age 85, of Westwood, on August 24, 2013. Beloved daughter of the late Saul and Emma (Davis) Kaplan. Devoted sister of Joanne Stratton-Mamber of Chestnut Hill. Loving aunt of Ann C. Stratton of Franklin and Laura S. and Arthur P. Gavrilles of Wrentham and great aunt of Emma J. and Christina A. Gavrilles.  Also survived by many loving cousins and her friend Joyce Williams.

Funeral service on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at 12:00 Noon at Walnut Hills Cemetery, 96 Grove St. Brookline, MA. Memorial observance will be held at the home of Joanne Stratton-Mamber on Thursday after the service until 8:00 PM and on Friday from 2-4 PM.

Devoted mother of Kenneth Porter and his wife Barbara, Carol Porter and her husband Stuart Ulrich, & Deborah Zimon and her husband Douglas. Dear grandmother of Katie Lynn, Shira Dannielle, & Rachel Deena Porter, and Alana Mia Zimon. Loving sister of Faye Glichouse, Gloria Cooley, and the late Elaine Brodsky. Services at Temple Israel (125 Pond St., Sharon, MA), on Monday, August 26, 2013 at 12 noon. Following interment at Temple Emanuel Memorial Park (490 North St., Randolph), memorial observance will be at Marilyn’s late residence 4-8 pm, and will continue Tues & Wed 3-8 pm. Frederick Bailen

August 22, 2013

Bailen–Frederick S., of Needham, 55 years old. Son of the late Geraldine and Marshall J. Bailen. Brother of Mitchell from Boston, and Steven and his wife Debra of Millis. Uncle to Cameron, Courtney and Sydney. He was the nephew of Donald and Sheila Grossman and Barbara Chaiton. Fred was a graduate of Needham High School and Suffolk University. He was a computer programmer/operator technician at GTE, then employee at Staples. He enjoyed writing, skiing, walking and traveling. He was a life long member of  Temple Beth Shalom in Needham, where services were held on Monday August 26, 2013 at 10:00 am. Burial took place in Puritan Cemetery, Baker St., West Roxbury. Memorial observance will be held at the Temple Monday 6-8 pm. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Doris (Rose) Hopengarten

age 94, passed away on August 19, 2013. She was a long-time resident of Newton, Massachu­setts who served as a school psychologist in the Needham Public Schools for eleven years. Her husband, Sol Hopengarten, DDS, passed away in April, 2003. Dear sister of the late Phyllis (Rose) Baskin and Richard Rose. Mother of Fred Hopengarten, Esq., and his wife, Betty Herr, MD of Lincoln, Massachusetts, and Prof. Jane Moss and her husband, Prof. Richard Moss of Pinehurst, North Carolina. Beloved grandmother of David Moss of Washington, DC, Annie Hopengarten, also of Washing­ton, DC, and Steven Hopengar­ten of Somerville, Massachu­setts. The family thanks Doris’ friend Ruth Harcovitz, of Need­ham, for her loyal friendship, and the staff of Cabot Park Vil­lage for their special care dur­ing her residence there.

Ser­vices will be held at Beit Olam Cemetery, 60 Old Sudbury Rd, Wayland, Massachusetts on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 11:00 am. Memorial obser­vance will be held at the home of Fred Hopengarten and Betty Herr on Wednesday and Thurs­day evening after 6:00 pm.

Mildred (Freshman) Zerinsky, 94, of Winchendon, died on Monday, August 19th at Maryann Morse Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Natick. Her husband of 51 years, Robert Zerinsky died 6 months ago on February 19, 2013. She leaves nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was a member of Congregation Agudat Achim in Leominster. She was born in Malden and was a daughter of Abraham and Rebecca (Rosenthal) Freshman and had lived in Winchendon for 51 years. GRAVESIDE FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 1PM ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21ST IN AGUDAS ACHIM CEMETERY ON ROLLSTONE RD. IN FITCHBURG UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF BREZNIAK RODMAN CHAPELS OF NEWTON. Immediately following the interment service, there will be a reception at a location to be announced. “Goody” (Goldstein) Melhado WORCESTER- “Goody” (Goldstein) Melhado, 87, of 475 Chandler St. died on Monday, August 12th in Phoenix, Arizona after an illness. Her husband of many years, Leon Melhado, died in 1994. She leaves a son, Marc Goldstein and his wife Debbie of Phoenix and a granddaughter, Aliya Melhado of Phoenix. She was predeceased by her son David S. Melhado in 2010 and by her brother, Maxwell Goldstein and her two sisters, Anne Jonas and Irene Rosenfield. She was born in Worcester and was a daughter of Morris and Bessie (Rudman) Goldstein and lived here all her life before moving to be in Phoenix this year. She was the office manager of Harding Glass Co. for many years. She was a member of Temple Emanuel and its Sisterhood. Michael Katz
WORCESTER – Michael Katz, age 102, died on Friday, August 16,2013 at the Jewish Healthcare Center.
His wife of 73 years, Tillie (Sack) Katz died in 2010. He leaves a daughter, Ruth Berman, wife of the late Mike Berman of Worcester; a son, Jerome Katz and his wife Danuta of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; and grandchildren, Debra Berman Shear, wife of Mark Shear of Worcester, Rena Berman Bly and her husband Douglas Bly of Holden and Dr. Tammy Katz and her husband Dr. Rahul Bhat of Washington, D.C., and his great-grandchildren, Erica and Alyssa Shear, Jocelyn and Courtney Bly and Arjun and Rohan Bhat; a brother Louis Katz and his wife Minna of Baltimore and a sister, Ethel, wife of Murray Abramoff of Worcester. He was predeceased by his brothers, Philip, Israel, Harry, Martin and Benjamin Katz and by his sisters, Sarah Joseph Pulda and Gertrude Chaifetz.
He was born in Nashua, NH, son of the late Morris and Fannie (Gilbert) Katz and lived in Worcester for 55 years, then 30 years in Margate, FL, returning to Worcester in 2008 to live in Eisenberg Assisted Living.
During WWII, he was the plant manager of Robbins Machine Co., manufacturers of machine tools and component parts for radar assemblies. After the war he was a department manager of Worcester Knitting Co.
He graduated Durfee Technical Institute of Fall River as a mechanical engineer. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and received a certificate of engineering. Before the war he was employed at Worcester Knitting Co. and returned to that company after the war.
He was an avid golfer, a great Red Sox fan and was an author at Eisenberg Assisted Living in Lucia Knowles Writer’s Workshop.
He was a Past President of Worcester Central Toastmasters. He was one of the earliest winners of the Worcester Telegram’s Hole-In-One Contest.
For 18 years he was President of the condominium board in Holiday Springs, FL. He was Past President of its Mens Club. He formerly was a member of Beth Israel Synagogue and Temple Beth Am in Coral Springs, FL.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 2pm ON MONDAY, AUGUST 19, IN TEMPLE EMANUEL SINAI,  661 SALISBURY ST. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF BREZNIAK RODMAN CHAPELS OF NEWTON. Burial will be in Worcester Hebrew Cemetery in Auburn. Following interment, memorial observance will be held Monday afternoon, August 19, at Temple Emanuel Sinai, 661 Salisbury St. and 7 -9pm at the residence of Ruth Berman, 80 Tarrytown Lane and will continue 1- 3pm & 7- 9pm at Ruth’s residence on Tuesday, August 20.
The family wishes to thank the staffs at Eisenberg Assisted Living and the Jewish Healthcare Center for their kindness, friendship and excellent care.
