Stanley Brown

January 28, 2013

Stanley BrownBrown-Stanley, age 93 of Chestnut Hill,on January 28, 2013 .Beloved husband of 70 years of Adele (Shapiro) Brown and father of Lynn Kargman of Cambridge, Donna Safran and Hillary Brown, both of Newton.  Father-in-law of William Kargman, Charles Safran, M.D., Michael Grill.  Beloved grandfather of Rachel Safran, Julie Safran, Kati and Kim Kargman and Jeremy and Joanna Grill.  Son of the late Esther and Jack Brown of Brookline. Dear brother of Lilian Prusan of Henderson, Nevada and the late Ruth Miller.  He leaves many nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of Brookline, Stanley graduated from Brookline High School in 1936, where he played the saxophone and sang in his own swing band, in addition to running his own sweet shop.  He graduated from Harvard College in 1941 where he led Harvard’s top swing band for four years in a row, winning the coveted distinction of being named “Stan Brown’s Harvard Gold Coast Orchestra” each year.  The band played professionally and was heard on the radio three nights a week.  Bennie Goodman said Stan’s band was the “best college band in America” and invited the Stan Brown’s Gold Coast Orchestra to play on his radio show.  While at Harvard, Stanley also rowed crew, played polo, and taught US History.

From 1941-1946 Stanley served as an officer in the Army, ending his tenure as Major. He was awarded a Legion of Merit for having created a test, on his own initiative, which he administered to 7,000 Nazi Prisoners of War to determine their political attitudes.  This test was recommended to all Service Commands from that point forward.

After his Army service, he went from developing pre-fabricated homes to sales manager for the beverage Moxie. He then developed and named the coffee syrup, Coffee Time, which he marketed with his dear friend, Rudy Vallee. In 1954, he was hired as manager of The Sherry Biltmore Hotel, the first new hotel to open in Boston since WWII.  He went on to become the manager and owner for 11 years of the Johnson’s Hummock’s Restaurant in Providence, RI, a 1,200 seat seafood restaurant which was the largest in New England. He then worked in real estate finance before buying Sands Memorials in Cambridge, at the time New England’s largest monument dealer and exclusive dealer in rose quartz boulders.  While operating Sands, he purchased and operated several hotels and motels.  After 11 years, he sold Sands Memorials to work exclusively in condominium and retail development.  Before retiring, he developed a popular retail center in Plymouth, across from the Mayflower and next to one of his hotels.

Stanley was President of Cambridge Rotary in the 1970s and was honored with a Paul Harris Fellowship. As a life-long member of Temple Ohabei Shalom, he served as President of the temple in the early 1970s.  He was on the Temple Board of Trustees for many years, after serving as the President of the Temple Brotherhood in 1963, which at that time was the largest Brotherhood in the US.  He was President of the B’Nai Brith Realty Lodge in Massachusetts, The Providence, RI Executives Club and The Rhode Island Restaurant Association.  He was also Vice President of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, Commander of the Zelermeyer Jewish War Veterans Post and was a Mason for over sixty years.

In his spare time, he wrote music and plays, painted, was an avid reader, sailed, wrote his autobiography and published a book for children on money and economics.  His family and friends will miss his dynamic personality, optimism and energy. Services at Temple Ohabei Shalom (1187 Beacon St., Brookline), on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 11:00 am. Following interment at Crawford St. cemetery, (Baker St., W.
