JUDGE ALVIN C. TAMKIN

Alvin C. Tamkin, formerly of Brookline, MA passed away peacefully in Needham, MA on August 10, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Boston, Judge Tamkin had a long and storied history in Massachusetts law and politics. A graduate of Dorchester High School, Boston University and Boston University Law School, where he served as an Editor of the Boston University Law Review, Judge Tamkin served as First Justice of the Trial Court of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Hingham Division, for three decades and presided in other courts around the Commonwealth including Newton, Quincy and Dedham and as a Judge on the Massachusetts District Court Appellate Division. A veteran of World War II, Judge Tamkin was elected to three terms to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing Dorchester’s Ward 14, and to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Governor’s Council. Appointed to the Bench in 1963 by Governor John Volpe, Judge Tamkin remained an active member of the Massachusetts Bar for 62 years until his formal retirement from the Bar last month. Judge Tamkin was a member of the Plymouth County, Boston and Massachusetts Bar Associations, a Past President of the Boston University Law School Alumni Association and a Past President of the America Jewish Congress. Judge Tamkin was awarded Boston University Law School’s Silver Shingle Award for Service to the Law School, and served on the Supreme Judicial Court’s Standing Advisory Committee on the Rules of Civil Procedure which drafted the Massachusetts Rules of Civil Procedure. Married and devoted to the late Jacqueline C. Tamkin for 43 years, Judge Tamkin was a devoted father and mentor to his two sons who both followed his path in the law. He was a loving and devoted grandfather to each of his 7 grandchildren whose success in school, sports and life was followed in great detail and with much pride. Judge Tamkin called his grandchildren the joys of his life. Judge Tamkin leaves his son Jonathan and his wife Cynthia Caporal Tamkin of Needham, MA and their children Andy, Ricky, Dylan and Jenny, his son Daniel and his wife Lucinda Cardinal of Manhasset, NY and their children, Emily, Elizabeth and Nicholas, and his brother Stanley of Chicago, Il. Funeral Services will be held at 10AM Thursday August 12, 2010 at Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Avenue, Needham MA, www.tbsneedham.org. Following interment, family and friends are invited to join the Tamkin family at Temple Beth Shalom from Noon to 4 PM.
