Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 1, 1927 and raised in Patterson, NJ, Don came to Boston after serving in the US Army to attend Harvard University in 1946 and never left. He graduated from Harvard with a B.A. in Applied Physics in 1950, received a Master of Sciences from Harvard, and his PhD in Engineering Sciences and Applied Physics from Harvard in 1956.

After completing his studies, Don enjoyed a long and distinguished career as an engineer, scientist, entrepreneur, senior official in the Federal government, and consultant right up to the time of his death.  He was granted multiple patents, published many articles in scientific journals, and was a Fellow of the IEEE and a Member of Sigma Xi, an engineering sciences honor society. He had over 65 years of experience and expertise in artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and command-and-control research, design, and marketing.  From 1956 to 1965, Don worked as a Senior Scientist at GTE Sylvania.  Subsequently, he co-founded and served as CEO of several information technology and computer companies, including IRA Systems, one of the first commercial cathode ray technology computer companies, and Infoton.  He served as Executive Vice-President of Addressagraph Multigraph.  For eight years, Don was a Technical Director of the United States Air Force.  In that capacity, he oversaw development of radar systems and the command-and-control-infrastructure of the Air Force. He next consulted with many companies, including Draper Labs and Alphatec.   Over the last 15 years of his career until his death, Don worked on and was recognized as one of the leading experts on optical character recognition technology and its use in license plate recognition and cargo container reading systems across the United States.  In 2014, he was featured in the book Men Still at Work: Professionals Over Sixty and on the Job by Elizabeth F. Fidler.  When asked by the author why he was still working at the age of 86, Don responded “I have things to do so I don’t have to look for things to do.”

Don was a dedicated, life-long philanthropist and leader of the Jewish community of Boston.  He was a founding member of Temple Emunah and Temple Isaiah in Lexington.  He held many leadership positions in the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, was an Honorary Trustee, and raised money for the organization for over 50 years.  He also served in leadership positions and on the Board of Directors of the American Technion Society.  In these positions, he participated in many missions to Israel.

Don enjoyed spending time with his family and friends on Cape Cod, where he and his wife had a home in New Seabury for almost 40 years, and in Vermont where he skied with his family and friends at Mount Snow for many years.  Don was an avid boatsman, skier, tennis player, biker, and runner.  He loved classical music, listening to the Boston Symphony at Symphony Hall and at Tanglewood.  To his family and friends he was known for his ever present sense of humor; with a twinkle in his eye, he enjoyed nothing more than sharing a joke, pun, or one of his many stories. He was an eternal optimist and will be missed by those who knew and loved him.

He qualified as a professional engineer and was licensed in both California and Massachusetts.

During his professional career Mr. Greenberg was highly respected for his activity in the technical and academic community. He taught quality engineering courses under the auspices of Northeastern University and North Shore Community College as well as the University of Massachusetts at Lowell where he was an adjunct professor in the mechanical engineering department.  In its formative years, prior to its merger into Tufts University, he served as professor and laboratory director at the Bernard M. Gordon Institute for Engineering Leadership.  While there he taught courses in quality, reliability, and component engineering.

His primary professional organization was the American Society for Quality (ASQ) which he originally joined in 1958 and maintained activity throughout his life time. S. David Goldberg

October 2, 2014

S. David Goldberg, 79, of Brockton and Edgartown, MA

BROCKTON — S. David Goldberg, well-known attorney and real estate investor, died Monday, September 29, following a long illness. Mr. Goldberg died peacefully surrounded by his family. A Boston native, Mr. Goldberg had lived in Brockton since the 1960s. In addition to his home in Brockton, Mr. Goldberg along with his wife, Carol, had a summer home for 30 years on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard in Edgartown.

Mr. Goldberg was born July 29, 1935, the son of the late Arthur and Esther Goldberg. He was a graduate of Boston Latin High School, and earned his undergraduate degree from Brandeis University. Following graduation from Brandeis, he enrolled at the Boston University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor.

After law school, Mr. Goldberg and his wife relocated from Boston to Brockton. He began as a solo practitioner for many years, specializing in family and criminal law. Mr. Goldberg then recruited several partners to join in his law practice, which became known as Goldberg, Eskenas, Schlossberg & Kaplan.

In the mid-1980s, Mr. Goldberg left the firm he helped establish and served as the City Solicitor for Brockton under Mayor Paul Studenski, acting as corporate counsel to the Mayor, department heads, and other city officials.  When his term as City Solicitor ended, Mr. Goldberg began real estate development and investments in Brockton and along the South Shore. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Bank and Trust Co. (formerly Plymouth Home National Bank) as well as People’s Savings Bank of Brockton. In the early 1990s, along with his son, Kenneth, Mr. Goldberg re-established his law practice, which became known as Goldberg & Goldberg. Although Mr. Goldberg had been semi-retired for the last few years, he did practice law up until several weeks prior to his death. His son recalls that, “Even though Dad was semi-retired, he was always busy. He managed his real estate investments and he helped anyone who walked in the door, and if he couldn’t handle the case, he would find someone who could.” Mr. Goldberg was active in many civic and charitable organizations throughout the years, including President’s Council of Stonehill College and fund raising for Good Samaritan Hospital, Brockton Public Library, The Striar Jewish Community Center of Stoughton (now the Old Colony Y of Stoughton), and numerous other charities.

Mr. Goldberg was proud of his many business accomplishments, but they pale in comparison to his devotion and love for his family. His wife of fifty-two years, Carol A. Goldberg; a daughter, Karen L. Goldberg of Santa Monica, CA and her spouse, Elizabeth Hervatic; a son, Kenneth J. Goldberg and his wife Jeanne and their three children, Sophie, Julia and Gabrielle of Needham survive Mr. Goldberg. A sister, Frances Gilfix of Florida, also survives him. In addition, his sister-in-law Dorothy Bier and her husband Max, of New York, survive Mr. Goldberg. A sister, Joan Baker, predeceased Mr. Goldberg.

There will be a Memorial Service for Mr. Goldberg on Tuesday, October 21, at 10:30 am at  Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA. The family has established a fund in memory of Mr. Goldberg. Anyone who wishes may contribute to the S. David Goldberg Memorial Fund at Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Avenue, Needham, MA 02494 via mail or online at http://www.tbsneedham.org/Get_Involved/Donate/How_To_Donate
