Katz-Formerly of Brookline and Newton, on April 23, 2016.  Beloved wife of the late Ralph Katz.  Devoted mother of Susan Benjamin and her husband Dr. Barry Benjamin, and Jerome Katz and his wife Nancy Green.  Dear grandmother of Robert Benjamin and his wife Lauren, Ezra Benjamin and his wife Ricki, Jonathan Katz and Elizabeth Katz and her husband Alexander Putterman. Anna (Segal) Castleman

April 23, 2016

At age 104, Anna Segal Castleman died peacefully at home in St. Louis on April 10, 2016.  Anna and her late husband Benjamin had three children: Ruth Griffin (wife of the late Emery) of Rochester NY, Jean Chase (wife of Lewis) of St. Louis MO, and Paul Castleman (husband of Linda Blackstone) of San Francisco CA.  Anna loved and was loved by her seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Anna graduated from Wellesley College in 1934 and remained an active alumna through her 75th reunion.  Anna’s other main interests included helping families of foreign MGH doctors settle in Boston and encouraging children’s interest in art as a docent at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Temple Israel in Boston, 477 Longwood Ave. (parking on the Riverway) Boston.

In memoriam contributions may be made to either The Wellesley College Fund or the Museum of Fine Arts Docent Program.

Dorian Kermisch

April 20, 2016

of Sudbury, MA, formerly of Penfield NY, died peacefully at home on April 20, 2016 after a long fight with cancer.

He leaves behind his wife Nira, son Ron and his wife Alison, daughter Sharon and her husband Randall Martens, grandson Benjamin Kermisch, granddaughter Lena Martens, cousins Roxana and her husband Abe Shalo of Brooklyn, NY, their daughter Sibyl and her husband Joseph Wilmont of Mineola, NY, Adina and her husband Harold Bartram of London, England.

Dorian was born in Romania, served as an officer in the Israeli army and came to the United States to study. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and then devoted his career to conducting research for Xerox where he was awarded many patents.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking long walks with his dog, traveling and reading.

Private services will be held.

Marcia Elaine (Pearis) Gerrig

originally from Binghamton NY, and Marblehead and Swampscott MA, daughter of the late Rose Olsen Pearis and Philip Pearis and the late Arlene J. Pearis, sister of the departed, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday April 17, 2016.   She was married to Attorney Burton W. Gerrig for 58 years.  Her most important achievement in life was her three children, five grandchildren, and her new granddaughter Sophia. Robert, her oldest son, 57, of Natick, MA is a Tufts University graduate and an IRS employee for over 27 years.  Her middle son, Daniel, 55, of Leesburg, VA, is a Cornell University graduate and is an employee of the Department of Defense.  Her daughter Jennifer, of Medway MA, 52, is a graduate of the University of Southern NH and is a manager at Restaurant 45 in Medway MA. Jennifer and David, a wonderful son-in-law, have three boys, the eldest son Craig, 23, is a graduate of the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.  His Fiancé Sophia is studying to be a reiki master.  Their middle son Christopher 21, is a junior at the University of Massachusetts, and is studying kinesiology and intends to pursue a PHD.  Her youngest son Brian, 18, is the Medway High School Senior Class President, a dedicated student, and will be studying economics in the fall at the University of Pittsburgh.  Her middle son, Daniel, and his beloved wife, Yehudit have two children.  Aylon, 17, is the Riverside High School Junior Class President and a talented baseball player.  Their daughter, Ariella, who recently had her bat-mitzvah, is a beautiful talented girl and an aspiring tennis player. Living for her children and grandchildren was the greatest joy in Marcia’s life.

Marcia graduated with a degree in elementary education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and received her master’s degree in Moderate Special Needs from Northeastern University.   Beyond her masters, she furthered her education via additional special needs courses.  As a teacher, Marcia worked with special needs children for 32 years and enjoyed all the time she spent with these very special students. She was known as a patient, kind and loving teacher.

During her time in Parlin House Hospice Residence, Marcia was regularly surrounded by her dear friends Helen Brody and Sandy Bornstein, members of her book club, fellow teachers, and a wonderful hospice staff too many to mention. Marcia had a hard but fulfilling life, suffered many difficulties, but, courageously rose above them.

On Thursday, April 21st at 11:00 am, a memorial service will held at Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Rd, Newton Center.  Interment at Glenwood Cemetery, 25 Glenwood St, Natick, MA will immediately follow the memorial service.  Shiva will be held at the home of Jennifer Walsh, 10 Kimberly Drive, Medway, MA on Thursday, April 21st immediately following interment until 8:00 PM, on Friday April 22nd from noon until 7:00 pm and Saturday April 23rd from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm for Havdalah followed by Shiva.  Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Dr. David Barbie Research Fund, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA, 02115.

Liz Schwarz

Liz Schwarz

Liz Schwarz died on April 16th peacefully at her home in Milton, MA.  Liz was a long-standing practitioner and advocate for social causes particularly related to homelessness and women’s health. She was also a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend.  Liz touched the lives of countless people in the Boston area through her relentless pursuit of helping those in need whether they were clients, patients, friends or family.

Born Elizabeth J. Schwarz to Thomas and Shirley Schwarz, she was raised in Hartsdale, NY, and graduated from Woodlands High School, Colgate University and Boston University. Liz worked as a social worker in Boston for more than 20 years, at Tufts New England Medical Center and later in private practice. She was known for her extraordinary ability to empathize and help others solve their most difficult and complex personal problems. Liz’s passion was her love of family and her large community of close friends. She loved nothing more than spending time with her wife and daughters. Her warmth lent itself to building strong relationships and her sense of humor and whimsy with friends and strangers alike will be greatly missed.

The list of family who love and will miss her includes her wife Lisa Perricone and her daughters Viviana Schwarz and Sara Perricone. She is predeceased by her mother Shirley Schwarz. Also surviving are her father Thomas H. Schwarz, step-mother Susan Schwarz and step-father Leon Gutherz, her brother Doug Schwarz, sister-in-law Beth Marcus and nephew and niece Marcus and Julia Schwarz. She is also survived by Erich, Linda and Nick Hammerle of Vero Beach, Florida and many aunts, uncles and cousins

A memorial service will be held at Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Road, Newton, MA 02459 on Thursday, April 21st at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Liz’s name to Camp Homeward Bound, Coalition for the Homeless, 129 Fulton Street, New York, NY 10038.
