Joseph Charles Sharameta, Sr.

May 16, 2014

Joseph C. Sharameta, Sr., 89, of West Boylston, passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 12, 2014, in his home. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Tubert Sharameta, on May 21, 2006, the love of his life whom he was married on August 24th, 1952.. He is survived by his son, Joseph C. Sharameta Jr. and his husband John M. Doherty, and grandsons Daniel Doherty and Kyle Sharameta of Bridgewater and his daughter Juli Sharameta Giannetta and her fiancé Erik Johnson and grandson Jacob Joseph Giannetta, of West Boylston, with whom he lived. Also survived by sisters, Josephine Talbot and her husband John of Grafton, Dorothy (Dottie) Kuczka of Millbury, and Karen Drouin of Florida, cousin Richard Sharameta, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. . Predeceased by his brother-in-law Ronald Drouin of Florida, Stanley Kuczka of Millbury, brother and sister-in-law Joseph and Shirley Fitzgerald of Boylston, , brother and sister-in-law John “Jack” and Martha Tubert and uncles Jozef and Antoni Sharameta.

Born in Worcester in 1925, he was the youngest child and only son of Charles (Kazimierz Szarameta) and Frances (Franciszka Gryszkiewicz) Sharameta. His father and mother are mentioned often in the Images of America series book, The Polish Community of Worcester, with many pictures in the book shared by his sister Dorothy ” Dottie” Kuczka, without whom most pictures , memories, family history and facts would have been lost. Joe was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving in Washington, DC during WWII. He attended Wentworth College, leaving to assist his father Charles in running the former Charles Restaurant of Millbury Street in Worcester, which was famous for its lobster and seafood. He was assisted there by his wife Pat as his “Hostess with the Mostest”. One of his fondest memories was when Henry Mancini dined there and graciously posed for pictures. Joe had a love of the music of Mancini, Sinatra, and all Big Band Era and classical jazz music. He loved to listen to the “Jazz Brunch” on WICN. He was a fine golfer, enjoying playing at the Wachusett Country Club, which was for many years owned by he and Pat’s best friends, the late Edward Marrone Sr. and his wife Shirley who were godparents to his son, Joseph Jr. He spent many years on hunting trips to Anticosti Island with his friends, although Joe tended to hunt with his camera. He was fascinated by the “Old West”, and was quite a marksman. He loved to answer his grandson Jacob’s questions about WWII and about firearms, and instructed Jacob in target shooting and gun safety. Being with Grampy was always a pleasure for Jake, Dan, and Kyle, as Joe was a quiet man, with sweet moments of his quiet sense of humor making appearances. Joe was a long time member of the Worcester Pistol and Rifle Club, and a proud member of the NRA. He worked for a number of years for AMI in Worcester. He was a very talented photographer, developing many of his own pictures in his basement darkroom, fondly referred to as “Dad’s Room”. Many family members and friends are proud to have Joe’s pictures framed and hung in their homes, as he truly was talented. He was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Church. Joe recently spent his 89th birthday with his son Joe Jr. and his beloved son-in-law John at Mohegan Sun, where he always enjoyed a plate of oysters and his shot of whiskey.

A special thanks to the many nurses and therapists who served him through the VNA of Worcester, employees of Summit Eldercare of Worcester, the kind nurses at the St. Vincent’s Hospital dialysis unit, and most especially thank you to Dr. Robert Black of St. Vincent’s Hospital, and Joe’s home health care assistant Nadine Taylor, who aided him for a number of years and was adored by Joe and his daughter Juli.

At Joe’s request funeral services will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 85 Astor Ave., #2, Norwood, MA 02062 – www.kidney.org or to a charity of one’s own choosing.

Lawrence Levy

May 9, 2014

Lawrence Levy served the Kennedy administration.

Amid the Cold War boom in defense contracts and frenzied research into aeronautics and space travel, Lawrence Levy launched Concord-based Allied Research Associates Inc. when he was a 28-year-old instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The company mushroomed from three men in 1951 to more than 225 employees worldwide in eight years, catapulting Mr. Levy to the forefront of national defense designs, diplomacy circles, and later, solar energy development.
The Kennedy administration sent him to live in Paris and advise Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on Europe and North Africa. He was also named defense minister to Thomas K. Finletter, the US ambassador to NATO.

At cocktail parties in those days, Mr. Levy was known as a handsome, charming raconteur who loved to tell a good joke, but never spoke much about his work because most of it was classified, according to his family.

Mr. Levy, whose company was later acquired by Boeing Corp., died of pneumonia May 7 in Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 90 and had lived in Framingham.

“He always said he wanted to live to be 100 and get shot by a jealous husband,” said his oldest daughter, Madelyn Renee, an opera singer who lives in Milan.

The line captured Mr. Levy’s joie de vivre during a lifetime spanning his service in World War II as a flight engineer in what was then Burma to work in his 80s as a management consultant for a firm he started called Northern Ventures Corp. in Cambridge.
After his death, his family began uncovering surprising details of his career from boxes of personal papers and yellowed newspaper clips tucked away at his home.

In a 1959 article from the Boston Sunday Herald, Mr. Levy offered prescient remarks about the future of space travel. “Lunar Landing in less than 10 years, Newton scientist forecasts,” the headline read.

“Who knows what we’ll discover — new metals; perhaps a new source of energy, heating and lighting homes and factories for a small cost; things to make life on Earth better,” Mr. Levy told the paper. “And when man arrives on the moon, it’ll be a stepping stone to other planets.”

Through his papers, his family also learned about his work on secret postwar nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. From 1949 to 1951, Mr. Levy was a project director working on a military program created to determine the effects of atomic blasts on planes delivering the bombs.

His papers also revealed he managed research programs for NATO in computers, electronics, and operations and helped formulate Raytheon’s sale of Hawk missiles to Saudi Arabia in the 1960s as a vice president of the company.

Meanwhile, his Allied Research briefly became a subsidiary of the Boeing Corp. at the end of 1950s. Then in 1965, Mr. Levy made news when he was rehired by his old company and named president. He formed a British affiliate called Allied Systems and found success selling the aircraft known as the Harrier, a vertical take-off attack jet, to the Marines.

By the late 1970s, Mr. Levy shifted his focus from war machines to solar energy. He became president of Northern Energy Corp. with its Solar Energy Center, one of four regional centers created by the US Department of Energy to promote solar applications.

“Larry could pick up the phone and speak to any congressman, any senator on the Hill at that time,” recalled Joanne Luongo, who began as a secretary for Northern Energy 37 years ago and climbed the ranks. She was still working with Mr. Levy at Northern Ventures when he died.

“He was my teacher, my mentor, my best friend, and a gentleman at all times,” she said.

Mr. Levy always wore a suit and tie, and liked to work at “warp speed” each day, Luongo recalled, “but he didn’t stand over you with a bat. He was always pleasant. In 37 years that man never raised his voice to me, never. He gave you credit for having a mind. He was a teacher in his own inimitable way.”

A New York City native, Mr. Levy was the oldest child of Anna and Albert Levy, who was an accountant.

A bright student, he graduated from high school at 15, and received a bachelor’s degree in engineering from New York University. He was in ROTC in college and joined the Army Air Force during World War II, serving as a lieutenant.

After the war, he went to MIT under the GI Bill and graduated with a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering in 1948.

His marriage to Jacqueline Friedman ended in divorce. They had three daughters.

Mr. Levy was married for 43 years to Ruthe McClenon.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he leaves two other daughters, Janice of Ithaca, N.Y.; and Sharon Loeff of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a grandson; and two granddaughters.

A service was held and burial was in Sharon Memorial Park.

Mr. Levy held a pilot’s license for most of his life and was a lifelong lover of photography. Among his cameras was a Rolleicord he bought in China that had once belonged to a Japanese general, he told his family.

His daughter Janice, who is a professor of photography and cinema at Ithaca College, said she has begun sifting through his negatives dating back to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in the 1930s.

As young girls, Mr. Levy’s daughters sometimes became annoyed at his ever-present camera, Janice said. Now she can see the artistry he brought to those snapshots.

“I realized, once I became a photographer, there was a real vision there,” she said. “He was very charismatic and fun.”

Carol Ann Gould

April 27, 2014

Gould, Carol Ann Passed away on April 26, 2014, after a courageous battle with MDS and Leukemia. Born in Amarillo, Texas on June 15, 1941, she is survived by her loving partner Boris Kanieff of Waltham, MA, mother of Lloyd (Christy Transier) Gould of Key West, FL, Melanie (Adrian Pembroke) Gould of Kimberley, BC Canada, brother-in-law Robert Gould of Provincetown, MA, proud grandmother of Conor Gould (5) and Asher Pembroke (2), nephews Adam (Rachel) Gutow-Ellis and Matt (Pam) Ellis of Houston, TX, cousin Andrea (Loren) Weinstein of Dallas, TX. Preceded in death by her mother, Miriam Schlesinger, father, Irving Ellis, and brother, Larry Ellis. Survivors also include Nick Kanieff and Natasha Kanieff of Boston MA and Mark Kanieff of Los Angeles, CA as well as many cousins and devoted friends. “From the moment I met her, I fell in love with her spirit.” Not just one person felt that spirit but all who were fortunate to know her. Carol Ann Gould was a woman of uncommon good cheer whose love of life influenced everyone and everything she did. Thousands of cards just to say, “I care” with her familiar happy face with glasses signature made the day brighter. Her glorious smile and infectious laugh put cares and tears aside, and we laughed with her. A selfless person who forever placed the needs of others first, she was the inspiration to family, friends and mere acquaintances to do the same. When she retired after 14 years of dedicated service as administrative assistant to Dr. Nancy Harris at Mass General Hospital she was the recipient of the coveted “chair”. The diagnosis of MDS gave her opportunity to share with others how to confront the disease by LIVING. Sounds of the ocean and sand between her toes, flowers of spring, winter’s snow all fed her love for nature and its beauty. And that beauty transcended to the incomparable love story of Carol Ann and her Bo. She leaves these words, “I will always be with you my dearest Bo.” And from Bo, “You were the world to me, phenomenal friend, great partner. You are a person in the world, but to me you are my world and the love of my life.” The family extends special thanks for the loving care of so many: Dr. Nancy Harris, Dr. Yi-Bin Chen, Dr. Amir Fahti, Dr. Stephan McAfee, Dr. Thomas Spitzer and the staff of the Cox 1 Clinic and the Lunder 10 nursing and care staff of Massachusetts General Hospital. The funeral will take place graveside on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 12:45 pm at Sharon Memorial Park, Rabbi David Grossman officiating.
