Notice – Guest Book – Flowers – Gift Shop – Charities Shwachman, Ida S. (Showstack) View/Sign Guest Book Ida S. Shwachman, 92, of Brookline died peacefully Wednesday, May 21, 2008. She is survived by three sons, Philip O. Shwachman and his wife Judith of Worcester, Edward J. Shwachman and his wife Nancy of Hingham and Albert J. Shwachman and his wife Cheryl of Cohasset; grandchildren, Mark, Matthew, Allison and Greta. She was predeceased by her loving husband of over fifty years, David J. Shwachman, and her siblings, Frank, Max and Evelyn Showstack and her granddaughter, Abbey J. Shwachman. She was born April 25, 1916 in Boston, the daughter of William and Mollie (Wiseblatt) Showstack. Ida graduated Girls Latin School, earned a BA from Radcliffe College in 1937 and a BS and an MS from Simmons College. She was a dedicated social worker and held positions at Boston Dispensary (NEMC), Staten Island Hospital, Hospital for Joint Diseases, NYC, and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. After her sons were in school, Ida returned to social work part time and later held positions at Beth Israel Hospital and retired as Director of Social Services at Huntington General Hospital in 1980. Throughout her long life Ida was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She and her husband David were avid Zionists and after retirement enjoyed many trips to Israel. Both were fluent in Hebrew and Yiddish and remained lifelong students. Idave as they often wrote, were active in many Jewish organizations, as well as local community affairs, enjoying leadership positions in these organizations. After retiring, Ida enjoyed spending more time with her family, being a member of several choral groups and volunteering for organizations she was involved with. She loved life and loved giving to others and will be sorely missed by family, friends, and loved ones. By Bryan Marquard Globe Staff / June 1, 2008 To help explain urban sprawl and smart growth – two terms he thought needed to be more sharply defined – Oliver Gillham took a soothing, long view and a bracing close-up look. more stories like this”From the air, the distinctions between residential, commercial, and industrial areas are easily understood while town, county, and state boundaries go unseen,” he wrote in the introduction to his book “The Limitless City,” published in 2002. “Once on the ground, things can look very different. Here, one can become lost in a world of seeming sameness, where streets, stores, and houses make up places that could be anywhere in the United States – in Houston, Atlanta, San Jose, or somewhere outside of Boston or Washington. Each place can seem a limitless city – a suburban continent stretching beyond the horizon.” Nearly as limitless was Mr. Gillham’s range as an architect and urban planner. From the Harvard Square MBTA Station to new towns in India, from the Big Dig to Birmingham, Ala., he had a hand in projects that were as varied aesthetically as they were distant geographically. Mr. Gillham, whose wife died eight months ago, took his life in Newton on May 12. He was 59 and had moved to Newtonville about two years ago so his wife could be closer to medical care. Hacker, William of Naples, FL, formerly of Wilton, CT and Brookline, MA on April 11, 2008. Bill was born in Roxbury in 1929. He attended the University of Miami and joined the Army, serving in Germany. He returned from service and finished his education at Boston University. He moved to Alberqurque where he met his wife Sheila. They came back East to start Camp Cedar, with his late brother Henry Hacker and the late Henry Lesser. Bill began his teaching and counseling career in Wilton, Norwalk and Westport, CT until his retirement in 1981. He continued to be active in the camping community, where he touched the lives of thousands of campers and counselors through the years. Bill is remembered by generations of friends, young and old, and by his devoted family, including his adoring wife and soulmate Sheila, his proud children Jeff and his wife Karen, Sue Hacker-Wolf and her husband Adam, and four adoring grandchildren, Samantha, Jesse, Molly and Maya. Balkan-Herman B. of West Roxbury, on March 30, 2009. Son of the late Sadie and Max Balkan. He was born in Dorchester, with his beloved twin sister, Celia Cohen who passed away at the age of 59. He was a graduate of Northeastern University. Herman was a loyal hard working family man. Beloved husband of Arleen (Charnitsky) of 50 years. He worked for Ratheon Corp. as an accountant for 35 years and part time at the Boston Globe. Over the years he was an avid numismatist and philatelist who was affiliated with many such organizations in the Boston area. He was a natural at languages and enjoyed speaking Spanish as well as public speaking for the Toastmasters Club. Besides his wife, Arleen he leaves his daughters, Janet Weinstein and her husband Glenn of Weston and Sharon Yogel and her husband David of Weston; his grandchildren, Robin, Gordon, Jodie Weinstein and Ross and Jenna Yogel.
