Irving H. Franklin

Irving H. Franklin, 93, Dies; Improved Batters’ Grip

By DOUGLAS MARTIN

New York Times  November  15, 2011

For many decades, almost no major league baseball players wore batting gloves. Partly because of Irving H. Franklin, almost all do today.

Irving Franklin.

Keep up with the latest news on The Times’s baseball blog.

Kevin Youkilis of the Red Sox wearing a Franklin batting glove in a 2008 playoff game.

He did not invent them. On Sept. 4, 1964, Ken Harrelson of the Kansas City Athletics was credited with starting the custom by wearing a golf glove to protect a blistered hand in a game against the Yankees. He hit two home runs.

But Mr. Franklin, who died at 93 on Thursday in Falmouth, Mass., was perhaps the father of the modern batting glove. He teamed with Mike Schmidt, the great Philadelphia Phillies third baseman, to design it and spread it through big-league clubhouses — and on to all levels of baseball.

Made by Franklin Sports, the company that Mr. Franklin and his brother, Sydney, started and led, the glove has been the official batting glove of Major League Baseball since the late 1980s. Miguel Cabrera, the major league batting champion in 2011, and Jose Batista, the home run leader, used Franklin gloves.

Batting gloves, like batting helmets, were a relatively late addition to the national pastime. Unlike the helmets, the gloves are not required. But players say they provide comfort, warmth, improved grip and shock absorption. They say gloves give them a more secure feeling about their grip, especially early in a swing.

Irving Franklin’s son, Larry, recalled Monday that his father was eager to get a top-flight player to endorse something his company made. He signed up Schmidt, who suggested batting gloves. They teamed up at spring training in 1983. Mr. Franklin contributed his knowledge of making sporting goods from leather; Schmidt gave a player’s view, as he continually criticized and tweaked designs.

Larry Franklin, who said his father died of complications of a stroke, said Schmidt then personally approached his fellow All-Stars to try the gloves, and 30 signed on. More than 150 big-league ballplayers now use the Schmidt-designed glove, which has changed little from the original design. The average player goes through eight dozen pairs of gloves a year.

Larry Franklin, now president of the company, said Major League Baseball called his father in 1988, by which time Franklin Sports had 80 percent of the batting glove market, and asked him to come to New York to talk. The baseball officials suggested making the Franklin glove the official one, as they had previously given official status to Wilson’s fielding glove, Rawlings’s baseball and Louisville Slugger’s bat.

Franklin Sports paid a fee for the designation, which has never lapsed. Players are also paid a small fee, in addition to getting free gloves. Some star players, like Barry Bonds and Cal Ripken, have been featured in advertisements and receive more money.

In 1998, the year he broke Roger Maris’s single-season home run record, Mark McGwire turned down $1 million to endorse all Nike’s products to stay with Franklin, which paid him $5,000 a year, The Washington Post reported.

Irving Harold Franklin was born on Aug. 2, 1918, in Brockton, Mass. He was first employed in a shoe factory, then followed his grandfather into the scrap leather business. He later took over the business and during the Korean War made things like trigger-finger mittens for the military. The company moved on to make footballs and other sports equipment, toys and sports medicine products.

In addition to his son, Mr. Franklin is survived by his wife, Barbara; his sister, Sylvia Aven; his daughter, Arlene Franklin; his stepsons, Kenneth L. Brayman and Jules Brayman; his stepdaughter, Lynne Brayman Buchong; and two grandsons.

Irving Franklin was particularly pleased about his batting gloves because the name of his company was so easy to see when television cameras closed in on a hitter. His other official major league products, cups and supporters, were not
