Irene (Berman) Lazar

Irene (Berman) Lazar, a lifelong resident of Whitman, died September 10, 2014. She was the daughter of the late Rose (Bickman) and Abraham Berman; loving aunt of Pamela Markson and Mark Goff. Irene was the sister of Ida and Viola. In 2006, she moved to the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater. Irene was a personnel manager for an insurance agency in Brockton and worked in  the Whitman Tax Collector office for more than twenty years until her retirement in 1987. She was an avid reader and interested in arts, sports and gardening. Remembrances may be made to a charity of your choice

Rita Keller

September 8, 2014

age 99, passed away at her home in Chestnut Hill on September 8th.  She was the daughter of the late David and Anna (Foodem) Kapstein and sister of the late Doris Sloane and the late Seymour Kapsten. Rita was the devoted wife of 52 years of the late Irving Keller. She leaves a daughter Susan  Keller and partner, Bryon Miseph, of East Falmouth and Costa Rica. Rita was the beloved Nana of Amanda Keller of Los Angeles.  Rita’s greatest pleasure in life was family. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren. Rita loved cooking, the arts, flowers and supporting Jewish charities. She did various volunteer work in her lifetime including teaching English to adult immigrants even while she was in her nineties. Rita was blessed to have kind and loyal caretakers; Teesha, Lena, Sue Ann and friend and housekeeper Claire. They made her last year special. Graveside Services will be held Thursday, September 11th, at Sharon Memorial Park, at 10:45 am. Memorial observance and luncheon will immediately follow the service, at Rita’s home until 8:00 pm. Another memorial observance will be held at Susan’s home in East Falmouth on Monday, September 15th from 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Hadassah Hospital or Brandeis National Committe.

Eleanor (Drourr) Adelman

of Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Newton and Brookline, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2014 at the age of 88.  She was the beloved wife of the late Ely (Al) Adelman, with whom she shared 64 years of marriage; and the daughter of the late Lillian Drourr of Brookline. Loving mother of Susan Bernstein of Waltham and Meryl Adelman of Philadelphia, PA. Adored grandmother of Zev-Noah and Benjamin Steinlauf, of Philadelphia, PA. Graveside service on Thursday at 12:45 o’clock at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, MA, followed by Shiva at the residence of her daughter Susan, from 7 to 9 pm on Thursday night, and Friday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Stanley Sawyer

Stanley was known as “The Man of 1000 Voices” in Boston radio before going on to New York to become one of the premier television commercial voice over artists. He was also an avid painter and sculptor who created a number of busts, most notably of Martin Luther King, Jr. that are dedicated in parks in Harlem, NY and Rahway, NJ.

Jerold Mervis

Jerold Mervis- Born August 5, 1925, Connellsville, PA, died peacefully August 31, 2014, Danvers, MA of cancer. Jerry enlisted in the Army Air Force and flew over 35 missions as a radio operator/gunner on a B-24 in the Pacific Theatre during WW II, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart and Air Medal. In 1949, he married Evelyn Slatin of NYC, and raised four beloved children: David, Paul, Nancy, and Carol. Jerry and Evy moved to Sarasota in 1981. He is survived by his children, their spouses, 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless special friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, three brothers, and his parents. Private services have been held. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Dana Farber Cancer Institute. –

Beloved wife of the late Louis Dana Alpert, and devoted daughter of the late Edith and Samuel Varnick. Loving mother of Stephen S. and Stephanie Alpert, Carol and James Herscot, Ferne and the late Howard Arbetter, and Cheryl Alpert and Thomas Timko. Proud grandmother of Jill Herscot and her husband Andrew Bartley, and Bradley Herscot, Charles Alpert and his wife Nikki, Heidi McNeil and her husband John, and Andrew Alpert, Arthur and Edie Arbetter, Ann Fischell, Joan Rosenberg, Ellen Spear, and Eben and Louis Chason Timko, and 17 great-grandchildren. Josephine was elegant and gracious, never letting age or poor eyesight get in her way. She was the moral and emotional center of a generationally and geographically extended family that will miss her always optimistic perspectives. Graveside services at Sharon Memorial Park on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 10:45 am. Following services, memorial observance will be at the home of Ferne Arbetter until 8 pm Wednesday evening.
