Koplan-Selma ( Davis) at age 96, of Canton formerly of Chestnut Hill,  Beloved wife of the late Herman Koplan. Devoted mother of Laurence Koplan and his wife Beverly, Lois Gibley and her husband Harry Dear grandmother of  Michelle  Eagle and her husband Mark, David Koplan and his wife Elizabeth, Neil Tockman and his wife Jennifer, Lee Tockman and his wife Leslie and Gail Tockman. Also survived by 9 great grandchildren. Loving sister of the late Natalie Bornstein, Dr. Albert Davis and Dr. Saul Davis. Also survived by loving nieces and nephews. Plotkin-Rosalyn (Bean), of Rockville, MD, on October 27, 2011.  Born and raised in Springfield and former resident of Orange for 52 years. Rosalyn was the Past President of the Athol-Orange Chapter of Hadassah. Wife of the late Norman Plotkin. Mother of Lanny (Cathy) Plotkin, Cheryl (Wayne) Lidsky and Jonathan (Stephanie Marks) Plotkin. Sister of Charles Bean and Selma (Bernie) Milstein. Grandmother of Elana, Talia and Zachary Plotkin, Andrew and Carrie Lidsky and Joshua and Leah Plotkin. Services will be held on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at 11:30 am at Beth Israel Synagogue, Jamesbury Drive, Worcester. Interment will be at the Holy Society Cemetery, Leicester. Shiva will be at the home of Jonathan Plotkin and Stephanie Marks in Ashland on Sunday until 9 pm and continuing Monday and Tuesday, 2-4, 7-9 pm. Daily minyan 9 am and 7:30 pm. Cherished great grandmother of Ava and Alana Gordon, Abby and Mitchell Gordon, and Xia and Kai Snyder. Loving sister to the late Benjamin, Sidney, and Wilbur Snyder. She was an active member of the Newton Jewish Community Center. Kind and caring, she was loved and cherished by many nieces and nephews, and all who knew her. Melvin “Mal” Goldston

GOLDSTON, Melvin “Mal” Age 97, of Newton, on October 17, 2011. He was founder and President of Mal’s Discount Department Stores with seven locations in Massachusetts. He began his career selling merchandise on the road throughout New England. He later opened Mal’s Bargain Centers in Needham, Norwood and Hyde Park and then became one of the first retailers to open discount department stores in New England. Mr. Goldston’s greatest achievement was as patriarch of a warm, loving family in which he instilled his values of love, loyalty and determination. He suffered many losses in his life. He will join his beloved wife of 40 years, the late Sylvia “Sibby” (Rubin) Goldston, his late daughter Sandra Goldston and late brother Lester Goldston. He was the devoted partner of Joyce Dovinos. Devoted father of Saralee Mulcahey and her husband Vincent, Barbara and Joseph Lane. Dear grandfather of Wendy and Gus Prince, Steven and Kristie Rosenberg, Michael Rosenberg, Gary and Craig Mulcahey, Stacy Klickstein, Stacey and Sean Nugent. Loving great grandchildren Cameron Connor and Lyrissa Hall, Brandon, Kayla and Kevin Rosenberg, Oscar and Eli Mulcahey. Devoted brother of Dr. Irving Goldston and his wife Cynthia. Ralph L. Kolodny

October 18, 2011

Ralph L. Kolodny, professor emeritus of Boston University School of Social Work, died at Norwood Hospital on October 18, 2011. Born and raised in Fall River, MA. He graduated from Durfee High School, Brown University, Columbia University (MA in Sociology) and Boston University (MSS in Social Work). He was a veteran of World War 2, serving in the Pacific. He was a member of the Z.O. A. and Temple Beth El in Quincy, and  an author of over 50 articles in Social Work Journals, many of which have been translated and appeared in foreign journals. He worked as a Director of Department of Neighborhood  clubs of Boston Childrens’ Services Association for many years, and taught social work at Boston College and Boston University. He established the School of Social Work at Ben Gurion University in Israel. He attended Hebrew College in Brookline for many years, becoming fluent in Hebrew, and was an ardent student of the language.

He leaves his wife, Vivian (Orodenker) Kolodny;  his children, Dr. Jonathan Kolodny of Dedham and Miriam Kolodny Ben Nun of Tel Aviv, Israel; his grandchildren, Aaron, Nathan, Lauren Kolodny and Sam Ben Nun; his brother Bently G. Kolodny of Ny.

Services at Temple Beth David, 7 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood on Friday, October 21 at 1:00 pm. Following the interment at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon  memorial observance will be at the home of Dr. Jonathan Kolodny in Dedham through 8 pm and memorial observance will continue on Sunday at his late residence in Quincy, 2-4, 6-8 pm. Remembrances may be made to a charity of your choice.
