S. David Goldberg, 79, of Brockton and Edgartown, MA
BROCKTON — S. David Goldberg, well-known attorney and real estate investor, died Monday, September 29, following a long illness. Mr. Goldberg died peacefully surrounded by his family. A Boston native, Mr. Goldberg had lived in Brockton since the 1960s. In addition to his home in Brockton, Mr. Goldberg along with his wife, Carol, had a summer home for 30 years on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard in Edgartown.
Mr. Goldberg was born July 29, 1935, the son of the late Arthur and Esther Goldberg. He was a graduate of Boston Latin High School, and earned his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University. Following graduation from Brandeis, he enrolled at the Boston University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor.
After law school, Mr. Goldberg and his wife relocated from Boston to Brockton. He began as a solo practitioner for many years, specializing in family and criminal law. Mr. Goldberg then recruited several partners to join in his law practice, which became known as Goldberg, Eskenas, Schlossberg & Kaplan.
In the mid-1980s, Mr. Goldberg left the firm he helped establish and served as the City Solicitor for Brockton under Mayor Paul Studenski, acting as corporate counsel to the Mayor, department heads, and other city officials. When his term as City Solicitor ended, Mr. Goldberg began real estate development and investments in Brockton and along the South Shore. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Bank and Trust Co. (formerly Plymouth Home National Bank) as well as People’s Savings Bank of Brockton. In the early 1990s, along with his son, Kenneth, Mr. Goldberg re-established his law practice, which became known as Goldberg & Goldberg. Although Mr. Goldberg had been semi-retired for the last few years, he did practice law up until several weeks prior to his death. His son recalls that, “Even though Dad was semi-retired, he was always busy. He managed his real estate investments and he helped anyone who walked in the door, and if he couldn’t handle the case, he would find someone who could.” Mr. Goldberg was active in many civic and charitable organizations throughout the years, including President’s Council of Stonehill College and fund raising for Good Samaritan Hospital, Brockton Public Library, The Striar Jewish Community Center of Stoughton (now the Old Colony Y of Stoughton), and numerous other charities.
Mr. Goldberg was proud of his many business accomplishments, but they pale in comparison to his devotion and love for his family. His wife of fifty-two years, Carol A. Goldberg; a daughter, Karen L. Goldberg of Santa Monica, CA and her spouse, Elizabeth Hervatic; a son, Kenneth J. Goldberg and his wife Jeanne and their three children, Sophie, Julia and Gabrielle of Needham survive Mr. Goldberg. A sister, Frances Gilfix of Florida, also survives him. In addition, his sister-in-law Dorothy Bier and her husband Max, of New York, survive Mr. Goldberg. A sister, Joan Baker, predeceased Mr. Goldberg.
There will be a Memorial Service for Mr. Goldberg on Tuesday, October 21, at 10:30 am at Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA. The family has established a fund in memory of Mr. Goldberg. Anyone who wishes may contribute to the S. David Goldberg Memorial Fund at Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA 02494 via mail or online at http://www.tbsneedham.org/Get_Involved/Donate/How_To_Donate
