Martha (McDowell) Urban

Urban, Martha M. (McDowell)
87, of Lasell Village, Newton, passed away Feb. 10 after a brief period of declining health. Born May 21, 1925 to Roy and Myrtle McDowell in Sharon, PA, she attended Sharon public schools and graduated with a Bachelor’s fromNorthwestern University‘s Medill School of Journalism. In 1947 she married Alfred J. Urban of Dorchester, MA and they moved to the Chicago area to raise their family in Winnetka, IL. In retirement, she and Fred lived in Evanston, IL and Starlake, WI before relocating to the Boston area. Fred died in 1999 and Martha moved into Lasell Village in 2000 as one of its original members. She will be greatly missed by her children, Guy and wife Charlyn Bethell of Watertown, MA, Jane and husband Mark Dannenhauer of Shutesbury, MA, and John of Evanston, IL, as well as her beloved grandchildren, Cody and Amy Urban and Rafer Dannenhauer. Besides Fred, she was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, William and Harold. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and nephews, as well as her sister-in-law, Frances Van Kleeck. At the time of her death, she was a member of First Parish Unitarian Universalist of Watertown, and before that she and Fred were members of UU fellowships in Winnetka, IL and Woodruff, WI. No matter where she lived, she was active in local peace and environmental groups, the Democratic Party, the League of Women Voters and other civic groups. As an editor, she was a founding member of the Assoc. of Women in Communications and had her own consulting business, Urban Editorial Services. She loved walking in the Wisconsin north woods and swimming in their lake, attending classical music concerts, especially when Guy and Charlyn performed, and she loved her new life at Lasell Village where she was very active in cultural and social events and groups. A celebration of her life will happen in the spring at the First Parish UU of Watertown. Memorial donations can be made to restore First Parish’s piano with a check to First Parish with “piano restoration fund” in the memo line, 35 Church St., Watertown, MA or to Thornton & Naumes/48 Francis St. Housing Fund at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, 116 Huntington Ave., 5th Fl., Boston, MA 02116, as part of the International Mesothelioma Program, or to a charity of your choosing.

Goldstein-Anne (Kahn), of Dedham, formerly of Revere, on February 22, 2013. Beloved wife of the late Jacob Leo Goldstein. Devoted mother of Jeffrey Goldstein and his wife Joan of Randolph, Barry Goldstein and his wife Kathy of Newton, and Deb Goldstein and her partner Julie Levesque of Newton. Dear grandmother of Sandra and Shay Cooper, Ben Goldstein and Wendy Bellah. Proud great grandmother of Maytal, Lia, Daniel, Haley and Eva. Following interment at Lord Rothchild cemetery (Baker St., W. Roxbury), Shiva will be at the home of Jeff and Joni Goldstein, until 8 pm and will continue Tuesday from 4-8 pm. Beloved brother of Abraham Newman, and loving uncle and brother-in-law to the Mackler, Powell, Taylor, Kovey, and Newman families. Peter Vilas Hanks

Peter Vilas Hanks, age 72, of Lexington, MA died Saturday February 16 at Beth Israel Hospital after a long illness. Peter was born in Urbana, Illinois on May 21,1940. He graduated from the Cambridge School of Weston and continued on to receive a Masters Degree from Johns Hopkins University. Peter was married to Stephanie on December 18, 1965; they were married 48 years. Pete worked as an electrical engineer for Draper Labs most of his adult life. He enjoyed windsurfing, scuba diving, physical fitness. He was a Vietnam War veteran. He was decorated with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Peter is survived by his wife, Stephanie, his daughter Rachel Hanks German, her husband Chris and his two grandsons Michael and David German. He is also survived by his mother Jane Hanks, his brother Nick, and his two nieces Jennifer Hanks-Allaire, and Charlotte Hanks-Andrews. Peter is preceded in death by his brother Tobias R.Hanks and his father, Lucien M. Hanks Jr. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Lawrence S. Student, 84, of 30 Parker Rd., Leominster, died on Thursday, Feb. 14th. His wife of 49 years, Shirley (Rubin) Student, died in 2001. He leaves a son, Michael J. Student and his wife Barbara of Scarsdale, NY; a daughter, Toby, wife of Michael Schindler of Fitchburg; and a grandson, Sanford Student. He was born in Fitchburg, the son of Hyman and Esther (Orlov) Student and  lived in Fitchburg and Leominster his entire life. With his father, he owned and operated Student Bros. Family Shoe Stores in Fitchburg, Gardner and Leominster. With his wife, he co-authored “Beginning Bonsai, The Gentle Art of Miniature Tree Growing.” He graduated Fitchburg High School and Nichols College. He was a member of Rotary, Tower Hill Botanical Gardens, Congregation Agudat Achim of Leominster, was a Past President of Fitchburg Jewish Community Center and  a trustee of Camp Split Rock and the Northeast Bonsai Association. He was an Airforce Veteran of the Korean War. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 17 th  AT 10 AM AT CONGREGATION AGUDAT ACHIM, 268 WASHINGTON ST., LEOMINSTER, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN OF BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME OF NEWTON. Burial will be in Agudas Achim Cemetery in Fitchburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Health Alliance Home Health Hospice, 25 Tucker Drive, Leominster, MA 01453. Memorial Observance will be announced at the time of the funeral.
