Stephen Halem

February 13, 2023

Stephen Halem of Newton, MA, passed away on February 13, 2023. Beloved husband of Lynne Halem.  Devoted father of Adam Halem and his wife Heather, and of Samantha Halem and her husband, David Himelfarb.  Proud grandfather of Maya, Jacob, Lucas, and Travis. Loving brother of Roberta Penchina and the late Richard Halem.

By profession, Steve was an oral surgeon, a 1966 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Forsyth Dental Institute and Harvard University and a postgraduate degree in periodontology from Tufts University.

Steve was deeply committed to research in the area of dental disease and to excellence in clinical practice.  He was beloved by his patients, who valued his gentleness and his endless stories to calm their nerves.  Most of all, they viewed him as a friend.

First and foremost, Steve was a family man.  To him, his family was the best, something he never hesitated to tell anyone who would listen to him.

Steve was loved and admired by all who knew him.  He was always ready to engage in conversation, lend a smile, or a helping hand.  His presence and kindness will be missed by all.

Deborah Marlowe Hauser

Deborah Marlowe Hauser died peacefully at age 86 on February 11, 2023, after a period of declining health. She faced the end of her life as she did everything else, with grace and dignity. To the end, Deborah remained actively connected with and engaged in the lives of beloved family and friends.

Three generations of Deborah’s progeny will remember her with smiles. She and her husband Harry Hauser built their family and shared an almost-five-decade-long marriage, until his passing in 2003. Deborah often said she had wanted “four sons, four years apart” and indeed – from age 19 to 31, every four years – she and Harry welcomed their sons Mark, Joshua, Bradford and Matthew. Deborah appreciated her connection with the families of her sons and their wives, Andrea, Kate, Nurit and Susan, and felt blessed at each milestone reached by the grandchildren and great-grandchildren she had the pleasure of knowing: Jeff and George; Zach and Jake; Daniel (and his wife Einav), Jonathan, Tuvya, and Rachel; Ben and Alex; and Ariel, Yair and Lavi.

Deborah grew up in Brooklyn and Great Neck, New York. Her younger brother, Brian Marlowe, survives Deborah; their older sister, Nina Marlowe, predeceased her. As a child, Deborah was a disciplined student and a lover of books and art. Before she chose to defer her studies to begin her family, she was prepared to study Art History at Barnard College.

Deborah enjoyed a lifelong love of literature: she read avidly, recommended astutely, and supported public libraries everywhere she lived. She appreciated art and enthusiastically introduced her children and grandchildren to museums in Boston and New York. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum was a particular favorite. Over decades, Deborah created beautiful needlepoint works, many customized as special gifts for children and grandchildren. Deborah played the piano, attended the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s performances weekly for years and years, and had classical music playing in her home from dawn to dusk. She served many institutions, including Big Sister Boston, the Wang Center, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Temple Israel Sisterhood, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where she was ultimately named an Adviser Emeritus.

Deborah was a beautiful woman at every age, and suffused her homes and endeavors with beauty, style, and elegance. With her green thumb, she nurtured plants with amazing results. Her gardenias bloomed year after year and she gifted generations of spider plants to family and friends. Her homes displayed her mindfully collected and curated art, furniture, and curios. Family and friends appreciated but could not match Deborah’s consistently conscientious correspondence; she kept postal services busy delivering notes and cards around the United States and to destinations in Canada and Israel.

Deborah participated actively in Jewish life, marking the weekly Sabbath, supporting numerous communities’ institutions, and engaging in lifelong learning. She loved to travel and her many journeys to Israel were among her favorites.

Deborah and Harry chose Newton, Massachusetts as a wonderful place to raise their sons. Later they enjoyed their Lake Winnipesaukee life together. Deborah was fortunate at age 70 to embark on her friendship with David Booth. In recent years, Deborah settled into a daily routine centering on caring for Gus (her Yorkshire Terrier) and Fred (her lovebird parrot) and, with David, dining at their favorite restaurants and exploring the New Hampshire and Maine coasts. Deborah and David shared 16 beautiful years of travel, adventure and companionship in and beyond Wolfeboro and Exeter, New Hampshire and David will feel her absence deeply.

In every endeavor, Deborah touched the lives of the people she met, sharing her friendship and love. Many more people than just her sons and grandchildren appreciated and benefited from her maternal love, support and wisdom. Deborah will be missed by family and uncountable friends.

Rest in peace, Deborah, Mom, Gram. We’ll all continue to love you “millions and billions”, x 4.

Services at 11:30 am Tuesday, February 14, Temple Emanuel, 385 Ward St, Newton Centre, MA., 02459. Burial at Temple Emeth Cemetery, 776 Baker St. West Roxbury. Shiva will follow the burial and be held at Temple Emanuel from 2pm – 5pm and on Wednesday and Thursday evening from 6pm – 8pm at the home of Dr. Mark and Andrea Hauser.

Saul J. Palder

February 5, 2023

Saul J. Palder passed away peacefully on February 5, 2023 at age 96. Known to most people as Bubbles, Saul is survived by daughters Caron Palder (Ed Weiss) and Amy Palder (Christiane Palder-Levine), grandchildren William Weiss (Meagan McGee), Casey Weiss (Dylan Hercher) and was predeceased by his wife Rhoda Silver Palder. Saul was born in Boston, Massachusetts – a city that he loved passionately and where he resided the majority of his life.

Saul was a proud veteran of the Navy, serving in WW 2. He felt so strongly about serving his country he lied about his age so that he could enlist early. The youngest of 5 children, Saul stood out for his big personality. Quick with a joke and a twinkle in his eye, he was often the center of any gathering.

Saul graduated from the University of Miami where he playfully says he “majored in golf” and went into the family tire business. He was married to the beautiful Rhoda Silver and they remained married for 65 years. Saul always said that he was so lucky to have married Rhoda. She supported him devotedly throughout their life together. When the family business failed, they moved to Tucson, Arizona with their infant daughter, Caron. But Boston called him home and they returned after a short period of time. They moved into an area of Newton called Oak Hill Park which had been designed primarily for veterans and was a wonderful place for their children. A second daughter, Amy was born almost 7 years after Caron and all were delighted.

Throughout his life Saul was largely in businesses related to the automotive industry and met much success. He had his own tire business, a muffler business, bought and managed a large commercial building in Hyde Park, and supplied parts to thousands of muffler stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. Saul, always a thinker, began to try to create a better catalytic converter. While that invention did not come to fruition his true passion of creating a better mousetrap was born.

In his 70’s Saul obtained a patent for a product that became the “Smart Spin”, a divided lazy susan with containers that would neatly organize your cabinets. This product was brought to market by the “As Seen on TV” people and became the largest seller in their history. He was on the cover of “Inventor” magazine. He continued coming up with ideas throughout the rest of his life.

Saul and Rhoda traveled extensively and spent many winters in Puerto Rico at the Rio Mar Hotel. Saul became the “mayor” walking through the halls and being greeted by everyone.

Saul always liked to cook and had his specialties. His home fries were the best and he once brought his amazing clam chowder to Felicia’s restaurant in the North End for her to taste. She said it was really good. Saul and Rhoda were regulars in the Boston dining scene.  He just had to call and say “a table for Bubbles” and he got one.

Saul loved sports. He was a lifelong Red Sox fan and even had a try-out for the team. In later years he was most passionate about football and drove Amy and her wife Christiane crazy trying to find the Patriots game on TV in Atlanta.

Saul touched people in all facets of his life. He always wanted to be known as a mensch, and he will be remembered that way by many. He will be so very missed.

Services will be held on Friday, February 10,2023 at 11:30 AM at the Allen Center, 35 Webster Street, West Newton. In lieu of flowers, donations in Saul’s memory may be made to The Jimmy Fund.

Esther Epstein

February 5, 2023

Esther Epstein, of Newton, MA passed away February 5, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

Esther was known to all as “Nana,” because anyone who entered her presence she immediately welcomed as family. She was the quintessential matriarch, who devoted her life to ensuring loved ones were happy, healthy, and most importantly, fed. If you were ever lucky enough to attend a holiday or event Nana hosted, you were no doubt amazed by the level of planning and preparation that went into every spread — from pots of her special sweet meatballs, to perfectly tender brisket, to delicious kugel, to her trays upon trays of the most spectacular cookies you’ve ever tasted. Nana was an overachiever when it came to hosting, and the end goal was always to create a special place where her family could convene, celebrate and enjoy each other’s company – ultimately forging an unbreakable bond between her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and anyone else who entered her home.

Beloved wife of the late David J. Epstein for 53 years. Dear daughter of the late Aaron Franklin and Anne (Granofsky) Franklin. John Bliss

February 1, 2023

John Bliss, 82, of Newton, Mass., died of complications from Parkinson’s disease on February 1, 2023. A man who lived his values each day, he leaves behind a light carbon footprint and legacy of deep community impact in the city where he lived for 55 years.

Born on February 11, 1940, in New York City, John spent his boyhood in Bedford, New York. His lifelong love for the environment was inspired by the nearby Westmoreland Sanctuary where he roamed the fields and woods and fished in nearby streams.

John was passionate about protecting green space in Newton and creating safe roads for cyclists and pedestrians. As president of the nonprofit Newton Conservators, he spearheaded the city’s acquisition of the last large parcel of open space on the Charles River in Newton to create the 57 acre Nahanton Park. He chaired the Newton Bicycle/Pedestrian Task Force and served as secretary of the Newton Citizens Energy Commission. He was active with the Democratic City Committee, Newton Sister City Project, and Kidney Transplant/Dialysis Association. For ten years, he worked with a group of Newton residents to successfully pass a snow shovelling ordinance that ensured sidewalks were accessible to pedestrians during the winter.

John’s daily routine reflected his environmental commitment. He recycled, rode his bicycle to work, shopped with canvas grocery bags, and installed LED lightbulbs, a generation before these practices were common.

In the summer of 1963, John was among a group of Harvard Law School students who travelled to the South to support civil rights activism. He worked with the Donald L. Hollowell Law Firm in Atlanta that represented the first black students to be admitted to the University of Georgia. He later recalled a meeting with the late U.S. Congressman John Lewis, who was the same age as John and then chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC).

His devotion to the environment and to civil rights was surpassed only by the love he had for his family. He married his wife, Tamara (Guzik), in 1964 and their two children were born a few years later. John had a special love for the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Whenever he reached a summit, he would look at the mountain range and name every mountain in view. He participated in Sierra Club work trips in Alaska, New Mexico and Colorado, where he assisted park rangers in trail and building maintenance. As a couple, John and Tamara took week-long backpacking trips. They toured New England by bicycle and on cross-country skis. Later, they studied Italian and took five trips to Italy.

A devoted husband and father, John coached his son’s soccer team, spent countless hours on homework, led family hiking trips, and instilled a love of lifelong learning. His children said they didn’t need an encyclopedia or Google, as they could ask Dad for information on nearly any topic and he’d know the answer.

John led an active life despite significant health challenges. Diagnosed with kidney disease at age two, John received a kidney transplant from his sister, Virginia, when he was in his forties. He lived with the transplanted kidney for 42 years, far surpassing expectations.

John spent most of his career in information technology at the Central Transportation Planning Staff, a state agency dedicated to transportation in the Boston region. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, he learned computer programming in the 1960s and got in on the ground floor of the emerging IT profession.

He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Tamara (Guzik); children, Stephen Bliss of Brookline and Mimi Bliss of Nashville; grandson, William Barrett of Nashville; sister, Virginia Bliss of Sutton, Mass.; nephew Peter Guzik of Holland, Penn; and many beloved cousins. He was the son of the late John B. Bliss and Maude Lee Bliss.

Donations may be made in John’s name to Newton at Home or Newton Conservators. There will be a celebration of life in the Spring.

Kerry Dugan

January 12, 2023

A link to view the recording of the funeral service can be found here.

To read words of remembrance please click here.

Kerry Dugan passed peacefully on Tuesday morning, pain-free and surrounded by family. An arduous struggle with Lewy Body Dementia slowly stole one of the most beautifully gifted minds one might have the pleasure to encounter. As a veteran, father, grandfather, husband, brother, and professor, he touched thousands of lives with his unique flavor of philosophy, religion, ethics, the paranormal, and terrible jokes.

Kerry was an Air Force veteran, serving at Sculthorpe Air Force Base in England before returning to the U.S. in 1964 to attend Northeastern University.  While at Northeastern he pursued his passion in theatre, serving as president for the Silver Masque for several years, working as a crew member, student director, and excelling as a stage manager.

Kerry’s first co-op job as a computer programmer at John Hancock Life Insurance Company led him down a career path in IT, where he directed computer centers at such companies as the United Way, Camp Dresser & McKee, and Tufts University.

Ultimately however, his love for philosophy and teaching beckoned too strongly to ignore. Building on his undergraduate study of philosophy, Kerry pursued advanced degrees in education and philosophy during which time he began teaching under the tutelage of a master in the Socratic method of teaching philosophy.  His 25-year career as a charismatic faculty member in the philosophy department at Northeastern University touched the lives of countless students, so many of whom felt their lives had been forever changed by him.  He lives on in the lives of others.

Lawrence A. Kellem

January 12, 2023

Lawrence A. Kellem of Hull passed peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at the age of 90. Larry was predeceased by his amazing wife of 62 years, Cynthia, and is survived by his son David Kellem and his partner Kristin Beane, his son Steven Kellem and his partner Andraea McKenney, and his daughter, Amy Slotnick and her husband Dan. Larry is the grandfather of Sarah Rubin and her husband Matt, Jordan Kellem and his wife Katie, Matthew Kellem, Noah Kellem, Will Kellem, and Nell Asbrand. Larry’s life was beautifully brightened by his great-grandsons Parker Kellem and Davis Rubin. Larry was a renowned citizen and leader of the Town of Hull, which was his fulltime hometown since the 1950’s. His many civic accomplishments include leading the establishment of a permanent, full-service medical center in Hull, for which he was honored by the dedication of the facility in his name. During the Blizzard of ‘78 Larry organized the town-wide response effort to establish temporary shelter for hundreds of displaced residents, and he was a key figure in the town’s recovery in the aftermath of the storm. Even though Larry took much pride in serving as president and board member of the Hull Chamber of Commerce and as President, Treasurer and Board Member of Temple Beth Sholom, his
favorite accomplishment was managing the 1971 Hull Little League championship team, Paragon Park. To countless other civic and charitable groups, Larry was a willing and much-sought-out advisor. Professionally, Larry was a respected and talented attorney. He was one of the last great small-town general practitioners, maintaining his private practice in Hull for over 50 years. He met the legal needs of nearly everyone and in every way: from drafting simple wills to crafting zoning by-laws; from defending Hull’s sons and daughters (who may have had too much to drink) to shepherding the permitting of hotels and licensing of restaurants. He was a constant advocate and a sage influence at Hull Town Meetings. If you wanted something done well, and fairly, Larry was your guy. His sons, who practiced with him for many years, and his daughter (who escaped the practice of law), lovingly referred to him as “Loophole Larry.” Services will be at Temple Beth Sholom, Boyer Auditorium, 600 Nantasket Avenue, Hull, on Monday, January 16, at 11:00 a.m. Burial to follow at Hull Village Cemetery. Following burial, a memorial reception will be at The Parrot, at 1 Hull Shore Drive. The memorial observance will continue at 2A Marina Drive (Spinnaker Island Clubhouse), Hull. Observance hours will be 6-9 p.m. Monday evening, and 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, donations may be kindly made to Temple Beth Shalom of Hull or the Hull Scholarship Fund (care of Hingham Institution for Savings in Hull).

Alyse Naomi “Omi” Kamy Cantor

January 12, 2023

Alyse Naomi “Omi” Kamy Cantor, of Framingham, Massachusetts, died Thursday afternoon January 12, 2023, at the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center in Roslindale.  She was 86.  Born in New York City, she moved with her sister Roberta and parents to various cities and towns in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.  The daughter of a Hebrew Educator, she was among the first women of her generation to attend Hebrew School and have a Bat Mitzvah ceremony.  Education was life-long and nonnegotiable to her.

One month after matriculating at Douglas College, the sister college of Rutgers University, she met the love of her life, Paul Cantor, at a Hillel function. Six-foot, three inch Paul, and five foot Omi made quite a dashing, if not seemingly incompatible, pair. They remained inseparable until his death in 2020.

Omi had many professions and many passions.  In addition to being an at-home parent to three precocious boys, she taught Hebrew School, worked as bookkeeper and partner in Paul’s car rental company, engaged in market research at a company acquired by Equifax, then, at the age of 60, opened her own market research company, which she operated until 2016.  She was an avid knitter, reader, news junkie, mall-walker, cookbook collector, and traveler.

Her loves were unmediated and also nonnegotiable. Family. Judaism. Food. Democratic politics. A woman of unceasing energy and motivation, she was  at her most elevated self when these were experienced in combination, as in celebration of Passover seders, when she would host 25 or more family members and assorted invitees to an evening few would forget, and most would eagerly await the following year.

Omi was a zealous investor. She invested in her synagogue family at Temple Israel in Natick. She invested in cherished and lifelong friendships made throughout her life’s chapters, whether from college, or tenures in New Brunswick, Pittsburgh, New Canaan, and Framingham.  Omi invested in her love of beautiful clothes. She even belonged to an investment club.

But by far, her greatest and most treasured investment was in Paul, her adoring husband of 63 years, her three sons and their spouses – Marc and Emily (Lazar), Steve and Zhanna Cantor, Larry and Deborah Cantor, her grandchildren and their spouses, Dmitri and Dinah (Ribarsky), Tali and Mike (Feldman), Eva and Ralf (De Houwer), Josh and Ilayda (Williamson), Max and Avanna Cantor, Rachel Lazar, and Nate Baker – and her three great grandchildren, Oren, Lev and Mischa.  And she joyfully included in this portfolio of wealth her devoted sister, Roberta Diamond, and loving nephews and nieces.

Omi was an indomitable force, whose loss leaves us all with a bit less certainty.  Her memory is certainly a blessing.  Much gratitude is given to all who lovingly cared for her in last days, including her care team at the HRCA, and of course, all of her friends and community.

The funeral is graveside, to be held at 11AM Sunday, January 15, 2023 at the Beit Olam East Cemetery, 42 Concord Road, Wayland MA.

Shiva minyanim and visitation will be held at Marc and Emily’s. Due to Covid concerns, space and times will be limited in numbers.  There is an online sign up at http://www.site38.com/cgi-bin/maorshiva/signup.pl

Donations in Omi’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.  Based on her passions, she would have selected any of these:

Arlene Rita (Shneider) Ehrlich

December 17, 2022

Arlene Rita (Shneider) Ehrlich of Dedham formerly of Boynton Beach, Florida and Framingham. Daughter of the late Esther and Irving Shneider. Sister of Lois Caparco. Wife of the late Jacob Daniel (Danny) Ehrlich. Loving mother of the late Michael Ehrlich and Karen and Steven Rubin of Wellesley, MA. Proud grandmother to Sam and Emily Rubin and Lauren. She was a self-proclaimed “chocoholic”, lover of all things purple and sparkly, and had the most special “smiling eyes”.

Arlene was raised in Cambridge and Dorchester. At just ten years old, she lost her mother, Esther leaving a painful void that stayed with her for her entire life. She was married to J. Daniel Ehrlich in May of 1953 and together they raised their family in Framingham for many years. They were both involved in the community. Danny was master of Perfection Lodge in Framingham in 1970. Arlene was his biggest supporter and always proud of his accomplishments with the Masonic Masons and as a Jeweler. They enjoyed and cherished their time traveling the world. Every trip would be a new journey with wonderful experiences to share. Paris was one of her favorites…. but specifically in the springtime!

Arlene worked several years at Framingham Savings Bank and ultimately became its Manager of Collections. It was there she earned the nickname, “Sherlock Ehrloch”. Arlene treasured and embraced her friends from Framingham. So much so that she and Danny decided to move with their lifelong friends to Florida to retire and continue to build beautiful memories. And that they did! -In Boynton Beach, Arlene was voted to the Board of Directors of her community and President of the New England Club. She looked forward to the Framingham Breakfast Club every month. Her calendar was always filled with activities and her family felt fortunate that she enjoyed her well-deserved retirement time. Wonderful new friendships were made in Florida along with fostering old friends. Her children and grandchildren cherished spending vacation time in Florida. Sneaking Orios at night was one of Sam and Emily’s favorite memories, but nothing got past “Sherlock Ehrloch” especially all the crumbs left behind!

Arlene ultimately moved back to Massachusetts to be with her family in 2021. She enjoyed reacquainting herself with New England, including the weather! Special time was spent getting “primped” with Karen and taking drives down memory lane (aka Route 9) … but only when Steven had a full tank of gas. There’s a Chico’s calling her name and we know there’s a good discount coming her way. Arlene’s legacy will live on, and our love and appreciation will never fade.

Arnold D. Vetstein of Newton and Boston died on December 12, 2022, at the age of 96. Arnold was a long-time practicing dentist in Framingham, a major contributor to organized dentistry, a co-founder of the League School of Greater Boston, and a decorated Korean War veteran. He will be remembered for his generous spirit, sense of humor, thoughtfulness, and commitment to bettering the world.

Arnold grew up in humble beginnings in Roxbury, and through his determination and drive went to Boston Latin School and Tufts Dental School through his service with the Navy V-12 Program. He always said that Boston Latin was the most significant learning experience of his life. He began his military career as a dentist in the Army Dental Corps and was later a battalion dental surgeon during the Korean War. Because of the shortage of medical officers, he took on the dual assignment as battalion surgeon and dental surgeon. His battalion aided the U.S. Marines at the Chosin Reservoir as well as covered the withdrawal from North Korea. His unit was the last out of North Korea. During his time in Korea, he was awarded both the Silver Star for gallantry in action and the Bronze Star for meritorious service.

In 1955, Arnold opened his dental office in Framingham, where he practiced for 45 years. He also was an assistant clinical professor in prosthetics at Tufts University of Dental Medicine, where he taught for 17 years.

An active member of organized dentistry, Arnold was president of the Massachusetts Dental Society, the Greater Boston Dental Society, and the West Metropolitan Dental Society. He also was chairman of the Metropolitan District Dental Society. He was appointed to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Dentistry by Governor Michael Dukakis for two five-year terms and twice served as board chairman. For more than 20 years, he was an examiner for the Northeast Regional Board.

In 1966, Arnold co-founded the League School of Greater Boston with his wife, the late Leona Fine Vetstein, for children with autism. The school is one of the first in New England for students with autism and serves upward of 100 day and residential students on its Walpole campus.

Arnold is survived by his son, Richard A. Vetstein, of Newton; his daughter, Nancy J. Hershfield, and her husband, Robert S. Hershfield, of Falmouth; and his best pal and grandson, Andrew D. Hershfield of Falmouth. The love of his life, his wife, Leona Fine, predeceased him.

Esther Felisa Kalisky

November 27, 2022

Esther Felisa Kalisky (nee Sotenberg) died at her home in Lincoln on Sunday November 27, 2022, at the age of 94. She is survived by her three children, Lyvia, of Jerusalem, Ilona, of Waltham, and Matthew Kalisky, of Newton, and her two grandchildren, Zara Kalisky-Tetreault, of Acton, and Coltrane Kalisky-Tetreault, of Waltham.

Esther, the youngest of two children, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 31, 1928 to Jacob and Elena Sotenberg, who left Poland to escape the persecution of Jews in their homeland.

After finishing high school, Esther traveled to the United States in 1949 with her mother to live with an aunt and attend junior college. In 1950, she met the son of a family friend, Avram Kalisky, whom she married 3 months later. They were married for 69 years until he died in 2019, raising their family in Sudbury.

There are many things that can be said about Esther-she spoke 4 languages, still dreaming in Spanish at times. She lived in Israel twice-once in the 50’s and once from 1972-1989.

She never really knew her grandparents or many of her extended family most of whom had remained in Poland. As a result, she moved back to the States when her first grandchild was born and was a constant presence in her grandchildren’s lives, always living close by.

She always worked outside of the home, but never really had a career. She made many of her daughters’ and granddaughter’s dresses as well as her own. She loved art-and had wanted to be an artist when younger. She loved to knit and read, joining groups for both. She loved to travel. Her last trip was to Israel with her grandchildren in 2017.

She was a staunch feminist, reacting with a smile when told that the Democrats were keeping control of the Senate. Her grandchildren will maintain until their dying day that the repeal of Roe v. Wade is what killed her. She did not suffer fools gladly. Esther would never shy away from giving her opinion, sometimes causing those around her to cringe. Her highest compliment was to say that someone “sparkled”. In her opinion not too many people met that standard. If you did something that she thought was noteworthy, it felt like the sun was shining on you and you alone.

Having dealt with several serious health issues during her life, Esther decided to donate her body to Harvard Medical School, so no funeral service will be held.

We would like to thank those who provided care for Esther-Sudbury River Home Care and Care Dimensions Hospice.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Esther’s name can be made to the Lincoln Council on Aging, Friends of the Lincoln Library or Planned Parenthood.
