Ruth (Alpert) Boyer, 101 WORCESTER – Ruth (Alpert) Boyer, age 101, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on May 19th. Her husband of 38 years, Edward Boyer died in 1975. She leaves her son, Stuart Boyer and his wife Fay of Lake Worth, FL. She was predeceased by her daughter Carol Carbonneau, who died on Oct. 3, 2002, and by her infant son Allan Boyer, who died of spinal meningitis. She leaves seven grandchildren, Jon Carbonneau and his wife Sherri, Lisa wife of Steven Greene, Amy wife of Stephen Letourneau, Edward Carbo-nneau and his wife Kristen, Andy Boyer and his wife Amy, Michael Boyer and David Boyer and 16 great grandchildren, Michelle, Danielle, Nicole, Adam and Kevin Carbonneau, Marissa, Devin and Taylor Greene, Tyler and Collin Letourneau, Lindsey, Nicholas and Cassidy Carbonneau, Jessica, Remy and Zachary Boyer and her good friends. She was predeceased by her brothers Nathan and Irving Alpert. She resided at the Jewish Healthcare Center and previously at Eisenberg Assisted LIving Residence and for 55 years on Kinnicutt Rd. She lived a long and productive life, working until she was 95 years old. She had worked for Leib Insurance Co., Alan Corp. and Kanef Drug Co. She was an avid reader of the Worcester Telegram, reading it daily without the use of glasses. She loved to go to Val’s Restaurant in Holden to celebrate Mother’s Day. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Monday, May 21th in Beth Israel Synagogue on 15 Jamesbury Drive under the direction of Richard Perlman of Brezniak-Rodman Funeral Home of Newton. Burial will be in Holy Society Cemetery in Leicester. Memorial Observance will be held through Tuesday Evening at the residence of Lisa and Steven Greene, 25 Waterville Lane in Shrewsbury. “Archie” Freedman, 100
WORCESTER – Aaron “Archie” Freedman, 100, of 2 Silver Spruce Circle, died peacefully Thursday night at his home.
He leaves two sons: Sidney and his wife Lisa Freedman of Worcester and Dr. David Freedman and his wife, Dr. Susan Peirce of Clemson, SC; his brother, Eli Freedman and his wife Rebecca of Worcester; six grancdhildren: Dov, Dalilah, Dahci, Desirae, Hannah and Micah and four great-grandchildren: Cara, Michael, Annabelle and Dylan. His wife of 47 years, Dorothy (Shack) Freedman died in 1994. His son, Gerald died in 2005.
Archie was one of 10 children whose parents emigrated from Russia. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1911 and the family moved to Worcester in 1916. He attended Providence St. Grammar School, Grafton Street Jr. High and Commerce High School. Archie served as a Staff Sergeant in World War II, at General Eisenhower’s staff headquarters in Europe.
In 1938, Archie started the Olympic Sports and Trophy Company with his brother Eli; several years later, brothers Joe, Mike, Ed and Ben joined the business. In 1960, the company moved to 204 Main Street, where it is still operated by Archie’s son Sidney.
Archie was an outstanding athlete. He learned many of his skills at the Ionic Avenue Boys Club, which he joined in 1920. In 1930, he was selected for the Telegram & Gazette All City All-star basketball team, the same year Commerce High School won the all-city title. Post high school, Archie played for several teams, including the Young Men’s Hebrew Association. He later  played handball and racquetball. After passing the age of 50, he won the State of Massachusetts racquetball championship in the Master Division and was Class A doubles champion in handball with partner Warren Williams. In 1982, he was awarded the David W. Armstrong Award from the Worcester Boys Club Alumni Association, given to members whose achievements in adult life were influenced in a significant way by their active years of membership in the Boy’s Club.
Funeral services will be at 11:30 am on Sunday, May 20th at Temple Sinai, 661 Salisbury St., under the direction of Richard Perlman of Brezniak-Rodman Funeral Home of Newton.
Burial will be in  B’nai Brith Cemetery. Memorial observance will be announced.

Sylvia (Peterman) Grace, 91 of 240 Lynnfield St. Peabody passed away on Wednesday May 16 at her residence. Her husband of 61 years, John M. Grace died in 2005. She leaves two sons Richard Grace  S. Grace and his wife Elaine of Bedford, MA, Dr. Robert Grace and his wife Linda of North Kingstown, RI, a daughter, Kathi wife of Anthony Coppola of Peabody, two sisters, Muriel “Mimi” Chafetz of Braintree and Ruth Cousin of FL; a brother, Gerald Peterman and his wife Lee of NH, six grandchildren and one great grandson.

She was born in Boston, a daughter of Eli and Flora (Maisel), and she lived in Worcester for over 50 years before moving to Peabody.

She volunteered for thousands of hours for Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital and for The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She belonged to The Worcester Crafts Center, where she taught Knitting and other crafts. She was a 54 year member of Temple Emanuel.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday May 18th at  Brezniak-Rodman Chapel 1251 Washington St. West Newton, MA under the direction of Richard Perlman. Fayne, Alex D.
34, died suddenly on Monday, May 7, in Boston, MA. Born in New York City, he attended The Wellington School in Columbus, OH; Columbia College in New York, NY, and earned his MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. Alex was a founder and COO at Pfizer’s Centers for Therapeutic Innovation. Previously, he held commercial and strategy roles at MedImmune, in Gaithersburg, MD, and Genentech in San Francisco, CA. Alex is survived by his wife, Sara Green; son, Elliot Marcus Fayne; parents, Harriet and Henry Fayne; and brother, Zachary. Simone (Solomont) Weinert,76, of 770 Salisbury St., Worcester  died on Thursday, May 3rd.

She leaves her husband of 56 years, Dr. Sanford Weinert, three daughters; Stacy Weinert of Worcester, Hilary wife of Marc Hershman of Newton and Ashley Weinert of Rohnert Park, CA; two sisters, Shelah Jaeger of Framingham and Sydney wife of Alvin Karloff of Marlboro; three grandchildren, Jason and Leora Hershman and Dana Jo Weinert.

She was born in Newton and was a daughter of S. Leo and Ruth (Bass) Solomont and had lived in Worcester for 56 years.

She was a accomplish sculptor and an amazing hostess and cook.

She had formerly been a member of Temple Emanuel and had been the Secretary of the Board of Directors.

She had a brilliant academic career at Newton High School and Wellesley College.

Bernard M. “Ben” Porter, 91, of 475 Chandler St., died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, April 30th.

His wife of 66 years, Doris (Coblentz) Porter passed away on June 14th 2008.

He leaves four children, Steven Porter and his wife Rosine of Reno, Nevada, Eric Porter and his life long  friend Diane DeCiccio of Leicester, Harri-Ann Porter wife of John Brooks of Hardwick and David Porter and his wife Elizabeth of Northborough; ten grandchildren, Tiffany Kolander, Christine Adams of Colorado, Ananda Bena-Webber of New York City, Alisan Porter Autenrieth of California, Rebecca and Jacob Porter of West Millbury, Lee-Anne and William Porter of Northborough, Ashley Brooks of Charleston, SC, and Josiah Brooks of Nantucket and two- great-grandsons, Michael Scionti and Maverick Kolander, both of Colorado; a brother-in-law, Bernard Coblentz and his wife Joan of West Boylston; two sisters-in-law, Sandra Coblentz of California and Aileen Porter of Worcester; eight nieces and nephews, Hollis and Hope Coblentz, Ellen Leavitt, Melvin and Judy Porter, Candy Porter, Sherry Shamash and Hal Coblentz.

He was predeceased by his brothers, Harold and David Porter and a brother-in-law, Ken Coblentz.

He was born in Worcester and was a son of Louis and Gussie (Levy) Porter. 

He was a graduate of Classical High School where he served on every class reunion over a period of 70 years.  He also graduated from Franklin Institute in Boston.

He served in the Navy during WWII and the Korean War.  He saw action in Attu, Iwo Jima and in Okinawa.  He proudly saw the American Flag lifted on Mount Suribachi.  He was acting Quartermaster for the Col. Irving Yarock Post #32 of the Jewish War Veterans and was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.  He was a Pharmacist Mate First Class before he was honorably discharged. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal-3 Stars, Amphibious Forces Insignia, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippines Liberation Medal.  For many years he owned and operated the Holden Pharmacy with his brother Dave, and for 40 years he had been a travel agent with Valley Travel in Holden, and of late, with Travel Solutions in Westborough.  In October of 2008, he led his last travel group to Ireland for the Wexford Opera Festival.  He also led 76 cruises, almost all with groups.

He was a member of Temple Emanuel for over 55 years and he liked to brag that he found G-d everywhere, a life member of  the Retired Men’s Club of Greendale, of which in 1964 he started the Club’s Travel Program.  He was a board member and Past President of Opera Worcester, a member of Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland, the Scottish Rites of Worcester and Boston, Aleppo Shiners Lodge of Wilmington and Worcester County Shrine Club. He was a member of the Greendale YMCA for 50 years. He had been a Past President of the Massachusetts State Pharmacy Association.

He was happy to give sermons at the Genoa Community Church in Nevada, where his son Steven lived.

Over the years he enjoyed golfing, tennis and hunting.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Thursday, May 3rd, in Temple Emanuel, 280 May St., under the direction of RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery.

Herbert  I. Corkin, of Key Biscayne, FL, formerly of Chestnut Hill MA, passed away on May 1, 2012 surrounded by loving family in his home. Beloved husband of the late Ruth (Reznick) Corkin. Son of the late Charles and Olga (Feldman) Corkin. Devoted father of Marjorie and her husband George Kaplan, Janice Corkin and Manfred Rudolf, and the late Charles and Robert Corkin. Proud grandfather of Robin and her husband Michael Price, Robert and his wife Emily (Kumler) Kaplan, William Kaplan, John Rudolf, Lee and her husband Charles Manning, David Rudolf  and Katherine Rudolf. Cherished great-grandfather of Chloe Price, and Maximillan Kaplan. Loving brother of the late Joseph and Alvan Corkin, Bertha Diamond, Freda Mirkin, and Doris Tanner. Born in Boston, resided in Chestnut Hill, and moved to Key Biscayne FL, Herbert was an officer and a gentleman. He was a veteran of WWII, and flew with the Flying Tigers under General Claire Chennault. He was Chairman and  CEO of the Entwistle Company in Hudson, MA since 1954. Mr. Corkin was a philanthropist of many charities including Children’s Hospital, The National Museum of Jewish Heritage, and  Brimmer and May School. Daniel Burdick, 96, formerly of Syracuse, NY, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, in Boston, MA. He was a general surgeon and surgical oncologist in private practice in the Syracuse community for nearly 50 years. A devoted physician, surgeon and oncologist; a passionate supporter of classical music and the arts; and an ardent reader until his last days, Dr. Burdick was an extraordinary healer who brought his expertise and compassion to all who sought his care.

Dr. Burdick left his imprint on the lives of everyone who knew him. “The world has truly lost a special person”… “a true gentleman”…”a Great Man: not just a nice man or a decent man, but a Great Man,” are just a few of the comments expressed by those whose lives he touched.

Born October 21, 1915, in Syracuse, NY, he was the son of the late Joseph and Bessie Burdick, and the husband of the late “Billie” Burdick for 61 years.

Dr. Burdick was raised in Syracuse, where he graduated from Nottingham High School. He received his A.B. from Syracuse University in 1936 and his M.D. from Syracuse University Medical College in 1940. He completed his graduate medical training in pathology and in surgery at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City from 1940 to 1947 and in surgery at the Syracuse Medical Center from 1947 to 1948. He was named a Fellow in Oncology at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1950.

As a captain in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946, he was stationed on the Pacific island of Tinian as an Army surgeon during the final days of World War II.

Dr. Burdick joined the faculty of the Health Science Center in Syracuse as a clinical instructor of surgery in 1948 and was later promoted to clinical professor of surgery in 1969. He was director of University Hospital’s Tumor Clinic and served as the director of the Central New York Cancer Registry from 1955 to 1975. Dr. Burdick served on the medical staffs of the major Syracuse hospitals, and his private surgical practice has grown to become one of the premier general surgery practices in Central New York. Many of the surgical techniques in use today were pioneered by Dr. Burdick.

As coordinator of cancer teaching at the Health Science Center, Dr. Burdick was a role model for both his colleagues and his students. He was a dedicated physician-educator with a strong commitment to the personalized care and caring of the cancer patient. Dr. Burdick was the author or co-author of numerous articles regarding the diagnosis, evaluation and management of cancer.

Dr. Burdick held memberships in numerous prestigious professional societies and community organizations, and also held leadership positions with the American Cancer Society at the local, state and national levels.

Outside his professional career, Dr. Burdick had an exceptional love of classical music and the performing arts. He served as a member of the board and Executive Committee of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra for many years, and was chairman of Music Director Search Committees and the Executive Director Search Committee. He was also the founder and past president of the Central New York Performing Arts Medicine Association. He and his wife were avid supporters of the Marlboro Chamber Music Festival in Marlboro, VT, for 50 years.

Surviving are his five children, Amy Burdick of Chestnut Hill, MA, Janet Burdick Rosen of Newton, MA, Joseph Burdick of Lakewood, CO, David Burdick of Edwardsville, IL, and Lisa Burdick Yoder and husband Albert W. of Treasure Island, FL. Dr. Burdick is also survived by three grandchildren, Althea Burdick, Kimberly Rosen and Jessica Yoder; a younger brother, Arnold Burdick, of Hilton Head, SC.

Ralph H. Gowen- of Newton, passed away peacefully at age 91 on April 30, 2012. Beloved son of the late Ralph and Myra Gowen . Formerly of Newton, MA and Johannesburg,  South Africa, passed away on April 26^th, 2012 at Newbridge on the Charles, Dedham, MA.  He was 89 years old.

He leaves his loving wife of 57 years, Dorrit, his son Alan and Daughter-in-law, Paula of Bellevue, WA., his son Jeffrey and daughter-in-law Beth of Newton, Ma., son Paul and daughter-in-law Tracy of Greensboro, NC., and six grandchildren, Jessica, Jamie, Karla, Julia, Elijah, and Arin.

Born in the Ukraine, Dr. Senior grew up and was educated in South Africa.  In his early twenties, in 1948, he joined the South African Mahal, and went to Israel to fight in the Israeli War of Independence.  Between 1949 and 1954 his time was spent furthering his medical career in pediatrics first at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and then at University College Hospital in London, England.

He returned to South Africa in 1954 where he married, and joined a specialist pediatric group for five years in Johannesburg. Realizing the constraints of living in South Africa, he with his wife and 3 sons immigrated to the United States in 1960 where he lived until his death. Dr. Senior went onto a long and distinguished medical career as the Chief of Pediatric Endocrine Metabolic Service at the now Tufts Medical Center in Boston, MA for 27 years after which he retired and became Professor Emeritus.

His contributions in the field of medicine are significant, and he is recognized worldwide for his scholarly activities.  His research interests, both clinical and basic, spanned a broad range of problems including kidney disease, lipodystrophy, Glycogen Storage Disease, Hypoglycemia, fetal Alcohol syndrome, and Senior-Loken syndrome for which his name is still used.

He was elected to many learned professional societies including the American Pediatric Society, the Endocrine Society, the Association of Glycogen Storage disease and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (London).  He served on the Board of Examiners of the American Board of Pediatrics for almost 20 years, and on the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Endocrinology since its inception.

Throughout his life Dr. Senior had a sharp and inquisitive mind.  A lover of the arts, sciences and culture, his interests spanned the spectrum from language studies to fly fishing, and fly tying, to global travel, tennis and enjoying and collecting African art.  But, most of all, Boris’s real happiness and joy was sharing the love and activities of his family.  For them, Boris was special and loving, a man who will be remembered as always ready with a smile, a helping hand, and a word of encouragement.  He will be greatly missed by all those who came to know and love him, but especially by Dorrit and his immediate family.

NEW BEDFORD- Rubye M. (Haffer) Finger of Dartmouth, died on April 16, 2012, at the age of 88. For over 60 years she was the wife of the late Louis D. Finger and the daughter of the late Louis R. Haffer and Mildred (Shrier) Haffer.

 Born in Boston, MA, she resided in the New Bedford-Dartmouth area for over 60 years. She graduated from Framingham State Teachers College. She started her career as a teacher in Newton and then In New Bedford.

 She was very active in many social and philanthropic organizations, including, Past President of the New Bedford League of Woman Voters, the Greater New Bedford Jewish Federation, Sisterhood of Tifereth Israel Synagogue, a retired member of St. Lukes’ Hospital Board of Directors, Present Board Member of New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home, Member of Dartmouth COA Wanders DCTV, Life Member of Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, one of the original organizers of the Greater New Bedford Regional Science Fair in the early 1960’s, first planner for Coastline Elderly Services New Bedford, MA, Past COA director in Rochester, MA. She was an avid tennis player and took up the game of golf at the age of 83.

Wolfe –James D. , of West Palm Beach, FL, formerly of Newton,  on April 15, 2012 at age 54, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  Jim was the beloved son of Phyllis A. Wolfe and the late George M. Wolfe.  In addition to his mother, Jim is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Jessica Wolfe and Tom Bloch of Wellesley, and his brother, Andy Wolfe of Atlanta, GA.  He was a devoted uncle to his two nieces, Alison Wolfe Bloch and Margot Wolfe Bloch of San Francisco, CA, and enjoyed wonderful times with his aunts, uncles and many cousins.  After graduating from Noble and Greenough and Carnegie-Mellon, Jim enjoyed a series of varied careers in banking, financial analysis, gemology and information technology spanning over 30 years.  Jim made friends wherever he went, and will always be remembered for his vast intellectual curiosity, his highly-developed sense of humor, and his concern for others, especially dogs.

Retired Navy Cdr. Richard “Dick” Longman, 81, formerly of Sandy Point Farms, Portsmouth, died Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Lasell House in Newton, MA.  He passed away peacefully with family present.  He was the husband of Mary C. Longman.

Born in Bell, CA on April 27, 1930, he was the son of Ralph and Alyce Longman. Cdr. Longman, a graduate of UCLA, served in the Navy for 26 years, retiring in 1979.  While serving on the Navy Harbor Defense Team in Yokosuka, Japan, he married Mary Ann Crocker on September 19, 1954.  He then was posted to the Naval Attaché in Rome, Italy. 

Cdr. Longman came to Newport in 1959 where he attended first as a student and later served on staff of the Naval War College.  He also served two tours of duty in Vietnam, the first as a harbor defense advisor based in Saigon, and subsequently as commanding officer of the destroyer, USS Stickell.

Other tours of duty at sea included postings to the USS Joseph P. Kennedy as the operations officer during the Cuban Missile Crisis.  The USS Kennedy took an active part in the blockade of Cuba stopping and boarding the freighter Marucla.  He also served as executive officer of the destroyer, USS Brownson.  Cdr. Longman’s shore tours included Dahlgren, VA, and Newport, RI.

Upon retiring from the Navy, Cdr. Longman worked for Hughes Aircraft and Raytheon working on various projects for the Ohio class “Trident” nuclear powered submarine.  He was a member and former president of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, and active with the Naval War College Foundation.

In addition to his wife Mary, he leaves two sons, Christopher J. Longman Esq. of Williston Park, NY, and Richard C. Longman Esq. of San Diego, CA; a daughter, Tracie L. Longman Esq. of Newton, MA; a brother, Robert Longman of Newport Beach, CA; and three grandsons and two granddaughters.

Predeceased by wives Gertrude Rotenberg Friedman and Harriett Friend Fingerman Friedman; brothers Samuel (Lillian), Dr. Gerald (Hannah), Dr. Isadore (Florence); sisters Sophie (Sol) Yarosh, Bertha (Rabbi David) Aronson, and Betty (Harry) Sweet. Survived by children: Sharon (Dr. Donald) Gordon of Broomall, PA, Dr. Rohn Friedman (Dr. Barbara Byse) of Newton, MA, and Dr. Jeffrey (Laura) Friedman of Newton, MA. Also, stepchildren: Orlene Fingerman of Marshfield, MA, Joel (Sheila) Fingerman of Oak Park, IL, Sally Fingerman of Golden Valley, and Raleigh (Bill) Wolpert of Minnetonka. Grandchildren: Jessica Gordon of Washington, DC, Jennifer Gordon of Los Angeles, Gabrielle Friedman of Chicago, and Daniel Friedman of Oberlin, Ohio; and many loving nieces and nephews. Born in Minneapolis on September 13, 1915 to Rabbi Samuel and Mary Friedman. A skilled athlete, he played on baseball and basketball teams for the Emanuel Cohen Center and later the Southside Neighborhood House. He was a forward on the North High basketball team that, in 1933, won City, Twin City, and Regional championships but lost the State finals to Red Wing by 3 points. He graduated from North High, where he served as Sports Editor of the weekly North High Polaris. From 1933-1939 he attended the University of Minnesota undergraduate and medical schools. He completed an internship in Minot, ND. When Hitler invaded Europe, he volunteered for the Army and served five years, reaching the rank of Captain. He was assigned to the 24th Evacuation Hospital during the war, participated in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day, and he was one of the first Americans to enter the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. After the war, he trained in ophthalmology in Boston and Cincinnati, and he completed a residency in Ophthalmology at Hine’s V.A. Hospital in Chicago in 1948. He then returned to Minneapolis where he established an ophthalmology practice in the Doctor’s Building. He was one of the founders of Mount Sinai Hospital, where he later served as President of the Medical Staff. He served as President of the Minneapolis Eye Society, President of the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, Vice-President of the Vision Foundation at the University of Minnesota, Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota, and sponsor of the Friedman Resident Research Award in Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota. In 2002 he was awarded the George T. Tani, MD Humanitarian Award by the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology. He was a lifelong fan and season ticket holder for the University of Minnesota basketball and football teams. He was an enthusiastic golfer and a member of Oak Ridge Country Club, where he achieved a hole in one at age 85. . SALLY ANN DRACHMAN-.  died peacefully at home in Auburndale, Mass. Formerly of Scarsdale and Mamaroneck, NY, she was born in New York City on December 15, 1920 to Solomon S. and Helen Goldsmith Rudolph.  She was a graduate of the Fieldston School and Cornell University.  She was the beloved wife of the late Dr. Stanley R. Drachman and the late Charles Brand; loving mother of Virginia of Newton, Mass., Susan of Saratoga Springs, NY, Josh, of Seattle, Wash., and Dori of Peterborough, NH; grandmother of Wendy and Andrew Van Raalte, and Abigail and Eliza Drachman-Jones.  She was the sister of the late Alan G. Rudolph of Clinton Corners, NY, and niece of the late Reuben, Isaac, and Benjamin Goldsmith of Goldsmith Brothers Stationers, New York City.  She was an avid reader, an adventurous traveler, and an eternal optimist. Rhoda E.Clarke, 92, of Waban and Chestnut Hill passed away this morning at 9:35 after an extended illness as a resident of Newbridge on the Charles (Hebrew Senior Life) in Dedham. A third-generation member of Congregation Mishkan Tefila, she was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Joel L. Clarke. She is survived by her two children, Gerald & Patricia Clarke of Dover and Bobbi Clarke & Allen Michel of Weston, and by her six grandchildren, Paul & Tammy Clarke, Matthew Clarke, Joseph Clarke, Aaron Michel, Elizabeth Clarke, and Alexandra Michel.  She also is survived by four great-grandchildren: Samuel, Zachary, Rachel, and Jacob. Rhoda was formerly a member of Blue Hill Country Club and Boca Woods (Boca Raton) Country Club.
