Hon. Jeffrey A. Abber

April 20, 2017

The Honorable Jeffrey A. Abber, 55, of Malden and West Yarmouth and formerly of Brockton, passed away in the loving arms of his family after living life to the absolute fullest and showing his family how to accept death with peace and dignity. Jeff was the beloved husband of Maureen (Duffy) and adored and much loved father of Annie M. of South Boston, Zachary S. of Melrose and Caitlin R. of Somerville.

Despite a cancer diagnosis over 2 years ago, Jeff continued to live  life as he always had with compassion, strength, empathy, the most amazing positive outlook and  sense of humor.  While undergoing treatment, Jeff continued to work, travel, and golf, cook gourmet meals, spend time with family and friends, enjoy Boston sports, tell comical stories, enjoy music and simply enjoy life.  As he often said, he was not sick; he simply had cancer.  Jeff loved so many and was loved by so many.   Once Jeff met you, you were a friend for life and there was absolutely nothing that he would not do for a friend.  His generosity and thoughtfulness knew no bounds.

Jeff grew up in Brockton, the devoted son of the late Herman and Charlotte (Baskin) Abber. He was a proud graduate of Brockton High School, Brandeis University and New England School of Law.   After graduating law school, Jeff married his high school sweetheart, Maureen with whom he shared 38 years of love and 30 years of marriage.  Jeff’s greatest joy was being a father to his triplets.   He provided Annie, Zach and Cait with their moral compass and their appreciation that family matters most.  He enjoyed coaching many of their sports team and served as a coach and mentor to many in the Malden Youth Sports program.  Jeff thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his children at their Cape house; traveling; having family dinners; watching their sporting and dancing activities; watching Boston sports teams, engaging in lively discussions and simply basking in the happiness of a father who loved his three.

For over 20 years Jeff maintained a law practice in Malden, The Law Office of Jeffrey A. Abber, focusing on probate and family law. The highlight of Jeff’s career was when he was appointed an Associate Justice of the Probate and Family Court for the Middlesex County by Governor Deval Patrick. As an Associate Justice, Jeff presided initially in the Essex Probate and Family Court in Salem and more recently in the Middlesex Probate and Family Court in Cambridge.   He served as a Judicial Mentor to new judges and served on the Education Committee for the Probate and Family Court where he developed and shaped judicial education programs for the entire bench.  Jeff also advanced and taught many continuing legal education programs for the Massachusetts Bar Association and MCLE.   Jeff’s judicial colleagues appreciated Jeff’s legal wisdom; compassion; humility; sense of grace; sense of humor; wit; and exuberance.  In 2015, Jeff was recognized with the Jurist of the Year Award by the Middlesex County Bar Association.  We are eternally grateful to all of his colleagues over the years who provided a tremendous community of support to Jeff and our family.

Jeff was a past member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, the Family and Probate Innes of Court, the Malden Redevelopment Authority Board of Directors, the Lions Club International and the Cape Cod Synagogue.

Jeff has left behind a legacy of love, family and friends will forever live on in the hearts of his wife, children and all who loved him.   Family meant everything to Jeff and there was nothing that he enjoyed more than spending time with his extended family.  In addition to his wife and children, Jeff is survived by his brother Russell, his sister and brother-in-law Carol and Jonathan Braverman, his brother and sister-in-law Scott and Kim and his sister-in-law Louise Duffy; his adoring nieces and nephews Allison and Jared Braverman and Brittany, Ben and Sophie Abber; his “second son”, Michael Sullivan; his “third daughter”, Jennifer DeLacey, whom he loved dearly; his beloved “little buddy” Rolo, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and colleagues.  In addition to his parents, Jeff was pre-deceased by his mother and father in-law James and Anne (Donovan) Duffy; his brother-in-law James Duffy; his close friend Jonathan Shostack and his loyal dog Rudi.

Our family will be forever grateful for the amazing and compassionate care that Jeff received at Mass General Hospital and would like to thank  Dr. Janet Murphy, Patricia Tammaro, NP,  Robyn Farrell, John Opolski, Dr. Jennifer Shin; the staff on Yawkey 7 and 8  and “Jeff’s nurses” on Lunder 10 and Lunder 9 for the love and support that they gave to Jeff and our family, especially Jen Venuti, Natalia DeMatteo, Christine Weiand and Christine Shaughnessy along with so many other amazing nurses whom Jeff loved.   Our lives are forever enriched by the friendship and compassion that you provided. We would also like to thank Diana Byomuhangi of Seasons Hospice for the care and compassion that she provided to all of us.

Services will be held at Temple Beth Avodah, 45 Puddingstone Lane, Newton Centre on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial observance will be held at the Abber residence in Malden on Sunday 6:30-8:30 p.m. and   Monday 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:30-8:30 p.m. and the Abber residence in West Yarmouth on Tuesday 3:00-7:00 p.m.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeff’s memory may be made to Jeff’s Justice League Team, http://profile.pmc.org/TJ0082, which is riding in Jeff’s honor in the Pan Mass Challenge to raise funds for cancer research.   Jeff was immensely proud of the team’s members: his daughters Annie and Caitlin, cousin Spencer and niece Brittany who are riding as superheroes to honor our Superman.

Attorney Saul Ostroff

April 15, 2017

Born June 2, 1946, Saul M. Ostroff of Natick lost his valiant battle with cancer on April 15, 2017. Saul was an incredibly strong man who, as an attorney, fought for his clients for over 40 years. When not in the courtroom, he could be found under the hood of a car in his driveway or repairing small engines in his workshop. Saul never met a machine or a tool he couldn’t find a use for, and may be the only lawyer in history who invited clients to his home for brake repairs.  Saul is survived by his wife of 44 years, Arlene (Seidberg) and his sons, David Phillip Ostroff and his wife Sara Jaffe of Arlington, VA, and Andrew Louis Ostroff of Brooklyn, NY. Saul was grandfather to two beautiful girls, Hannah Jaffe Ostroff and Nora Ruby Ostroff. He was a devoted son of the late Norman and Sarah Ostroff and loving brother of Judy Ostroff Litwak, and Helene Ostroff Faneuil and her husband Edward. Additionally, Saul is survived by many cousins, nieces, and nephews.  After graduating from Brookline High in 1964, Saul went on to graduate from Franklin Pierce University and The New England School of Law before joining his father’s law practice which he would eventually take over. Dr. Allen Goorin

April 14, 2017

Goorin, Allen, M.D.-70, of Jamaica Plain, formerly of Newton, MA and Pennsylvania, passed peacefully on April 14, 2017.  He was the beloved husband of Linda Goorin, father to Amy Fogelman and her husband Matthew, and to Laura Goorin and her fiancé Darren Critz; grandfather to Ella and Lily Fogelman and Regan Critz; brother-in-law to Roz Goorin; and relative and comrade to many more.

Family always came first for Allen.  He enjoyed nothing more than spending time with loved ones, telling stories, laughing, being on Martha’s Vineyard with Linda, and watching his granddaughters dance. But family was not his only passion.  Allen was a beloved pediatrician and pediatric oncologist to thousands of children, both healthy and sick. He was a general pediatrician at Longwood Pediatrics, where he treated babies to 20-somethings (and their parents) with his intelligence, compassion, and charm.  Allen also ran the Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) Program at The Dana Farber in Boston, caring for many children and teens with the disease over the course of his career. He was instrumental and a driving force in probably the most important Osteosarcoma study showing that adjuvant chemotherapy was effective in improving survival of Osteosarcoma patients. In the late 1970’s, the use of chemotherapy was in unchartered waters and the undertaking of a randomized study was controversial, yet necessary.  Allen’s courageous leadership helped it to happen. The results of that study have changed the treatment of this type of cancer forever and have saved countless lives.  The dramatic improvement in survival has really not been increased since.

Born in Beaver Falls, PA on April 18, 1946, Allen was the son of the late George and Ida Goorin, and  brother to the late  Stanley. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson in 1968, Pittsburgh Medical School in 1972, and did a pediatric internship in Philadelphia. He and Linda then spent two years in Fort Defiance, Arizona, working with the Navajo tribe in the Public Health Service.  He did residency at Children’s Hospital and a fellowship at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Allen was a renaissance man with a quest for life.  He was fearless and self-taught in countless endeavors.  Among his many interests were: running, cycling, wind-surfing, skiing, softball (his team never won but they had the most fun, until they were asked to leave the league due to lack of talent), movies, jazz music, the Celtics, the Red Sox, and trips abroad with Linda.  He made the most delicious fruit bowls in the morning for his children.

Allen was a sweet soul, incredibly kind, and a friend to anyone who crossed his path.  To know him was to love him, and he loved you back.

Friends and family are invited to his funeral on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m at Temple Beth Shalom, 670 Highland Avenue, Needham followed by burial at Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut Street, Newton.  People are welcome to visit at Amy and Matt’s home following the interment until 6:00 p.m., and also on Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.  Donations may be in Allen’s memory to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America  — http://hdsa.org.

“It is over, God has taken my father to be with my mother and Michael. I will miss talking to him every night, miss his wisdom, and his humor. He left on his own terms and I have to know that though I am sad he is out of pain. I have to hope that where he has gone is a better place and he will be greeted by his family and be young and vital again.”

Mildred (Dulman) Zeprun

March 26, 2017

Stoughton, MA, formerly of Milton and Randolph. Millie passed away after a short illness on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at age 91. She is survived by Eliott Zeprun and his wife Diane of Stoughton, Sheila Holland and her husband Michael of Brockton, and Renee Diauto and her husband Frank of Norton. She is also survived by family friend, Nancy Hampson, sister-in-law Ruth Tuler and her husband Paul, and her sister-in-law Doris Zeprun. Millie is survived by eight grandchildren: Scott Zeprun, Tracy Laberge, Jesse Diauto, Kimberly Holland, Jason Holland, Melinda Barbosa, Dr. Roshanna Zeprun and Risa Morse. Millie also leaves six great-grandchildren: Aubrie Laberge, Joshua Laberge, Luke Barbosa, Gabriel Barbosa, Megan Morse and Kate Morse. Millie was predeceased by her husband Louis and her sister Sylvia Wolfe, brothers Albert Dulman, Herbert Dulman, sisters-in-law Betty Dulman and Jane Dulman and brothers-in-law Louis Wolfe and Jack Zeprun. Millie was a business partner at the famous Zeppy’s Baigel Bakery where she worked from 1969 until her retirement in 2006. She and her sister-in-law Doris Zeprun were the driving force behind her husband Louis and his brother Jack in bringing their business to become the largest privately owned producer of fresh bagels in New England. Millie was born in Roxbury in 1925 where she graduated from Roxbury Memorial High School. She and her three siblings were raised by two deaf parents, Elias and Anna Dulman. She sadly lost her father, who was a tailor in Boston’s garment industry, when she was ten years old. During WWII, Millie  dedicated her weekly salary to buying candy and toiletries to send to soldiers on the battlefield. Her home on Seaver Street in Roxbury became a hangout for returning soldiers who were friends of her brothers. One of those handsome soldiers, a bagel baker, Louis Zeprun, became her husband of 67 years. Millie never forgot her first date with Louis, when her brother’s friend needed a short girl for a night out dancing. That’s where the lasting love affair started and never ended. Millie will be sadly missed by the hundreds of employees she had over her years in business, many with whom she remained life-long friends. Graveside service will be at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St., Sharon, on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 12:45pm. Memorial observance will be at the home of Eliott Zeprun on Sunday and Monday 4:00-8:00pm. Phyllis (Kaplan) Salvin

March 24, 2017

Phyllis Salvin, of Needham, formerly of Newton, passed away on March 24th, 2017 at age  93.  92 of those years were lived in good health and in happy pursuits. Sadly, the last few months were quite challenging which made her family very sad.

After her husband died and left her a widow at 65, she began to travel the world. When that got to be too much, in her 80’s, she took cruises and traveled across America, Canada and Alaska, and the Caribbean. At 88, her family finally took away her license when a non-English speaking person called to tell them, in very broken English, that she was in a bank about 25 miles from where she lived. She thought it was just another great adventure and no big deal. Her car was sold the next week. Until barely a year ago, she was interested in everything and had no shortage of nasty words to use for agent orange. She wanted to vote for Hillary in this election and see her elected, but became too ill at the last minute. Her greatest desire was to live long enough to see her granddaughter, Jenny, have a baby. She got double that pleasure when her niece also had a baby about the same time. Phyllis was a United States Marine who served during WWII, a college graduate at 50, a competitive bridge player, a business owner, a great grandmother times 4, and a world traveler. Her family states that was a life well-lived.

Shiva will be at the home of Joni and Michael Schockett, 174 Evelyn Road, Needham, MA, on Monday and Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 and Wednesday from 7-9.

Donations may be made to The Hebrew Rehabilitation Center, 1200 Centre Street, Roslindale, MA 02131, Temple Reyim, 1860 Washington Street, Auburndale, MA, or to the charity of your choice.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at Sharon Memorial Park. Phyllis would have been so proud of the beautiful honors bestowed upon her by the United States Marine Corps.

Molly Blatt

March 2, 2017

Of Brookline, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, on March 1, 2017. A Jewish refugee from Heidelberg, Germany, Molly arrived in Brooklyn, NY, in 1938 where she lived until she moved to Brookline ten years ago to be near her son Marty and his family in Cambridge.  Molly could have become a pediatrician in Germany had she not been forced to flee.  She studied public health nursing and worked as a visiting nurse and in her husband Bernie’s family fur business in Park Slope, a neighborhood she loved.  Later, she worked for Planned Parenthood.

Molly left Germany alone at age 18.  Her father died in Gurs prison camp.  The Nazis murdered many of her relatives. Her mother and brother Henry fled in 1940, but Henry was drafted into the army and died in combat on Christmas, 1944; his father died four years earlier on Christmas.  Her granddaughter Emma was born on Christmas.  Until her final days, Molly, a consummate storyteller, recounted  vivid details of the rise of the Nazis.  The Jewish Heritage Museum in New York includes interviews with her.  Her son interviewed her as part of a Northeastern seminar he taught –  https://vimeo.com/155122400.  Molly spoke about the Holocaust to classes of her granddaughters, Emma and Rosa, and at the Devotion School in Brookline.  She traveled with her son to Heidelberg in 2001 for a reunion of former Jewish citizens and her son participated in the 2011 program with Rosa.

Immigration restrictions by the United States led directly to the murder of many Jews by the Nazis.  No one could enter the country without an affidavit from an American citizen.  Adolph Keller provided affidavits for her mother and brother and he arranged for Molly to work as nurse for his daughter Bernice’s baby, Robert.  Molly and Robert’s widow Sally and her sons have been as close as family.

Molly had a wonderful sense of humor and never became embittered.   She was a devoted daughter, mother, and grandmother.  After retirement, she engaged in painting and writing.  As a nurse, she loved the circle of nurses centered around her daughter-in-law, Betty Munson.

Molly had a great capacity for caregiving.  She helped raise Dajin, her daughter’s son.   She managed the care for her husband and mother, who both died at home.  She provided strong support as her daughter succumbed to cancer.

Molly is survived by her son Martin, his wife Betty, their daughters Emma and Rosa, her grandson Dajin Flores, and many friends and relatives in Boston, New York and elsewhere who cherish her memory.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Molly’s name to the Blue Card which provides direct financial assistance to needy Holocaust survivors.www.bluecardfund.org
