Aron Lieb

January 10, 2011

Aron -Lieb- age  91, survivor of Auschwitz, died Sunday at Hebrew Senior Life in Roslindale. He formerly lived in Boston, Randolph and Sharon. Mr. Lieb grew up in Zychlin, Poland. He was taken from the Zychlin ghetto in 1941 and spent the rest of the war as a slave laborer and prisoner at numerous concentration camps. He was liberated in 1945 and came to America in 1949. He worked as a counterman at the G & G Deli and other Boston area restaurants.

He was predeceased by his wife Bernice Lieb, and by his parents and four siblings who perished at Chelmno in 1942.

He is survived by brother Bill Libfrajnd, longtime companion Nerry Berman, devoted aide Cynthia Joseph and loving friend Susan Kushner Resnick.

Harry Garson

Harry Garson died at the age of 91, at his home in Newton, Massachusetts,on
January 7, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. Harry moved with his
wife, Gladys, to Newton, to be closer to his son, Steve, after living in
the New Haven area of Connecticut for 86 years. During WWII, he was
stationed in Dakka, India, where he worked as a Seargent,in charge of
entertainment and morale of the troops on his Army base. Harry was a
Justice of the Peace in Woodbridge, Connecticut,and took pride in
conducting weddings and making them memorable and meaningful. He was a past
member of the B’nai Jacob congregation, and co-founder of the Jewish
Historical Society of New Haven. Harry helped initiate 40 units of elderly
housing, sponsored by B’nai  Brith, was a volunteer for Tower One Senior
Housing, Boy Scout Troup 41, and a reader in the New Haven public schools.
He was a member of the Woodbridge Democratic Town Committee, and served as
Chairman of the B.O.W. Softball League.

As part of  Harry’s sense of history, he spearheaded a project to preserve
the Edgerton Estate bridge in Hamden, by getting trades people and
suppliers to donate all supplies and labor to reconstruct his historic
bridge. He was active in the preservation of the New Haven city hall to
prevent its destruction after the construction of its replacement building.

Harry loved helping others. He extended himself in friendship
to acquaintances, friends, and family. He frequently wrote letters tothe
editor about political and social issues. He was a great storyteller, with
great stories to tell.

Harry was predeceased by his son, Dan Garson of Toronto, Canada, and
is survived by his loving, wife, Gladys (Smith), son, Steven Garson and his wife
 Barbara, of Newton, MA, daughter, Linda Garson Smith and her husband David 

Of  Belfast, Maine, grandchildren David and
Sarah Garson and Andrew Smith.Donations in
Harry’s name may be made to the American DiabetesAssociation,1701 N.
Beauregard Street, Alexandria, VA 22311. The funeral will be held on
Monday  January 10 at 1:00 pm at The Newton Cemetery Chapel 791  Walnut St. Newton Interment will follow at the Newton Cemetery. Shiva will be held at
Harry and Gladys’ home, Cabot Park Village, 280 Newtonville  Avenue, Newton.

Michael A. Linshaw, 70, died at home surrounded by his family on December 31, 2010. In a long and distinguished medical career, he made significant contributions in the field of Pediatric Nephrology as a clinician, teacher, and scientist, improving the lives of many children and their families, mentoring numerous young doctors, and conducting research that influenced the standard of care. He joined the faculty at the University of Kansas in 1975, working subsequently at the University of Connecticut, Tufts University, and for the past ten years at Harvard Medical School and MGH. He was a skilled classical pianist, chess player, bird watcher, and nature photographer. Beloved son of the late Charles and Emily Linshaw, he was predeceased by a brother, Jack and is survived by his loving wife Diane and three sons, Charles, Andrew and David. Memorial service to be held at 1pm, Wednesday January 5, 2011 in the chapel at Massachusetts General Hospital, Ellison Building , ( First Floor ), 55 Fruit  St. Boston .Visiting hours at home on Wednesday from 3-5pm and Thursday from 2-5pm with a Minyan service at 5pm on both days. Norman B.  Asher 84, of Dedham, formerly of Newton, on November 15 after long illness.  The son of the late Dorothy and Jacob Asher, he was born and raised in Worcester.  In 1945, as a corporal in the Army Combat Engineers, he boarded a transport bound for the invasion of Japan that was set to sail when Japan surrendered.  After graduating from Clark University, on whose Board of Trustees he served for many years, he received his LL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1951.  As a young attorney with the Internal Revenue Service he participated in the drafting of the Internal Revenue Code of 1954.  For over forty years, he practiced corporate and tax law in Boston with the firm now known as WilmerHale and loved every minute of it.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lenore (Elman), his sons and daughters-in-law Steven and Rebecca Warner, Jacob and Nancy Hosay, Benjamin and Liza, and Robert and Jennifer, and his ten cherished grandchildren: Daniel, Samuel, Sophie, Eve, Henry, Lucas, Maggie, Theo, Elias, and Annabel, all of whom miss him something awful.   He is also survived by his beloved sister, Margery Russem, her husband Jerome, and six nieces and nephews.  He loved birdwatching, tales of mountaineering, Verdi’s operas, hot soup, eggs fried in hollowed-out pumpernickel, raising money for the Combined Jewish Philanthropies, shopping at Filene’s Basement, and most of all his family.  Over the last four years, he stoically refused to allow a daunting series of medical problems to overcome his wit, his warmth, and his spirit.  Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Wednesday, November 17 at Temple Shalom of Newton, 175 Temple Street, West Newton, followed by interment at Sharon Memorial Park.  Visitors are welcomed from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 18 and 2 to 4 p.m. on Friday, November 19 at his late residence, 3320 Great Meadow Road, Newbridge House, Dedham.  In lieu of flowers, remembrances in his memory may be made to Clark University,  950 Main St., Worcester, MA 01610 or Hebrew Senior Life, 1200 Centre St. Roslindale, MA 02131

Muriel Elaine  Zase,  (Hamilt) “Midge” Was born October 9, 1921 in Brookline, MA to Maurice and Tillie (Levine) Hamilt. She passed away on November 3, 2010 in Delray Beach FL. She was an honor student with 2 double promotions who graduated from Brookline High School and went on to graduate cum laude from Simmons College. She then joined the work force and became the first woman chemist ever hired by Lever Brothers. Midge married Dr. Selig G. Zase on June 13, 1943 as he was graduating from dental school and enlisting as an officer in the U.S. Army where he served with distinction until 1946. They lived first in Randolph, MA and then for twenty years in Newton where they raised three children; Marty Zase, Elly Lampner and Jeanie Merowitz. They also had four grandchildren; Michelle Manchuso, Chris Lampner, David Merowitz and Stacy Merowitz: and two great grandchildren; Aimee Whynot and Lacey Whynot. She had four nieces and nephews. Midge was predeceased by her husband Sel in 1997 and their sisters Ruth Sandman and Irene Hilton. While raising her family, she was both a Cub Scout and Brownie/Girl Scout leader. She was an active member of the Noami Charity and many book and discussion groups. Midge later worked as a dental assistant in Sel’s dental offices in Randolph and Newton and did volunteer work at Boston’s Children’s Hospital. Once they retired from dentistry and moved to Delray Beach FL, she continued doing volunteer work teaching reading to youngsters having difficulty in the Delray schools. She was a near concert pianist, a creative knitter and embroiderer and loved to play contract bridge with her friends. She was a passionate attendee of classical and popular music concerts, an ardent theatregoer, and a prolific reader consuming nearly a book a day during most of her last three decades. To her family, she never complained, always said ” I’m fine,” and was a strident supporter and incredible friend to her loving children. She will be deeply missed. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Children’s Hospital in Boston.

  Steven Varon of Weston, MA, formerly of Los Angeles and Redondo Beach, CA, passed peacefully on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Newton Wellesley Hospital, after battling cancer for almost 2 years. He was the loving and devoted husband of Patricia Michaels, formerly of Salem to whom he was married for 26 years. Born in Los Angeles, he was the son of Helen and predeceased by Morgan Varon. He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia and his daughter Erica, his brother Russ and Marshall and his sister in law Karen; his mother in law Beatrice Michaels; brother in laws David and Reissa Michaels, and Gary and Susan Michaels; and sister-in law Susan and Robert D’Angelo.  Steven is also survived by his many nieces and nephews Jessalyn and Deena Michaels, Amanda, Abby and Matthew D’Angelo, Nicholas, Anthony, Alex and Ryan Michaels, Alana, Melissa, Brett, Morgan Varon and predeceased by Matt Varon.

Steven, a gemologist, was employed  at the family business, Morgan’s Jewelers of Torrance, California prior to moving east. Steven had many interests, hobbies and passions.  His life’s devotion was to his family, encouraging and supporting his daughter Erica as she competed at the highest levels of gymnastics all the way to her current place on the gymnastics team at the University of California- Berkeley.  These family moments were his most special and he will always be remembered as a loving husband and father and for his kindness and strength of character. He will be dearly missed as “Uncle Schmuel ”

 A private memorial service will be held in Weston on Wednesday evening, November 3. A west coast memorial service will be held at the home of Russell Varon in Manhattan Beach, CA on Sunday, November 7.
