Michelle Abrams, and Steven, Jessica and Rachel Wolf

Funeral service in the Brezniak-Rodman Chapel, 1251 Washington St. (at Chestnut St.) WEST NEWTON, on March 12, 2014 at 11:00 a.m.  Burial with military honors will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Wayland.  Following interment, guests are invited to gather at the clubhouse at The Hills at Mainstone in Wayland.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Louis Mietla, age 89, died on Tuesday, February 25,2014, at the Jewish Healthcare Center.His wife of 49 years, Shirley (Goldstein) Mietla died in 2010. He leaves a stepdaughter, Amy Yanover ,wife of David L. Matterville, of North Brookfield; a sister-in-law, Miriam Mietla, wife of the late Felix Mietla of Worcester, two grandsons, Aaron and Jacob, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.During the Holocaust, he was interned in Auschwitz Concentration Camp, where his parents, aunts, uncles and cousins were murdered.He owned Roxy Cleaners for many years, retiring many years ago.He was born in Poland and was a son of Pinchos and Sarah Chaya (Levine) Mietla and had lived many years in Worcester, then 28 years in Aventura, FL before returning to Worcester 8 years ago.He was a member of Yeshiva Achei Timimim and Shaarai Torah Synagogue West. Arthur “Archie” Sherman  passed away on  February 26, 2014. Born on December 8, 1928,  to Gertie and Benjamin Sherman,  Arthur attended Boston Latin School, Harvard College and Harvard Law School. He practiced law until 1972 when he was appointed a judge to the Cambridge District Court, where he served until mandatory retirement in 1998. Arthur was a mentor to hundreds of young lawyers and judges in his 26 years on the bench. He was married for 47 years to the beautiful Norma Sherman until her death in 2000. The lights of his life were his children, Jayne and Marc Lampert of Sudbury, Barbara and Lee Levison of New York City, Michael and Jacquie Sherman of Needham and Paul Sherman and David Garten of Boston and Provincetown. He took delight and pride in his eight wonderful grandchildren, Dana, Seth and Joshua Lampert; Ben, Sam and Liza Levison; and Gabrielle and Nathan Sherman.  Arthur also had a close and special relationship with his only brother and sister in law, Albert  and Linda Sherman, and his niece and nephews, Risa, Matthew and Peter Sherman. (Simons) Weinstein.  Loving brother of Lisa Hollis and her husband Jay of Wells, Maine, and adored uncle of Julie and Annie Hollis.  He leaves behind many cherished friends and relatives in Florida and Massachusetts; his childhood buddies who were there for him through thick and thin  – Barry, Craig, Marc, Peter, and Marty and the late David Polivy. His cousins, Penny, Kathy, Nancy-Jo, Amy, Laurie, Tandee, Amy, Andrew, Judy, Johnny, Jaime, Ann, Heidi, and especially Marc, Kerrie, and Jeff.  His beloved dogs Zoey and Noodles.  Graveside services at Temple Mishkan Tefila Memorial Park, opposite 2604 Centre Street, West Roxbury, on Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 2:00 pm. Miriam Barrie

age 95 and formerly of Rancho Bernardo, California and St. Paul, Minnesota, died February 22, 2014 after a brief illness. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by family at MetroWest Hospital in Framingham, Massachusetts. Her parents were William and Florence Cohen of Duluth, MN and her husband of 47 years until his death in 1995, was Dr. Harold Barrie, a dentist and B’nai B’rith leader in St. Paul, MN.

Miriam is survived by her sister, Helen Sall, of Sacramento, CA and formerly of Larchmont, NY; her daughter, Michelle Barrie, of Watertown, MA, her son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Cindy (nee Kurman) Barrie of Chicago, IL; sister-in-law Deborah Baronofksy, of Scottsdale, AZ and formerly of San Diego, CA; nephews Louis Sall (Lorraine) of Sacramento, California; Sherman Sall (Esti), who recently moved to Switzerland; Dr. Ian Baronofsky (Laura) of Austin, Texas; Dr. Sam Baronofsky of San Francisco, CA; two grand-nieces and two grand-nephews.

Miriam was born in 1918 in St. Paul, MN and grew up in Duluth, MN. She earned her bachelor’s degree at St. Scholastica College in Duluth and later, earned her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She was head of the Medical Social Work department at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis and for many years was a psychiatric social worker at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Minneapolis. She developed a close bond with many of her professional colleagues, many of whom became lifelong friends.

Miriam was a longtime member of Mt. Zion Temple in St. Paul and a member of Hadassah and Brandeis Women. An avid reader and lover of the performing arts, she was a supporter of the Minneapolis Symphony, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the Tyrone Guthrie Theater. She and Harold enjoyed many international voyages together.

In the mid-1980s Miriam and Harold retired to Rancho Bernardo, California, where she continued an active life. She was involved with her synagogue, Adat Shalom in Poway, California and served as president of her local chapter of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees). After the death of her husband in 1995 she moved to Seacrest Village in Poway, California, where she lived among many great friends, until she moved to Framingham, MA in 2011 to be near her daughter.

She was an excellent gourmet cook, and prepared many wonderful meals for her family and friends. Miriam was a gentle, caring and socially conscious woman, always with a kind, thoughtful word and a deep intellectual curiosity. She continued to be an avid news and political aficionado until her final illness.
