Robert Chandler

Robert Chandler  ,age 66, of Delray Beach,Fl formerly of Wayland, Wellesley and Newton, on July14, 2012,after a long battle with Mylodysplastic Syndrome and Leukemia.Mr. Chandler leaves his cherished  and  devoted wife Christine, loving children Todd Chandler of Brooklyn, NY and Lauren Chandler of Portland, Oregon, step children Amy Fine and her husband JP Fine of Weston and Todd Tanger and his wife Barbara of Marblehead and 6 grandchildren. He is also survived by his 99 year old mother Miriam “ Mimi Chandler of Chestnut Hill. He was the son of the late Louis Chandler. he leaves his sisters Carol Chandler of Boston and Judith Chandler of Hawaii. His first wife Terry passed away in 1989.Before being forced to retire in June 2011 due to debilitating fatigue from his illness. Mr. Chandler was a senior partner in the Boston Law firm of Stoneman, Chandler and Miller specializing in labor, employment and school law. He was well respected in his practice and was befriended by his clients and adversaries alike during his 39 years with the firm. He had the rare distinction of arguing a case before the US Supreme Court when he was only 32 years old. Mr. Chandler will be remembered for his kindness, his sense of humor and the many friendships he established both in his law practice and his private life. Most of all he enjoyed trips to beautiful beaches such as Anquilla, Martha’s Vineyard, Maine, and Nantucket where he and his wife were married. He loved all kinds of music, and cherished being with his children and grandchildren who loved him dearly. Mr. Chandler was a 1968 graduate of Bowdoin College and a 1972 graduate of Boston University Law School. Services will be held at Temple Beth Elohim , 10 Bethel Rd. Wellesley (TODAY) Sunday July 15th , 2012 at 10:30 am. Following interment at Sharon Memorial Park, friends  and family will gather to celebrate his life at the home of Amy and JP Fine Sunday until 5:00 pm and Monday 6-9pm.In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to The Rose and Nathan Chandler Scholarship Fund at Bowdoin College or the Dr. David Steensma Research Fund at Dana Farber Cancer Institute ,450 Brookline Avenue , Boston, MA 02215.

Harvey Engle

Engle- Harvey Seymour of Natick passed away on July 9, 2012.Loving father of Elyssa Berg of Boca Raton, FL, Adam Engle of Natick and Stefanie Burdick and her husband Jerry of Spring Hill, TN. Zayde leaves his grandchildren Allyson and Austyn Berg, Dale and Michael Burdick as well as several nephews, a niece, grand nephews, grand nieces and many dear friends. Loving son of the late Alfred and Martha Engle. Dear brother of the late Selma Gilman and Myron Engle. Harvey was a life long  member of Temple Israel of Natick. He had a gift for writing and loved sharing his thoughts in wonderful poems which he wrote for many on all sorts of occasions. Services at Temple Israel, 145 Hartford St. Natick on Thursday July 12 at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Anshei Libavitz Cemetery, Woburn. Memorial observance will be announced at services. The family wishes to thank Harvey’s dearest friends for their support and those who have cared for or assisted him during recent years. Bette Grossman Jagodnik

Bette (Grossman) Jagodnik, 100, of Osterville, died on Monday, July 9th in the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Boston.
Her husband George W. Jagodnik died in 1991. She leaves two sons, Stuart Jagodnik and his wife Francine of Hampton Meadows, NH and Barry Jagodnik and his wife June of Brookline, MA and two grandchildren, Michael Jagodnik of Brookline and Britt L. Jagodnik of New York City. She was pre-deceased by her brother Shepard Crossman and by her sisters, Sally Landers and Ann Finn.
With her husband George, she owned and operated Stuart Barry Shoe Store in Fitchburg for many years.
She was born in Worcester and lived here for 72 years, moving to Osterville 28 years ago.
She had a wonderful marriage with her husband George. She had many close friends and neighbors. She was a wonderful cook. She celebrated her 100th birthday party and delivered a wonderful speech.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD AT 12:00 NOON on THURSDAY, JULY 12TH in TEMPLE EMANUEL, 280 MAY ST. WORCESTER  Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery in Worcester.
Memorial Observance will be announced at the time of the funeral.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice

Freeman-Dr. David L., of Newton, MA, on July 8, 2012. Beloved husband of Dr. Amanda B. Freeman. Devoted father of Joshua, Daniel and his wife Natalie, and Aaron Freeman. Proud grandfather of Gil Parker and Delia Freeman. Loving brother of Joanne Grossman and her husband Marvin, and Judith Freedman and her husband Merton. David was very active at the Social Action Committee at Temple Israel. An accomplished pianist, he played for many charitable causes including nursing homes, Lahey Clinic, and Boston Piano Amateurs Ascociation. He was a trusted and caring physician for many years. David and his beloved wife provided medical care to families needing assistance after natural disasters in Latin America. Services at Temple Shalom Newton MA, on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 12 Noon. Following interment, memorial observance will be at David and Amanda’s residence until 7pm and will continue Thursday and Friday 4-7 pm. Sarah D. Phillips

Sarah Dorothy Phillips, 94. Beloved aunt of Arthur and Mark Dublin, Jeffery Phillips, Karen Freed, Gail and Norman Phillips. Born 2-6-1918, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca of Boston; sister of Saul, Isadore and her twin, Janet Dublin. Sally was an independent, intellectual woman who loved to read and play bridge. In her youth, she was an actress with the Little Theatre Company, which produced plays highlighting social concerns. She served in WWII in the Women’s Army Corp. She was a valued and important employee of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president for many years. Graveside services at Sharon Memorial Park on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at 10:45 am. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Golda Meir House, 160 Stanton Ave., Newton, MA 02466.

Kellem, Bertrum N. of Newton, on July 5, 2012. Beloved husband of Fifi Swerling Kellem and the late Tobey (Goodman) Kellem. Devoted father of Jeffrey L. Kellem and the late Richard A. Kellem. Stepfather of the late Jimmy Swerling and his surviving wife Lisa and their children, Adam and Carly. Step grandfather of Bryan Holtzman. Loving brother of Lawrence Kellem and his wife Cynthia and the late Cynthia Adler. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Brother in law of Mimi Jacobs and Arlene Simons. Services at Congregation Mishkan Tefila, 300 Hammond Pond Parkway, Chestnut Hill, on Friday July 6 at 11:00 am. Following the burial in the Mishkan Tefila Memorial Park Cemetery, West Roxbury a memorial observance will be at the home of Jeffrey L. Gertrude Niman

Gertrude (Budish) Niman WORCESTER – Gertrude (Budish) Niman, 98, died on Friday, June 29th in the Jewish Healthcare Center. Her husband of 32 years, Arvey “Pinky” Niman died in 1978. She leaves her children, Nancy wife of Steven Epstein of Worcester and Paul Niman and his wife Debbie of West Newbury, MA; her grandchildren, Jill Epstein wife of Chris Higgins of Framingham, Matt Epstein and his wife Shauna of Boston, Joshua Niman and his wife Rebecca of Belmont, MA and Aaron Niman and his wife Upaasna of Washington, DC, and her great grandchildren, Olivia, Chase and Ayden. She was predeceased by her two sisters, Elizabeth Sawyer and Nahama Budish. She was known as “Giddy” and was born in Worcester on May 21, 1914, a daughter of Jacob and Rebecca (Freezon) Budish and was a lifelong resident, residing on Vassar St. for most of her life. She graduated from Classical High School and had attended Syracuse University and Boston University. She married Arvey “Pinky” Niman in 1946, while he was on leave from serving in the Army during World War II. She was an avid tennis player and golfer, who regularly won the Women’s Golf Championship at Mt. Pleasant Country Club in Boylston. She was a lifelong member of Temple Emanuel. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Gertrude’s family would like to thank the entire staff of the Jewish Healthcare Center, especially those associated with the fifth floor, for their kind and compassionate care of their mother. GRAVESIDE FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at 3 PM on MONDAY, JULY 2ND, in B’NAI BRITH CEMETERY on St. JOHN’S RD.. Harmona Geller

Geller, Harmona “Mona” (Jones), 91, of Auburndale and formerly of Brookline, on June 29, 2012. Wife of Louis, mother of Lynne and Gary. She was a resident at Lasell Village for the past six years, and would have been 92 on July 19th. Mona worked for many years  as a psychologist, having trained at the University of Toronto and Clark University in Worcester. She was a beautiful writer, an avid reader, and a lover of music. She had a great passion for horses and nature, which began in her early years growing up on a farm in Manitoba Canada. The funeral service and burial will be private, on Sunday July 1st at the Pride of Lynn Cemetery. Friends and relatives are kindly invited to Lou and Mona’s apartment at Lasell Village on Monday July 2 from 1-4pm.
