Irving M. Chester

September 25, 2014

Age 97, of N. Branford, CT, formerly of Brockton and Cape Cod, MA, died on Sept 25, 2014.

Raised in Brockton, he served in the Army Air Corps in WWII teaching airplane mechanics. He was part of the family business, Chester Print, in Brockton, and operated the Monument Beach Marina on the Cape. An avid gardener, he enjoyed teaching others how to grow food and loved sharing the produce he grew. A graceful dancer, he taught swimming and arts and crafts as a young man, and loved watching  Boston sports teams. He proudly served as a Commander of the Jewish War Veterans in Brockton.

He is survived by his beloved wife and companion of some 25 years, Marcia Copel, and his children JoAnne Chester Bander (Michael), Natalie Fisher Guerin, Joshua Copel (Alexandra), Matthew Copel (Laura) and Marjorie Preston (Steven); grandchildren Stephen and Deborah Bander, David (Deborah) and Jason Fisher, Rachel, David, Daniel (Anna), Sarah and Ilana Copel and Katherine (Jason) and Emmanuelle Preston; and great-grandchildren Gabriel and Jacob Fisher.  He was predeceased by his wife, Pearl Rosenberg Chester (1989) and brother and business partner, Myron D. Chester.

Graveside services on  Sunday, September 28, 2014, at  Pride of Brockton Cemetery, 197 South St., Stoughton, MA, at 12:00 noon.  It is suggested that memorial gifts be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 26 Broadway, New York, NY 10004-  (800) 533-CURE (2873).

Harvey H. Weiner

Harvey H. Weiner, of Framingham, passed away on September 14, 2014. He was 92. Born in Boston, Harvey was raised in Dorchester.  He was a graduate of the Boston Latin School and attended the Lincoln Technical Institute and MIT’s University Extension program.  During WWII he served in the United States Army with the 2nd Battalion Field Artillery School Detachment.  Harvey was employed as a civilian electrical engineer at Hanscom Air Force Base.  He was a volunteer at the Framingham Police Department and was a member of the Jewish War Veterans.

Harvey was the beloved husband of the late Reva (Greez) Weiner. Devoted father of Paula and Jon Weiner, and Susan Smolkin and her husband Martin. Loving brother of the late Edward Weiner. Dear grandfather of Joshua Smolkin and Zachary and his wife Cristina Smolkin, and great-grandfather of Aletheia.

Graveside services at Plymouth Rock Cemetery, 1000 Pearl St., Brockton, on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 11:00 am. Irene was the sister of Ida and Viola. In 2006, she moved to the Life Care Center of West Bridgewater. Irene was a personnel manager for an insurance agency in Brockton and worked in  the Whitman Tax Collector office for more than twenty years until her retirement in 1987. Rita Keller

age 99, passed away at her home in Chestnut Hill on September 8th.  She was the daughter of the late David and Anna (Foodem) Kapstein and sister of the late Doris Sloane and the late Seymour Kapsten. Rita was the devoted wife of 52 years of the late Irving Keller. She leaves a daughter Susan  Keller and partner, Bryon Miseph, of East Falmouth and Costa Rica. Rita was the beloved Nana of Amanda Keller of Los Angeles.  Rita’s greatest pleasure in life was family. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, their children and grandchildren. Rita loved cooking, the arts, flowers and supporting Jewish charities. She did various volunteer work in her lifetime including teaching English to adult immigrants even while she was in her nineties. Rita was blessed to have kind and loyal caretakers; Teesha, Lena, Sue Ann and friend and housekeeper Claire. They made her last year special. Graveside Services will be held Thursday, September 11th, at Sharon Memorial Park, at 10:45 am. Memorial observance and luncheon will immediately follow the service, at Rita’s home until 8:00 pm. Another memorial observance will be held at Susan’s home in East Falmouth on Monday, September 15th from 5-8 pm. Jerold Mervis- Born August 5, 1925, Connellsville, PA, died peacefully August 31, 2014, Danvers, MA of cancer. Jerry enlisted in the Army Air Force and flew over 35 missions as a radio operator/gunner on a B-24 in the Pacific Theatre during WW II, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart and Air Medal. In 1949, he married Evelyn Slatin of NYC, and raised four beloved children: David, Paul, Nancy, and Carol. Jerry and Evy moved to Sarasota in 1981. He is survived by his children, their spouses, 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and countless special friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, two sisters, three brothers, and his parents. Private services have been held. Devoted mother of Marjorie Gordon and her husband Patrick Wagner of Drexel Hill, PA and Andrew Gordon and his husband David Blocher of Redding, CT. Loving grandma of Alexandra and Julia Harrington. Dear sister of the late Doris Epstein and Fred Kaplan. A pianist in her earlier life, Mrs. Gordon was born in Fall River and resided there until moving to New York to attend the Juilliard School. She returned to Fall River after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and married her husband as soon as possible after his return from the war. She began giving music lessons in Needham, and later became an accomplished embroiderer and an active teaching member of the Bay Colony Society of Embroiderers in Chestnut Hill. Later in life she also developed a love of crosswords and fitness walks. Mrs. Gordon was an active member of the North Hill residential community in Needham where she spent her last years. She will be remembered for her warmth and graciousness to all who knew her. Services at the Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Rd., Newton Centre, on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11:00 am. BEDFORD – Jacob Wren Throckmorton, beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away from natural causes on July 22, 2014 in Bass River, Massachusetts. He was born on October 21, 1994 to parents Mark and Karen (Hersh) Throckmorton. Jacob was a kind and talented individual, known by family, friends, and peers for his infectious laugh, sense of humor, and creativity. He devoted his young life to music and art, exploring his own musical passions through song writing, vocals, and acoustic performances, while designing album, banner, and webpage artwork for several emerging American hip hop and rap musicians. Most recently, Jacob served as an ongoing contributor to the content and layout of a popular fashion blog. He was excited to begin studying at the College of Art and Design at Lesley University in the fall. Jacob’s love for humanity and compassion for others was the fabric of his daily life. He enjoyed spending his summers with family and friends on Cape Cod. He was blessed to share exceptionally close relationships with his late grandparents and great-grandparents, with whom he visited each weekend. His love of family inspired him to volunteer with the Council on Aging in Bedford, Massachusetts, where he had worked with senior citizens of his local community since middle school. Jacob will be forever loved and remembered by his parents, Mark and Karen; his brother, Joshua; his sister, Hayli; his extended family; and his dear friends. He was the grandson of the late Phyllis LeBlanc and step-grandson of Jerry LeBlanc; the grandson of the late Aharon Hersh and step-grandson of Reus Chaya Hersh; the grandson of Dana and Erma Throckmorton; and the great-grandson of the late Samuel and Lillian Chafetz, and Otis and Eda Wren. Born March 6, 1930 in Everett, MA, Norma married David Rowe on September 10, 1950. They are survived by children Cathy, Andy and Kenneth, Andy’s wife Cyndee Rowe, grandchildren Mahriana Rofheart, Saraswati Rowe, David Rowe and William Rowe, brother Melvin Ligums, sister Roslyn Brunell and sister-in-law Elaine Ligums. May she join her cherished granddaughter, Nicole Rowe, brother Earl Ligums and beloved husband, David Rowe, in eternal peace. age 101, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family at the Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor, Michigan on July 19, 2014. She was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 12, 1913 to Daniel and Anna Levitan. After growing up in New York, she moved to Miami Beach where was secretary to Rabbi Irving Lehrman of Temple Emanu-El.  She then married and moved to Holyoke, MA, where she was active in the Sons of Zion synagogue for many years and worked in the family business, Feinstein Leather Company. Upon retirement, she moved to Florida. Ten years ago she moved to Ann Arbor, MI. She is predeceased by her husband Samuel Cotzin.  She leaves behind a son, Alan (Bette) Cotzin of Ann Arbor, Michigan; a daughter Norma (Michael) Passo of Fairfield, Connecticut; grandchildren Miriam (Daniel) Burg of Baltimore, MD., Debra(Rick) Kellner of Columbus, Ohio, Marc(Julie) Passo of Denver, Co., and Ellen(Jeffrey) Shaw of West Hartford, CT.; and six great grandchildren , Ellie, Shamir, Zoe, Shira, Abraham and Ezra. Milton and Sidney were her two adoring brothers who predeceased her. She will always be remembered as a woman devoted to her family, and as one who gave of herself to others. She was loved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed. Interment will take place at B’nai Brith Cemetery in Worcester, MA. Douglas Lurie was born in Boston in 1950 and lived on Seaver Street in Roxbury until his family moved to Randolph in 1958.

After graduating from Randolph High School in 1967, Doug earned an Associates Degree from Quincy College and then a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Boston State College in 1972.  After working for St. Johnsbury Trucking Company and various sales jobs, he opened a retail concession at Bob’s Discount in Revere from 1978-1991.

Doug established and became proprietor of Doug’s Bargains on Broadway in Chelsea, MA in 1991 and Doug’s Jewelers, in Chelsea in 1997, working there until 2009. As part of the Chelsea community, Doug served on the Board of Directors of the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce and was Past-President of the Chelsea Kiwanis Club.   Most recently he was a member of the management team at the original Bob’s Discount in New Bedford, MA and he was passionate about working at the Revere Flea Market every Sunday.

Doug was an active member of Temple Beth Am.  He was an Advisor and Youth Director of Randolph USY from 1975-1978 when the youth group had a membership of more than 400, the largest in the New England Region.  Doug served on the Temple Beth Am House Committee, was a member and past Co-Chairman of the Youth Committee, and was a long-serving member of both the Temple Beth Am Board of Directors and the Temple Beth Am Brotherhood Board of Directors.  In 2013 the New England Region of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs awarded Doug the Keeper of the Flame Award, which honors leadership in Jewish life.

A Free Mason since 1971, Doug was a third generation Past Master of Germania Lodge (now The Consolidated Lodge, A.F. & A.M.) and was a Past President of the First Worshipful Masters Association of Massachusetts.

Doug loved learning and speaking Spanish, talking about and eating food, going out to restaurants, driving and exploring.  He greatly enjoyed his most recent trip to Israel, and vacations in Cape Cod and Maine.  Most of all, he passionately loved his family and (hundreds of friends).

Doug made his home in Randolph with his wife of 41 years, Cindy.  He has three children: Devra Dutton and her husband Zachary of Arlington; David of New York City; Robert of Quincy; and two granddaughters, Sylvie and Cora Dutton…all of whom were the lights and loves of his life.

Jon S. Davis.  Age 70, of Hingham died July 14 of glioblastoma, a form of brain cancer.  Adored husband of 46 years of Jane Carmen Davis, formerly of Newton, exemplary father of Hadley Davis Rierson and Carrie Davis Lebovich of Los Angeles, and a cornerstone of both his extended family and the Massachusetts real estate legal community. Born in Ottawa Hills, Ohio, he was a graduate of the University of Michigan and president of its class of 1965. He earned a law degree from the George Washington National Law Center and while there was a staff member of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s Kerner Commission.  In 1968, he and Jane joined the Peace Corps moving to Quito, Ecuador.  He later founded the real estate firm Driscoll & Davis, renamed Stanton & Davis in Marshfield. A member of the Abstract Club, he served as president and board member of the American Legal & Financial Association and the Real Estate Bar Association of Massachusetts (REBA).  He was a founding board member of the Talking Information Center, a Marshfield nonprofit providing broadcasts for the visually impaired.  An avid golfer, he looked forward to summer days at the Cohasset Golf Club.  In addition to his wife and daughters, he is survived by his brother, Sam Davis of Berkeley, California, a sister, Beth Karren, of Piedmont, California and four grandchildren.
