Sy Demsky

April 9, 2025

We are heartbroken to share that Sy Demsky passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, just nine days before his 93rd birthday. He was surrounded by love in his final moments—his devoted wife of 63 years, Hilda Green Demsky, was by his side, along with their children, Brad and Michele Demsky (and grandchildren Maxwell, Zachary, and Jacob), and Jordana and Larry Alford (and grandchildren Arielle and Mikayla).

Sy lived a life rich in love—both deeply given and abundantly received.

Sy lived a life overflowing with love, purpose, and generosity. To know Sy was to feel deeply cared for—he gave of himself wholeheartedly, always placing others’ needs before his own. More than 40 years ago, Sy was diagnosed with serious heart issues and told he would be living with a heart functioning at only 20%. But anyone who knew him understood—the other 80% was made up of pure love. Love he gave, and love he received, from everyone whose life he touched.

Sy’s passion for helping others never wavered, and his life’s work was a true reflection of that enduring commitment. A pioneer in the field of opioid addiction treatment, Sy spent over 40 years at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York running the methadone clinic, where he changed countless lives. Long before addiction was understood as a disease, Sy was already advocating for those struggling, leading with compassion and science. He held a master’s degree in psychology from NYU and brought both intellect and heart to his mission. Until his final day, he served as the president of Stop Stigma Now, a nonprofit committed to ending the shame surrounding addiction. He also proudly led NDRI, continuing to drive change and hope in the recovery community.

Sy’s journey was as colorful and rich as the life he built. Before dedicating himself to psychology, he served our country during the Korean War, spent time working on a kibbutz in Israel with the early Chalutzim, taught gym and served as a dean in the New York City school system, and even owned a coffee shop in the West Village. As a young man in the 1940s, he played shortstop and second base for the New York Yankees farm team, chasing his dream of becoming a professional baseball player.

It was while working as a dean that he met Hilda, an art teacher. Together, they built a life grounded in love, shared values, and the spirit of Tikun Olam—the commitment to healing and improving the world. Their home was always full of warmth, laughter, and fresh flowers—Sy’s passion for gardening never waned. Whether in a house or a small apartment, he continued to plant and nurture beauty wherever he went, just as he did with people.

Sy was predeceased by his beloved siblings, Irving and Diane Demsky, and their memory, like his, continues to be a blessing.

Sy leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and love. He taught us all what it means to give—to family, to community, and to the world.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Stop Stigma Now, an organization that carries forward Sy’s life mission.

The world is better because you were in it, Sy. We will miss you deeply.

The world will miss you Sy.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to  https://www.stopstigmanow.org/donate/#donate_id

Paula adored her family and friends, and of course, her dogs who gave her so much joy and comfort.

Robert M. Sawyer

April 5, 2025

Robert M. Sawyer of Tisbury, MA passed away peacefully on Friday, April 4, 2025 at his home on Martha’s Vineyard. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kathleen “Sam” Sawyer, and his five children, Robert Sawyer (Marla Kushner), James Sawyer (Athena Sawyer), Kimberly Lindsey (Eric Lindsey), David Sawyer (Elizabeth Entenman), and Michael Sawyer (Talita Ferreira). He was a proud and loving grandfather to seven grandchildren.

Robert was born in 1937 to David and Thelma Sawyer in Brookline, MA, where he was raised with his siblings Jerry Sawyer, Sandra Kurson, and the late Kenneth Sawyer. After graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he relocated to Chicago to pursue new business ventures.

Robert was a respected real estate expert, practitioner, educator, and author. He ran Sawyer Realty Group, a real estate company, in Chicago in the 1970s and 80s and developed numerous condominium conversion projects — some of the first of their kind in the city. One development led to a landmark court case, Sawyer v. Jarvis, which was taken all the way to the Supreme Court of Illinois and judged in his favor — a case that has been referenced ever since in real estate education.

One of Robert’s more unique real estate developments was the structure that supports one of Boston’s most notable icons — the famous CITGO sign in Kenmore Square. For decades, he served as the owner and steward of the structure of the sign, overseeing its upkeep and ensuring that it continued to remain standing. For Boston residents, the CITGO sign is more than just an advertisement; it’s an iconic part of the city skyline, familiar to residents and Red Sox fans around the globe.

After relocating to Martha’s Vineyard in the 1980s, Robert bought The New England Spice Company, a wholesaler and distributor of herbs and spices based out of Dorchester, combining his business and finance skills with his love of spicy food. He also created Dukes Academy, which offered real estate education, and authored the 2008 book Massachusetts Real Estate: Principles, Practices, and Law.

In addition to real estate, Robert was an entrepreneur involved in many business ventures over the years. One of his last projects was creating The Barn Bowl & Bistro, a nationally-recognized restaurant and bowling alley on Martha’s Vineyard.

Robert’s greatest fulfillment came from spending time with his family and helping others. He served as a county commissioner of The County of Dukes County, MA, consulted pro bono to help people achieve the dream of home ownership, and advocated for numerous affordable housing developments on Martha’s Vineyard.

Shirley T. Wise

April 1, 2025

To view the livestream click here.

Shirley T. Wise, 92 yrs, of Newton, passed on March 25, 2025, joining her beloved husband David M. Wise. She is the daughter of the late Lillian (Golden) Applebaum and sister of the late Barbara Malfy. She was also the beloved mother of Betsy (Steve Cohen) and Howard (Janice) and the late Peter (Terry Wilson). Shirley was also the grandmother of Scott Barczewski (Nicole), Dana Barczewski (JD), David, Luke and Samuel Wise, Nicole Johnston and Max Wise (Marissa). She is survived by 8 great grandchildren.

Shirley was born in Dorchester but would say her life began when she met “my David”, the love of her life. Her happiest days were when she moved into the attic of the Wise house with her new husband. There were many Wises and one bathroom, yet she boasted that there were never fights. That was the way she and her husband conducted themselves, always. Her children swear their parents never fought in front of them.

Shirley and David raised three children in Framingham and the Waban section of Newton MA. They reveled in their children’s, grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s lives. They bought a beautiful home in Falmouth MA and had many happy long weekends with their family and Cape friends. She was a “super mom” volunteering at Hadassah, in Children’s Hospital and, for the Children’s Hospital League.

When tragedy struck and David died young in 1988, and her son Peter passed in 1999, Shirley faced challenges but always carried herself with grace. She would pull herself together, snap her fingers and announce “Showtime!” Eventually she moved to Florida, where she lived in Boca Raton. She improved her golf game and would always “putt for dough.” Some of her favorite memories included teaching her grandson Scott to golf, the Passover potato eating challenge and bargains.

Shirley might have been 5 feet tall but she carried herself with twice the stature, like someone that “owned the place.”  She loved travel and saw much of the world in her later years. She loved old movies and was an avid follower of the news. She sought out intelligent conversation and would often engage strangers in conversation. Above all she was ferociously proud of her kids, grandkids and great grandkids that could do no wrong.

Her funeral was held on Thursday, March 27, 2025 at Sharon Memorial Park. The service was livestreamed. The link to view the funeral can be found at www.brezniakfd.com. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital www.stjude.org , or the charity of your choice.

Victor Ostrower

March 30, 2025

Victor Stanley Ostrower died on March 30, 2025 in Brookline, MA. Victor was the beloved husband of Valerie Ostrower, son of Joseph and Ann Ostrower, brother of Gary Ostrower, father of Matthew, Daniel, Samuel, and Jessica Ostrower, and grandfather of Cory, Adina, Joshua, Duncan, Gabriel, Simon, Alex, Solomon, and Frances. Victor died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones, after a brave and dignified fight with pancreatic cancer.

Victor devoted his life to the care and healing of others, through a long career in gastroenterology and hepatology. He was especially known for his kindness, personal touch, and attentiveness to the non-medical aspects of care. When he occasionally took his children to visit his places of work, they were regaled by nurses, doctors, and staff about how wonderful, kind, and loving he was to patients and colleagues alike. Victor gave special attention to those patients nearing the end of their lives and prided himself on helping them and their families find agency, peace, and dignity in their final moments. In the end, he modeled his teachings.

Victor was a devoted husband. He never hesitated to tell anyone who would listen that he was punching way above his weight and fully appreciated his luck. He doted on Valerie at every turn.

He reveled in beauty, both natural wonders and the arts. He was a photographer, an avid participant in the classical music scene, an awful cello player, and an avid museum goer. He was famous for getting verklempt when he described any of these. He shared this love with his family through many vacations to the national parks and great cities, creating cherished memories–and interminable slideshows–that his family recounts passionately and will pass enthusiastically from generation to generation.

Whether you were a family member, a lifelong friend, or someone he just met at the supermarket or coffee shop, you knew Victor as an easy conversationalist, a vivid storyteller, and a spreader of good cheer. His broad smile, easy manner, and natural gregariousness were signs of his implicit trust in others and boundless ability to find joy in any moment.

His warmth and selflessness will be missed by all those fortunate enough to have known him.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025 at 10:30 AM at Temple Isaiah, 55 Lincoln Street, Lexington, MA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Victor’s honor to the American Cancer Society or ACLU.

David F. Squire

March 30, 2025

SQUIRE, David F. Died peacefully at home on February 22nd, age 99. Born in Holyoke, MA, and raised in Brookline, he was an indefatigable go-getter with a big heart and an irrepressible zest for life. While a student at Dartmouth College, David pledged that he would devote himself to public service by the time he turned 40. He also wanted to raise a family and provide them with a comfortable life, while still acquiring all the 100-percent-pima-cotton shirts he desired. So he raised enough cash to buy a small, bankrupt textile mill, and over the next 15 years built it into a profitable company. In 1965, he sold it –a few months shy of his 40th birthday. He then accepted a government position as deputy director of the Job Corps, followed by a stint as senior advisor to the U.S. Mission to the U.N. In 1969, he ditched diplomacy for academia to become vice president of Brandeis University. He retired eleven years later in order to focus on philanthropic causes, such as the American Jewish Committee and the U.N. Global Advisory board, among others. David achieved pretty much everything he set his mind to–and remained a fiercely competitive tennis player into his late 80s. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Patricia; his brother, Alan Skvirsky; three children; four stepchildren; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and the Boston Red Sox. If you wish to honor him, please make a donation to the Heller School at Brandeis or the ACLU.

Suzanne “Sippy” Olarsch

1961 – 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Suzanne “Sippy” Olarsch on March 18, 2025, at the age of 63 in Herzliya, Israel, surrounded by her loving sons and brothers.

Sippy was born in Boston, MA to Jules and Sara “Sukky” Seletz. She grew up in Newton, MA and spent much of her time with her immediate and extended family, often at her Nana Ethel and Papa Jack’s home which was always filled with many other family members she loved to be around. From Shabbat dinners to family vacations, she loved the laughs shared and memories made, with her brothers, Carl, Jay, and Andrew.

Following a middle school winter break volunteering at a local hospital, Sippy was inspired to pursue her education in Physical Therapy. After graduating from Newton South High School with honors in 1978 where she made many lifelong friends, she attended Ithaca College, completing her undergraduate degree in 1982. She then worked as a Physical Therapist in the Boston area fulfilling her childhood passion. Sippy further continued her studies at Boston University, receiving her Master of Science in Applied Anatomy and Physiology/Exercise Physiology.

In 1987, Sippy married Marc Olarsch and they had their first son, Matthew, one year later in Lynn, MA. After moving to Tulsa, OK in 1989, they had their second son, Max, in 1992. Sippy and Marc then moved with their family to Gainesville, FL where they lived for many happy years. There she developed lasting friendships and many memories.

In 2004, following a divorce, Sippy moved with Matthew and Max back to the Boston area to be closer to her mother Sukky and family while she completed her Doctorate in Geriatric Rehabilitation Science at Boston University.

After receiving this advanced degree, Sippy continued her career as an Executive Director in the Home Health industry, working tirelessly to ensure her clients would have the best quality of life within the comfort of their home. She eventually managed care services across the eastern half of the United States.

Following her love for the sea, Sippy made a move to Gloucester, MA in 2020 where she settled into marina life. Embracing the coastal culture, she established close and enduring friendships, and loved sharing her life there with her family and friends.

In July 2024, her love for family inspired her to make “Aliyah” and move to Israel to be close to her recently born grandchildren.

Above all, she greatly loved her family and made sure to instill this in her sons, Matthew and Max. Sippy loved to travel, ski, play tennis, spend time at the beach, and cook or eat with friends and family. Her smile and laughter brightened every room she walked into. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her compassion, determination, intelligence, and vivacious spirit.

Sippy is survived by her beloved mother Sukky Seletz, her sons Matthew and Max Olarsch, her grandsons Boaz and Ido Olarsch, and her brothers Carl, Jay, and Andrew Seletz.

Michael Marcus

March 21, 2025

Michael Marcus of Lake Worth, Florida, formerly of Jericho, New York, was a dedicated and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, teacher, Hebrew tutor, and a friend to thousands.  Michael passed away on March 21, 2025 at the age of 82 after an enduring battle with pancreatic cancer.

Michael was born in Brooklyn, New York to Rae and Sydney Marcus on March 25, 1942. Even in his 80s, if you spoke with him, you knew he was from Brooklyn. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School, and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in business from New York University’s Stern School of Business. He was the first in his family to graduate from a four year university. Michael also received a Master’s Degree in Education from City College in New York.

Michael worked as a public school teacher at PS 147, also in Brooklyn, while simultaneously working as the Director of Youth at Temple Emanuel of Great Neck. To support his family, Michael also tutored children in preparation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and officiated more than one hundred Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and multiple weddings.

First and foremost, Michael enjoyed spending time with his family. However, as a semi and then complete retiree in Florida in his 70s, Michael became an avid pickleball player, often playing several hours per day, 6-7 days per week.  Likewise, he enjoyed playing cards and dominoes with his friends in Florida and going on vacations with family and friends.  Michael worked 6-7 days per week for over a half century, but he had many rewarding years to unwind, travelling back and forth between his homes in Lake Worth, Florida, and Hudson, Massachusetts.

A funeral service and celebration of Michael’s life is being held at the Chabad Jewish Center of Sudbury, 100 Horse Pond Rd., Monday, March 24, 2025 at 1pm followed by a burial at the New Town Cemetery located at 357 Concord Road, Sudbury. She and her sister Sandra were brought up by their Aunt Harriet in Brookline, Massachusetts.  She graduated Brookline High School in 1952 and went on to Wheaton College in Norton, MA, graduating in 1956. She met her late husband, Stephen, at piano lessons when they were growing up in Brookline.  They married in 1957 and stayed in Brookline where they raised their two daughters, Leslie and Laurie.

Alberta was a member of Belmont Country Club where she learned to play golf just after she got married.  She loved the game and became the face of women’s golf for many decades at the club.  She won the Women’s Club Championship 7 times in 4 different decades as well as the President’s Cup.  She won the Women’s Club Championship at the Sugarbush Golf Club 10 years in a row in the mid 1980s to mid 1990s.  She was a fierce competitor who everyone admired.  She was always kind to young golfers who were learning the game and enjoyed taking them under her wing.

In her spare time, she started a company with a close friend called Hang-Ups Unlimited. She designed and created golf accessories which were sold in pro-shops and boutiques around the country.

Alberta was also an avid skier.  In the winter, she spent many years hosting the whole family at her home in Sugarbush, VT, where all four grandchildren learned to ski – a gift they will have forever.   Alberta cooked and orchestrated meals for the entire family every weekend and vacation during the winter.  She made it look so easy.  Everything she put her mind to was done with perfection. Alberta and Stephen also enjoyed traveling the world skiing and playing championship golf courses here and in Europe.

Alberta adored her grandchildren- Derek, Samantha, Jessica and Jeffrey.  They all excelled in sports and Alberta never missed a soccer, lacrosse, squash, baseball or hockey game – rain or shine. Both she and Stephen always attended academic and theater productions at school. They took every opportunity to be involved in each of their lives.  In her later years, she took great joy in spending time with her 3 great-grandchildren, Palmer, Sloane, and Zachary.

In Loving Memory of Michael Alan Rosenberg

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, neighbor, teacher, and coach.  We mourn the loss of Michael “Mike” Rosenberg, a soul who lived a life filled with kindness and wisdom. He was devoted to his family, his community, and his faith.

Mike was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 7, 1949. Throughout his life, he was a true example of Jewish values, embracing the teachings of Torah with love and reverence. His commitment to family, friends, and the Jewish community was unwavering, and he always strived to live a life of integrity and compassion. Mike was an active member of Temple Emunah of Lexington for nearly five decades. He cherished the relationships he built there, particularly with the many students coming of age. His connections with the Jewish community included 36 years at Maimonides School in Brookline where he was devoted to the students, staff, and alumni extending across the globe to his second home in Israel.

Mike was raised in Rutland, Vermont where he was a proud and rowdy member of Thee Guild garage band, where he met the love of his life (55 years of marriage), and where he made deep friendships that he enjoyed until his last days. Mike was an alum of the University of Vermont where he was active in the AEPi fraternity and attended every home Catamount game. He served in the Vermont National Guard after his graduation.

Mike spent most of his adult life in Bedford Massachusetts – the entire town quickly became his family.  He served his community in many ways – most recently on the School Committee, Board of Selectmen, and Bedford Embraces Diversity Committee. Though he was the most passionate about Bedford Athletics – coaching the Astros with fierce commitment, rapturously announcing games from the BHS Press Box, and covering Bedford High School Buccaneers for the Bedford Minuteman and the Bedford Citizen as intensely as if he was reporting from the battlefield. He made a personal and lasting impact on countless young athletes. So many of them keep in touch – remembering his counsel, his jokes, and the victory ice creams.  His dedication extended beyond Bedford, serving as the Metro Editor for the Lowell Sun, and as a volunteer and cheerleader for the Lowell Folk Festival (his favorite event!) for many years.

Mike cherished his loved ones above all.  He will be remembered by his wife Dawn Rosenberg, his children Sarah Rosenberg, Rebecca Newell and her husband Shawn Newell, grandchildren Sam, Jojo, Carter and Brendan, siblings Helen Rosenberg and her husband Keith Richter, Hilary and Ed Hersh, Susan and Joe Aibinder, David Womback, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He is also survived by so many dear friends and community members whose lives were touched by his kindness and spirit.

Mike was wildly enthusiastic about eating. He thrived when listening to live music – especially blues, jazz, and funk. He laughed hard at live comedy and emotional at the theater. He regularly traveled overseas and road tripped up the coast.  He drowned himself in books (sometimes reading three at a time) and long articles any chance he got – at a red light, waiting for the subway, when there was a dip in any conversation. He supported small businesses and gave to charities near and far.  He embraced life fully, grounded in his beliefs.

The funeral service will be held 10 am at Temple Emunah, 9 Piper Road, Lexington, MA on Thursday, February 27,2025 with burial to follow at Shawsheen Cemetery, 1 Shawsheen Road, Bedford, MA. We will recite Kaddish in memory of Mike, and all who knew him are invited to join us in honoring his life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Temple Emunah or the charity of your choice.

He made our lives and the world better.  May Mike’s soul be bound up in the bond of life, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

Susan Epstein

February 22, 2025

It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Susan “Susie Q, Mama Sue, Geegee” Epstein of Canton on February 22,2025. A beloved late wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, friend, family member and multitalented individual. Susan lived a life full of passion, creativity, and joy, touching the hearts of all who had the privilege to know her.

Susan was no doubt the “matriarch” of her whole family. She was deeply proud of all her family who were the light of her life. Her love for them knew no bounds, and they brought her endless happiness and pride.  Beloved wife of late Marshall Epstein. Dear daughter of the late Benjamin Gross and Mildred Shapiro. Devoted mother of Hayley Lopes and her husband Ted, Brett Epstein and his wife Alexandra, Rayna Carbone and her husband Christopher. Dear Geegee of Aidan, Micaela and Benjamin Lopes, Devin and Ciara Epstein, and Chanyn and Maddox Carbone. Devoted sister of Bennaye Gross Pardo and late Marvin Gross. Aunt of Nicole Pardo. Lastly, best dog-mom to Sophie. Her family filled her heart with happiness and their laughter and accomplishments were constant sources of gratification for her.

Susan was a loving and devoted wife to late Marshall Epstein for almost 50 years who despite faced the challenge of being a paraplegic in a wheelchair from an unforeseen accident, was cared for with grace and unwavering commitment. Her strength and love provided him with comfort and support throughout their years together.

A social butterfly at heart, Susan had a gift for bringing people together. She thrived in the company of friends, always ready to share a laugh, offer support, and celebrate the good times. Her infectious energy-spunky, funny, strong, stubborn as well as an abundance of kindness will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to experience it.

Susan had a wide range of interests that brought happiness and fulfillment to her life. Her pride was being the best hairdresser, where she brought beauty to the world, one hairstyle at a time. A true artist with success, she not only created amazing looks, but also formed everlasting connections with those she served. Susan also had an enduring love for dancing in which her rhythm was always on point as well as for the theaters. She devoted many years working at multiple venues in Boston whether it was concerts, plays, and/or musicals.

Robert “Bob” Sharkansky passed away on February 20, 2025 after a brief illness in his 89th year of life.  He was surrounded by his family and caretakers at the time of his peaceful passing.  Born on September 30, 1936 in Fall River, Massachusetts he was the son of Abraham and Ethel Sharkansky (of blessed memory).  He was a proud graduate of Durfee High School Class of 1954.  After high school Bob enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in West Germany.  Upon returning home, having limited resources and options his mother sent him to attend Bryant College in Providence RI where he would study accounting and “become a successful accountant like your Uncle Eddie.”

Bob did just that.  After school he met and married his wife Linda Hibel of Brockton.  They remain married and in love after 64 years.  His love for business, however, was very close second. In 1960 Robert Sharkansky opened his own accounting firm and developed a client base fueled by professionalism, client attention and expertise.  His practice grew for over 50 years into Sharkansky LLP, a premier regional accounting and business consulting firm.  With numerous partners, associates and staff the firm was ultimately sold to a large national firm.

Growing both a business and family in Brockton, Bob was always active in the Greater Brockton community feeling strongly about the role citizenship played in his life.  He committed significant time to the leadership at the Old Colony YMCA, Brockton Hospital and Temple Beth Emunah as well as various local business organizations. He was an avid runner at D.W. Field Park and enjoyed the frustration of tennis and golf.

Most importantly, Bob lived to provide stability for his family.  His most precious gifts are his grandchildren Emma Rose and Cooper Sharkansky and Sophie and Max Singer.  Bob is also survived by his wife, Linda Sharkansky of Dedham, MA, his son James Sharkansky of Mashpee, MA and granddaughters Olivia and Mia Sharkansky.  He also leaves a daughter, Jan Singer and her husband David of Cotuit MA a son Edward Sharkansky and his wife, Jennifer of North Easton MA, his brother Richard and sister-in-law Barbara of West Palm Beach FL, his sister Carol Weinberg of Stoughton, MA and sister in law Elaine Stone of West Palm Beach, FL and Scituate MA along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Stanley S. Treitman

February 18, 2025

Stanley S. Treitman died of natural causes at the age of 98 on February 18, 2025 at NewBridge on the Charles Senior Living in Dedham. He is survived by his loving wife and life partner of 76 years, Ruth, and his four children, Rick, Bob, Beth, and Jim.

Born in Los Angeles to Sigmund and Celia Treitman, Stan attended LA public schools and served in the Navy as a radio technician in the Philippines during the closing period of World War II. Upon his return, he enrolled at UCLA where he met Ruth. After UCLA he did graduate work at Cal Berkeley, before returning to Southern California to teach high school science in Colton.

Stan was an early member of the Physical Sciences Study Committee (PSSC) and helped develop a new method of hands-on science physics education. Before he implemented PSSC at Colton High, a handful of students studied physics – within a few years, five full sections of students enthusiastically enrolled in his classes. In 1965 Stan joined a USAID/Harvard project to implement PSSC at a model secondary school in Nigeria, where the family lived for two years.

Upon returning to The States, Stan taught in the science department at Wheelock College. The family moved to Wellesley where Stan and Ruth lived for over 50 years. In 1982, Stan and Ruth, who taught math at Dana Hall, left the world of education and went into business, opening a retail software store in Burlington. Stan, Ruth, Jim, and later Rick and Bob, built Softpro into a successful software and technical bookstore.

Upon retirement in 2005, Stan continued to share his technical and accounting expertise in his numerous volunteer positions. He served Wellesley Weston Lifelong Learning and the Friendly Aid Society. He was a board member and VP/Membership Chair of The Jewish Genealogical Society of Greater Boston who honored him in 2018 for his outstanding contributions building their database and communications technology. Ruth and Stan were among the founders of Wellesley Neighbors where they published the newsletter, built the web site, and took part in many of the activities – particularly the jazz concerts.

Ruth and Stan spent summers on Newfound Lake in New Hampshire for many years where the family gathered and many of their grandchildren learned to swim. The lake house continues to host memories for those Stan leaves behind.

In 2018, they moved from Wellesley to NewBridge on the Charles, where they joined old friends and made new ones. They were regulars at the evening concerts and lectures for many years.

For many NBOC computer users, Stan was the help desk, and he used his expertise at page layout for newsletters for multiple organizations including NBOC publications.

In addition to the love of his life, Ruth, Stan leaves behind his children Rick (Louise) of Lexington, Bob (Leslie Fisher) of Concord, Beth (Michael) Paysnick of Longmeadow, and Jim (Chris Garlasco) of Golden, Colorado. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Sarah Paysnick, Annie Treitman, David Paysnick, Kate Brown, Amy Paysnick, Jo Hogan, Lauren Treitman, Olivia Treitman, and Rachel Treitman, and nine great grandchildren.

The family thanks his caregivers, Dianne Wilks, Pearl Cashman, and Vida Atakpo, and hospice nurses who worked hard to keep Stan comfortable and at peace in his final days.

A service in his memory will be held at NewBridge on the Charles at 2pm on March 30.

Donations in Stan’s memory can be made to the Wellesley Food Pantry (wellesleyfoodpantry.org), the NewBridge Employees’ Scholarship Fund (send check payable to “NewBridge on the Charles” with “Scholarship Fund – Stan Treitman” on the memo line to NewBridge Scholarship Fund, NewBridge on the Charles, 5000 Great Meadow Rd, Dedham, MA 02026), or the charity of your choice.

Nancy Spitz

February 17, 2025

Nancy Lois Spitz (née Rosoff) passed away peacefully in her sleep on February 17, 2025, at the age of 75. A devoted mother, pioneering stockbroker, and fierce competitor, Nancy lived a life of ambition, resilience, and love.

Born on August 25, 1949, in Springfield, MA, to Howard and Elnore Rosoff, Nancy was the younger sister of Susan Rudman, who predeceased her in 2009. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from American International College in 1971 and briefly worked as a teacher before embarking on a groundbreaking career in finance. At a time when women were rarely seen in sales roles, she shattered expectations, becoming one of the first to rise from secretary to licensed stockbroker on Boston’s Wall Street. Once she established herself as a top performer, she made it her mission to help her family build careers in finance, knowing the opportunities it could provide.

Nancy’s competitive spirit extended beyond the office—she was a world-class backgammon player, winning the Ladies Open Championship in Nassau and finishing as runner-up at the World Championships in Monaco. She never shied away from a challenge, whether at the office, backgammon board or in the stands as a passionate sports fan. Sundays were sacred in her household—not for rest, but for football, and everyone knew better than to interrupt her during a game.

In 1985, she married Marshall Richard Spitz, and in 1986, they welcomed their son, Preston Harris Spitz. Soon after, she retired from finance to focus on her family, channeling her leadership into her faith and community. She became president of the Sisterhood at Temple Beth Avodah in Newton, MA, and was later named to the Board of Trustees. She also had a deep love of music, performing as a child under the name “Jazzbaby Nancy.”

In 2014, Nancy was diagnosed with lung cancer, a battle she fought with grace and determination. Though she completed treatment in 2023, its toll—combined with the heartbreak of losing her beloved husband—was immense, and she soon faced rapid-onset dementia.

Nancy is survived by her son Preston Spitz, brother Jay Rosoff, nephew Stephen Rudman, stepdaughters Sarah Spitz and Hilary Arens, and many beloved grandnieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park on Friday, February 21st, at 12:45 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Combined Jewish Philanthropies, reflecting her lifelong dedication to faith, family, and community.

May her memory be a blessing.

Fred Ezekiel

February 10, 2025

To view the livestream please click here.

Fred Ezekiel loved four institutions: His family, Temple Emunah in Lexington, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the United States of America. They gave him the life he lived. He died peacefully in his sleep Sunday morning, February 9, 2025.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen Ezekiel Handmaker (David Handmaker), his son, David Ezekiel (Elise Richman Ezekiel), grandchildren Maina Handmaker (Richard Joyce), Orli Handmaker (Sam Howe), Callan Handmaker, Hilana Ezekiel (Adam Schlitt), Micah Ezekiel and Nili Ezekiel, great grandsons Tavi Howe and Ronen Joyce, his sister, Flo Urbach, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Bess Ezekiel, sisters, Clarette Freedman and May Stein, brother, Shaoul Ezekiel, and his parents, Naima and David.

Born in June 1929 in Baghdad, Iraq, Fredrick David Ezekiel of Lexington grew up focused on his education. In Iraq, he attended the Baghdad Alliance Israelite Universelle and the American Jesuit Baghdad College, the latter a rather uncommon place for a Jewish boy to attend high school.

He was accepted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with help from his Jesuit teachers and his considerable brain power. His arrival in America in 1948 marked the beginning of the end for Iraq’s “Babylonian” Jews. A few years after Fred left Baghdad nearly all would be expelled after more than 2,000 years.

The United States enabled the brilliant Fred to live the life he wanted – a life that would not have been possible in his native country. He earned several degrees including a doctorate in mechanical engineering from MIT and became an assistant professor. He continually credited education and MIT as his tickets to success.

As he was starting his career, he wanted to look for a wife. He met Bessie Robinson of Brookline and proposed within a month. They were married at the MIT Chapel in August 1956. He became a U.S. citizen in 1959. Fred and Bess built a family together. They welcomed Karen in 1957, and David in 1960.

His career took off as his children grew older. He left MIT and worked for several years as a consultant to technology companies and later started his own company, Servoflo Corporation, in 1977. He sold his own inventions, including the patented magnetic shaft seal for computer hard drives. He and Bess made the magnetic liquid in their own basement! In the 1990s, his son David joined him at Servoflo, building a successful electronics distribution company.

Fred took an active role at the local synagogue, Temple Emunah. While not a particularly spiritual man, he valued the Jewish traditions and the communities that formed out of religious observance. He served as the congregation president in the ‘70s. In the last 15 years, he was primarily concerned with fostering social connection and shared interests among congregants. Just over a decade ago, he endowed the Ladle Fund to bring people together through social events at synagogue.

Fred lived the American dream. He was an entrepreneur and family man thankful to his adopted country. He had a sense of civic pride evident in his desire to build social connections among countrymen, coreligionists, and family members, whether at Emunah, MIT, or beyond. All who knew him will miss him dearly.

The funeral will be at 1pm on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Temple Emunah, 9 Piper Road, Lexington, MA 02421. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Fred’s honor to the Temple Emunah Ladle Fund or the MIT Education Innovation Funds for Teaching and Learning.

He taught thousands of students in these areas as well as in the general class, “Gov 100,” which he loved to teach.

In addition to his academic work, he was an avid traveler, exploring the world through his extensive research and personal adventures. Outside the world of academia, Steve was known for his love of sailing and his ability to engage in spirited and thoughtful debates—he truly enjoyed a good argument. He was a fierce competitor on the squash and tennis courts and was hard on ideas, but soft on people.

Steve is survived by his wife, Erika Kates; his son, Ken Goldstein; his daughter-in-law, Amanda Goldstein; his grandchildren, Samantha Goldstein and Nathaniel Goldstein; his sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Jerry Lowenstein; his nephew.
