Lorraine Karofsky

KAROFSKY, Lorraine (Goldberg) 93, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, formerly of Newton and Wayland, MA on December 14. She joins her beloved husband Al, who died on September 3, 2011. Lorraine leaves her three sons and daughters-in-law, Lee and Linda Karofsky of Palm Beach, FL; Harvey and Gale Karofsky, of Palm Beach, FL; and Marc and Susan Karofsky of Wayland, MA. In addition, she leaves her grandchildren: Robin and Stephen Malasky, Eric and Kimberly Karofsky, Judd and Samantha Karofsky, Keri Glassman, Tracy and Matthew Shepard, and Lindsay and Dan Guttell, as well as her 10 great grandchildren: Hannah and Max Malasky, Matthew, Spencer, and Brooks Karofsky, Dylan, Ellie, and Alexandra Karofsky,Rex and Maizy Glassman. Lorraine was a lifetime member of Hadassah, a member of the Children’s Hospital League, and the Beth Israel Hospital Auxiliary, Boston, MA. She also volunteered her services as an aide to a nursing group during WWII. She was an avid golfer and a member of Pine Brook Country Club,Weston, MA for over 60 years. A graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, MA on Sunday, December 18, at 10:45 am. Immediately following the burial, memorial observance will be at the Clubhouse at the Hills at Mainstone, 133 Hillside Drive, Wayland until 4 PM. Newman-Edward of Dedham , formerly of Cambridge on December 15, 2011. Beloved husband of the late Miriam “Sis” (Koocher). Devoted father of Barry Newman and his wife Ronnie of Barrington, R.I. and Janice Lynne Press and her husband David of Medfield. Dear grandfather of Andrew Newman, Joshua Press and Jonathan Press and great grandfather of Elektra Newman. Loving brother of Ethel Goldberg of Dedham and the late Jack of Newton, Al of CA, and Ida Stone of Newton. Graveside services at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon on Friday, December 16 at 1:45 pm. Immediately following the service the family will return to the clubhouse at Newbridge on the Charles, Dedham until 5 pm and continuing at the Interfaith Chapel at Newbridge on Sunday from 2-4 pm. Dr. Raphael Zahler

Dr. Raphael Zahler-, a cardiologist and medical researcher who furthered understanding of heart physiology, died on December 13, 2011, in Glendora, CA.He was 66 .Born on June 14, 1945 to Benjamin and Emma Zahler. Dr. Zahler’s career spanned mathematics, computer science, cardiology, and medical research. In high school he was a finalist in the 1962 Westinghouse Science Talent Search and was flown to Washington D.C. to meet President John F. Kennedy. He received an AB from Harvard College, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and a PhD in mathematics from the University of Chicago. A pioneer in the field of algebraic topology, he was granted tenure in the mathematics department of Rutgers University at age 26. He later received an MD from Yale and was a medical resident at Boston City Hospital. Dr.Zahler went on to teach and practice cardiology at Yale University School of Medicine and Kaiser Permanente – Los Angeles. His medical research on molecular biology and the physiology of the heart was published in a variety of medical journals. Dr. Zahler was devoted to making the world a better place, from his political activity in the Civil Rights movement to his work as a cardiologist and public health educator. He was a crusader against cigarettes and wrote extensively on the detrimental effects of smoking. He was deeply involved in Jewish learning and community throughout his life. He also loved classical music, great works of literature and poetry, tennis and hiking.Above all, Dr. Zahler loved and cared deeply for his children and grandchildren. Dr. Zahler is survived by his children, Joanna (and Ramon) Herrera, Daniel Zahler, Elizabeth Zahler and Jacob Zahler; his grandchildren, Joshua, Lucas , and Nicolas Herrera and his sister Sue Wisner. Services will be held at Temple Beth Shalom, 670  Highland Ave., Needham on  Sunday  December  18, 2011 at  2:00 pm. Interment at Baker St. Cemetery, West Roxbury,MA.   Memorial observance will be at the home of Joanna and Ramon Herrera in Needham,MA on Tuesday, December 20 and Wednesday, December 21 from 4-7pm with Minyan services at 6:30 pm .In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to American Cancer Society 30  Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701. Ted Rubin

Ted Rubin, 94, was known throughout the South Shore – and twice honored by the state of Massachusetts – for his extensive volunteer work for elders, which he carried on until his mid 80s.In May 2001, when he was 84, he was awarded the Governor’s Points of Light Award  by Gov. Jane Swift – given to those “who demonstrate an uncommon dedication to service”.   In 1999, Rubin won the DOVE award – (Devoted Outstanding Volunteers to Elders), the highest prize Massachusetts bestows on volunteers who serve seniors.Rubin was one of the best known residents of Randolph, where he was President of the Randolph Council on Aging for five years. He was a town meeting member, helped found a free food pantry in Randolph, and headed the Friends of the Turner Public Library there, for which he organized an annual book drive. He collected used eyeglasses for the Lions Club, along with supplies for Randolph schools, and volunteered for 15 years for the Randolph council’s Meals on Wheels program. In addition, he wrote two biweekly newspaper columns on senior issues for local Randolph newspapers, and hosted the popular “Senior Focus” program on Randolph Cable TV that showcased issues of concern to older people.

 

Long a board member of South Shore Elder Services in Braintree, he also volunteered as community outreach coordinator for the American Association of Retired Persons in Massachusetts. Rubin started a volunteer speakers bureau for the AARP and spoke to chapters across the state on health insurance, HMOs, and Social Security, drawing on his long working experience as an insurance agent.In 1996, Rubin received the Edythe B.Donkin Award from South Shore Elder Services, and the community service award from the UMass Gerontology Institute alumni association.When he was asked by the Quincy Patriot Ledger in 1999 why he volunteered, Rubin responded, “I enjoy helping others.”  June Newman, the former director of the Randolph council – with whom he worked to set up the town’s first van service for seniors – told the Patriot Ledger: “When a Randolph elder needs a hand, Ted is there.”Rubin, who grew up in Dorchester, was a graduate of Boston Latin School and Boston University.  He is survived by his wife Frances, 95, of Quincy, along with son Saul Rubin and daughter-in-law Syrl Silberman of Arlington, and daughter Trudy Rubin and son-in-law Paul Hogan of Philadelphia.Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 12:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Am, 871 No. Main St., Randolph, MA. Janet Hodgson-White

Janet Hodgson-White, 71, died peacefully at her home in Waban on December 5, 2011, after a long illness. Janet was born in Boston on September 9, 1941. The only daughter of Robert and Katherine (Sprague) Hodgson, she was raised in Hingham, MA. A graduate of Hingham High School and Vassar College, she was a dedicated teacher in the Brookline Public School system for many years. At that time she was known as Janet Berman. In later years she and her husband, renowned child psychologist Burton L. White, founded and ran a program for parents called New Parents as Teachers. Janet was the beloved wife of Burton White for over 25 years and the devoted mother of the late Mark Berman. Her brother William Sprague Hodgson died in 2010. Janet will forever be remembered by her loving stepchildren, Laura and her husband Mark, Dan and his wife Sheryl, Emily and her husband Eric, and David, along with her seven grandchildren, Sam, Jenny, Anjolie, Melissa, Rachel, Matty and Rebecca, her niece Haidan Hodgson, and the many other friends and relatives who were blessed to know her. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, December 17, at 2PM at the Newton Cemetery Chapel (791 Walnut Street, Newton Center) and a gathering afterwards at the Newton Marriott Hotel (2345 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton) from 3:30 to 6PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet’s name to the Seasons Hospice Foundation (6400 Shafer Court, Suite 700, Rosemont, IL 60018) or the Mark H. Berman Endowed Scholarship Fund at Carleton College (One North College Street, Northfield, MN 55057).
