Frances Rubin (nee Filler)

December 17, 2017

formerly of Randolph, on December 17, 2017, age 101, survived by her daughter Trudy Rubin and daughter-in-law Syrl Silberman, mother of the late Saul Rubin, beloved wife of the late Theodore Rubin.  Daughter of immigrants, helped put her brothers through college, worked as a bookkeeper until 72, always dreamed of furthering her education and finally graduated from UMass Boston at 75 years of age with a degree in gerontology. Loved gardening and identifying new birds, and never stopped singing until her final days. Services at Agudath Israel Cemetery, 776  Baker St., West Roxbury, Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 11:00 am. Ruth (Chafetz) Miller

Ruth Miller-of Wayland,on December 16, at the age of 85. Wife of the late Joseph Miller. Survived by her four children, Steven Miller, Barry Miller, Sharon Haims (Allan), Mark Miller (Melissa); 5 grandchildren, Eli and Rachel Haims, Max, Evan and Samantha Miller: brother Irwin Chafetz (Roberta), sister-in-law Carolyn Miller and her late husband Marvin, sister-in-law Gerri Motel and her late husband Paul, loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.Funeral services on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Wilson Chapel at Hebrew College, 234 Herrick Road, Newton. Interment will follow at Independent Pride of Boston Cemetery, 776 Baker St., West Roxbury. Shiva will begin Tuesday, immediately following the burial until 8:00 p.m. at The Hills at Mainstone Clubhouse, 133 Hillside Drive, Wayland and will continue at her late residence on Wednesday and Thursday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chabad of Lexington, 9 Burlington Street, Lexington, MA. 02173 and NewBridge on the Charles, 7000 Great Meadow Road, Dedham, MA 02026.

Margaret Winer Sherin

Margaret Winer Sherin passed away on December 16, 2017 at age 71. Growing up in Newton, MA, she was the daughter of the late Irving Winer and Ruth Winer Gottlieb, the step-daughter of the late Attorney Joseph Gottlieb, the sister of Donald Winer of Sewall’s Point, FL who shared mutual idolization and love, and the sister-in-law of Maxine Winer. A long-time resident of Back Bay, Boston and Chatham, MA, she was the loving wife of Peter Sherin, and mother of her beloved son David. She leaves many devoted friends and family members. After a decades-long career as a psychiatric social worker, she turned to film screen writing, earning the interest of major cable producers and film directors and the respect of other writers. Often traveling internationally with her family, she found people and places around the world an inspiration for her work. The funeral will be for immediate family and her close friends. Yehuda Golahny

Yehuda Golahny was born October 18, 1922, in Balvi, Latvia. In 1935, he and most of his immediate family went to Palestine. He emigrated to the United States in 1947, and became a naturalized citizen in 1955.

In 1949 he married Berta Rosenbaum (1925-2005), an art student at the University of Iowa, 1948-1950; they met at a Detroit school where he taught Hebrew and she taught art. They settled in Newton, Massachusetts in 1954.

As an electrical engineer, he had an illustrious career. He attended the American University in Beirut, 1945-47, and then Lawrence Institute of Technology, Detroit, Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, 1951. In the summer of 1950, he attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he would earn the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1954. Working at  Raytheon Airborne Equipment Operation Division, ITEK Corporation, Mithras Incorporated, and  other companies, he specialized in radar and circuitry.   In 1964 he joined the Instrumentation Group of the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory at MIT, from which he retired in 1987. He designed instrumentation for Lake Shore Cryotronics and for his own company IRICO. He was a lifetime member of IEEE, and served in the organization in several capacities. He served as a consultant for a number of companies, including BTU Engineering Corporation, Harvard Apparatus Company, and MIT. He taught occasionally at Boston University and MIT.

He has been credited with a number of patents and publications in the fields of solid state circuitry, precision measurement and control of temperature, automatic speed control, and nuclear, medical and ultrasonic instrumentation.

In his spare time he designed consumer products: the remote-control WhistleSwitch and LED-based jewelry.

He embraced New England, vacationing in the Berkshires, Nantucket, Maine, and Cape Cod. With Berta, he travelled often to Europe and Israel. He was an alumni donor to MIT, and a donor to the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, where Berta taught for many years.

Surviving are his son Fred Ron Golahny, daughter Amy Golahny and son-in-law Richard Kopley, grandson Gabriel Kopley, granddaughter Emily Kopley, her husband Raphael Godefroy, two great-grandchildren, and extended family.

Lynette L. (Kaufman) Brown

Lynette Brown, age 95, of Chestnut Hill, on December 9, 2017. Cherished wife and soulmate of the late Morton Brown.

Devoted mother of Alan and Sari, Peter and Betsy. Cherished grandmother of Andrew Brown,Jordan Brown, Marissa and Eric Yohay, Harley and Adrienne Brown. Great grandmother of Axel Brown.

Lynette is survived by her brother Bill Kaufman and his wife Lois, and her many nieces and nephews.

Dear sister of the late Nathan, Max, Roslyn and Freda.

Lynette was a Navy Veteran. She had a wide circle of friends and enjoyed spending time with them.

She was a long time employee of Filenes. Lynette will be greatly missed and be in our hearts forever.

Charlotte Lebowitz

Charlotte Lily Meyersohn Lebowitz – died Friday, December 8, 2017 at Metrowest Medical Center.

Charlotte was born in Schwerin, Germany, the oldest of three children of Franz and Magda (Wellisch) Meyersohn.   The family emigrated from Europe and settled in Worcester, MA, where her father was a physician and her mother a piano teacher.  Following high school, Charlotte went to Pembroke College at Brown University, where she sang in an a capella group, and from which she earned her Bachelors degree.  She was particularly proud of continuing on to complete her masters in the graduate school at Simmons School of Social Work, and worked as a licensed social worker in several settings including the Framingham Youth Guidance Center, the Brandon School, and eventually as school social worker with the Natick Public Schools.  She was a good skier (though a nervous lift user) and tennis player, and an avid traveler, visiting family in Switzerland, friends in the Caribbean and New Hampshire.   She married Marshall Lebowitz, and together they moved to Natick in 1949.  They both became active in town, in activities as varied as Temple Israel, schools issues, and swimming areas; and she supported actively a number of arts programs.

She is survived by her younger brothers Rolf Meyersohn (Marylea) of NYC and Peter Meyersohn (Annette Needle) of Chestnut Hill, nieces Elizabeth Meyersohn and Molly Jean-Mary, nephews Jonathan Meyersohn (Julie Hartenstein) of NYC and Matthew (Nina) Meyersohn of Cambridge and their children.  She was “Omi” to grandchildren Dov and Max Lebowitz-Nowak of Brooklyn and NYC, respectively and by Adam, Noah and Hannah Lebowitz-Lockard, of LA, Athens GA and Philadelphia, respectively.  She is also survived by her daughter Wendy (Joel Nowak) of Brooklyn.  She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Marshall, and by her adored children Marian “Katy” (David Lockard) and Mark. She cherished cousins and friends, all over the country and in Europe, and neighbors nearby.

Services will be held at Temple Israel of Natick, 145 Hartford Street, Natick at 10 am on Monday, December 11,2017, with interment to follow at the Framingham-Natick Jewish Cemetery. Shiva will be observed immediately following interment at the Temple till 5:30PM and 7-9pm.  The family will also sit shiva in Brooklyn later in the week.  Donations in Charlotte’s memory may be made to the Morse Institute Library, the Mark Lebowitz Prize at Natick High School, or checks payable to Dartmouth College and sent to the Dartmouth Development Office, HB 6066, Hanover, NH 03755 to either of these funds – “The Mark Lebowitz Prize” at the Hopkins Center, or “the Katy Lebowitz 1976 Academic Enrichment Fund.”

Arnold Marcus

On December 5, 2017. Born June 18, 1924 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, son of the late Dora and Barney Marcus and brother of the late George Marcus, Arnold lived most of his life in Holbrook, MA and then Braintree, Massachusetts,Delray Beach, FL and North Easton, MA with his stunning wife and former Miss AZA Enid Marcus, to whom he was married to for 67 years, yes 67 years. Arnold was a life and disability specialist and Certified Life Underwriter of Marcus Insurance Agency in Chestnut Hill for many years.
A professional singer who did charity events for the Hebrew Home for the Aged and sang the National Anthem at Boston Celtics games under the stage name Mr. Shalom. He was an avid tennis player and housed Trish Bostrom of the Virginia Slims Tournament and then the Boston Lobsters and gave tennis lessons to special needs students in Florida. Arnold, who outlived his immediate family by decades, was talking about cholesterol and had skim milk, margarine and other Health foods in the early 1960’s long before most people knew what cholesterol was. He once served his children horse meat because of its low fat without telling them which was a mistake never repeated. Arnold and Enid were part of the original group in 1967 who helped to create an Ileitis and Colitis Foundation (now the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation-New England Chapter). Arnold was sharp and did crossword puzzles in ink. Arnold loved clothing and was active in fitness and strict on his dietary intake in order to live a remarkable 93 years staying current on current events throughout. Although very quiet of his military service in the Navy during World War II of the Sea of Japan, it became very important to him culminating in a award for outstanding military service presented by Congressman Joe Kennedy 6 months ago and concluded by a 45 minute interview by Congressman Kennedy about his Navy service which was videotaped and on file at the National Archives.
Arnold leaves Enid of North Easton, his daughter, Harriett June Ykasala of Stoughton , Eric Stanley Marcus and his wife Eileen of Northboro, MA, Stephen Marcus  and his wife Carol Augustyniak of North Easton, grandson Gregg Ykasala of Northboro and his wife Melissa, and great grandchild Josh. Jenna Marcus of Boston and Brad Marcus of New York City and Alexandra Marcus of Oakland and Jake Marcus of North Easton and Miami, FL. While a wonderful father and grandfather who loved unconditionally, he kissed us every time he saw us. Arnold will be remembered by his family as a loveable father, husband and grandfather.
