Malcolm Berman of Braintree, a business executive and lover of life, died September 14, 2009 in Hingham. He was 79. He was born in Boston and raised in Dorchester. He was educated at English High School. Following graduation Mal went into the graphic-arts business and as a entrepreneur started Farnsworth Press in 1960 to be followed by many other businesses and ventures. He was one of the first Presidents of Temple Beth Am in Randolph and helped spearhead the fund raiser for Israel after the Six Day War. He was a member of the Moses Michael Hayes Masonic Lodge. Because of his efforts and contributions to Handi Kids, he was named man of the year. In 1965 he was elected to the young presidents association. Traveling was very important to him and Nantucket was his favorite spot. It was here he became an avid angler. Sports were one of his favorite past times. Over the last 15 years, Mal loved and lived life with his companion Susan Dupont. They were inseparable and even started a business together, casino escapes. Mr. Berman is survived by his brother Fredley Berman; his sons, Steven, Ernie, Billy, Michael and Andrew; his daughters Julie, Jennifer and Jeanna; his 18 grandchildren, relatives and many friends and his longtime companion and love of his life, Susan Dupont. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 17 at 10 am at Temple Beth Am, 871 North Main Street, Randolph. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon. HOLTZ, Selma Koss Of Newton, passed away September 9, 2009 at her home. She was 78. Noted appraiser and dealer in American Art, Mrs. Holtz was known for her passionate study of American artists working in the late 19th and 20th centuries and for her prescient eye collecting their works. Her work of this era was focused on showcasing the important contributions made by New England’s many great artists to the American Art movement in that period. Her research of American Art, which she began in the 1950s and pursued daily among her voluminous stacks of journals, catalogue raisonn’s, books, sales catalogues and reports, and clippings, was a passion which yielded an encyclopedic knowledge and made her a sought after resource for appraisals and provenances in the latter regard, sometimes to prove authenticity, or sometimes to frame a particular artwork in an interesting historical anecdote. Along the way, Selma Koss Holtz amassed an important collection of artworks with a strong bent toward her love for American Impressionist paintings. The Selma Koss Holtz collection includes works by famous New England artists who contributed significantly to the American art movement in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Important works in her collection, often loaned to area museums, included paintings by John Joseph Enneking, John Marin, N.C. Wyeth, William Bradford, Dennis Bunker, Lilla Cabot Perry, Charles Woodbury; bronzes by Augustus St. Gaudens, Jo Davidson, and Kahlil Gibran; and etchings by Howard Pyle and Rockwell Kent, among others. Mrs. Holtz was also a giving benefactor to regional museums donating to New. Selma Holtz was a graduate of Bates She was born and raised in Auburn, Maine, and she continued to visit and summer in Maine with her family who adopted her love for her home state. She was the daughter of the late Joseph Koss and Reba Barr Koss. She was the beloved mother of Jane Holtz and Herbert L. Holtz and his wife, the Honorable Nancy Staffier Holtz. She was the loving and proud grandmother of Hunter and Harry Holtz. Loving sister of Herbert and Edward Koss. and dear and wonderful inspiration to many friends and family. Friends and family are invited to gather at the Holtz home at 16 Cordis Street, Charlestown on Sunday, September 13 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. A memorial celebration of Selma’s life is to be held at a time and place to be announced.
