PARADISE
MARY J. (SPINA)
Of Belmont, MA, and formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, on October 19, 2012. Death came quietly at home, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Beloved wife of Dr. Jack L. Paradise; loving mother of the late Della (Collins) Moore; and devoted stepmother of Dr. Jan Paradise of Newton, MA, Julia Paradise of Washington, DC, Emily Paradise of Arlington, MA, and the late Daniel Paradise; loving sister of Antonette Colvin of Columbia, SC, and the late Mauro, John, Nicholas, and Frank Spina. Mary was born in Morgantown, WV to Italian immigrants Louise and Pietro Spina on March 1, 1926. At the age of 50, after a career as an administrative assistant, most recently at Montefiore University Hospital, she entered the University of Pittsburgh, later graduating with a degree in art history and American literature. In 1983, as the Cold War continued between the United States and the Soviet Union, Mary led a group of Pittsburgh women in establishing the Pennsylvania chapter of Peace Links, an organization of women led nationally by the wives of U.S. members of Congress and committed to promoting peaceful alternatives to nuclear war. Among those leaders were Teresa Heinz and Joan Specter, wives of then Pennsylvania Senators John Heinz and Arlen Specter. Mary served first as founding president of Pennsylvania Peace Links, and later as a board member until she became ill in 1997. On another front, in 1991 after campaigning with other residents in an unsuccessful bid to prevent demolition of the historic Syria Mosque in Oakland, Mary founded and for several years served as president of the nonprofit organization Preservation Pittsburgh, which continues to the present its mission to preserve and protect historic Pittsburgh architectural landmarks. Apart from her leadership skills and her social consciousness, Mary’s kindness and graciousness were legendary, and will long be remembered by the many friends and associates who enjoyed her hospitality. Interment at West View cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA will be private, but a Memorial Service will be scheduled in the near future. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to UNICEF, www.unicef.org or the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, www.paconserve.org
