Elizabeth Reiman Simons, PhD

April 8, 2019

Elizabeth R. Simons
September 1, 1929 – March 25, 2019

Elizabeth Reiman Simons, PhD, 89, passed peacefully on March 25, 2019.  Liz was a resident of Newton, MA since 1953, raising her children in the same house that she lived in until the fall of 2017 when she moved to Lasell Village.  She loved the time spent at her home on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, preferably with family and friends. Liz was the only woman to graduate in her class at Cooper Union in 1950 with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree.  She went on to earn her PhD in Physical Chemistry at Yale in 1953 where she met her beloved husband Harold Simons (deceased 1999).  Liz is survived by her two children, Lee Simons Mulert (Mark) and Bob Simons (Patrice) as well as her five grandchildren, Claire and Kevin Mulert and Wesley, Josh and Drew Simons, all of whom she loved very much, and by her faithful companion, LuLu the boxer.

As a woman scientist, Liz was a pioneer, performing cutting edge biochemistry research, running a large research laboratory at Harvard Medical School and then becoming a full professor at Boston University School of Medicine. Her career was marked by an amazing record in teaching, grant awards and publications.  Liz inspired many young scientists, including generations of young women whom she mentored to balance success in science with a fulfilling family life.  When they faltered, she was always there to lend an ear, a word of advice or even the voice of reality, for which they continue to be grateful.

Even in “retirement” Liz was very active, teaching literature classes and taking others each semester.  She volunteered at Newton At Home and as a tutor at both Lasell Village and Lasell College.  Liz was also an avid fan of classical music and the arts, actively involved in the Boston Artists Ensemble, and regularly attended events at the Gardner Museum. Her vitality and knowledge will be missed by many of all ages.

In the spirit of her zeal for women in science, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the Elizabeth Simons Memorial Fund established at the Association for Women in Science by clicking on this link AWIS: Elizabeth R Simons Memorial Fund.

Memories/Thoughts: Many have told us they wish to contribute a thought or memory of Elizabeth, or Liz as many of you knew her. We would love to be able to enjoy these.  Please share them by clicking on this link Memorial for Elizabeth Simons and share for all to enjoy.

Thank you,

Lee (Simons), Mark, Claire & Kevin Mulert

Louis Rosenblum

November 15, 1923 to April 4, 2019

Louis (Lou) Rosenblum was born Nov. 15, 1923. His parents, Miriam and Julius, raised him and his younger brother, Myron, in Brooklyn, NY where he attended the Yeshiva of Flatbush, played stoopball and roller skated.

His studies at Brooklyn College were interrupted by service (1943-1946) in the Pacific Theater in the U.S. Army Infantry. He fought in the Battle of Okinawa, was awarded the bronze star and served in the army of occupation in Japan. After completing his B.S. in Chemistry in 1948, he moved to Columbus, OH where he met his life love, Evelyn (Evy), and earned a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry.

For 30 years Lou was a research scientist at the NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, his final role being chief of the Solar and Electrochemical Division, responsible for research and development of space-related photovoltaics and energy storage. He led the lab in developing demonstration projects at home and abroad to show that solar power was practical and suitable for uses around the world.

A pioneer in the movement for freedom of emigration for the Jews of the Soviet Union, Lou was a founder in 1963 of the first organization to advocate for the freedom of Soviet Jews, the Cleveland Council on Soviet Anti-Semitism. The organization’s success was recognized nationally and became a model for the formation of many similar groups. In 1970 Lou’s multi-year effort led to the formation of the Union of Council for Soviet Jews (UCSJ) with member councils in the U.S. and Canada and affiliates in other countries. Lou served as founding president of the UCSJ from 1970-1973.

Lou and Evy were founders of Beth Israel-The West Temple where for decades both served in leadership roles fostering and nurturing Jewish life on Cleveland’s West Side. Both also volunteered for more than 20 years as archival processors with the Jewish History division of the Western Reserve Historical Society.

Lou’s life was filled with hobbies and passions including wilderness hiking, canoeing, sailing, cooking Chinese banquets, cultivating huge quantities of sweet corn, woodworking, folk dancing, square dance calling, Hebrew language study, Torah study, and spending quality time with family.

Lou is survived by his four children, Jan Metz, Miriam Rosenblum and husband Sheldon Benjamin, Diane Rosenblum and husband Henry Gordon, and Daniel Rosenblum and wife Sharon Waxman; eight grandchildren: Samara, Elana, Paul, Malka, Rafi, Maya, Jonah, and Liana; and three great grandchildren: Nia, Azalea, and Oliver. Lou’s wife Evy died in 2013 and his brother Myron died in 2016.

The funeral was held on April 7, 2019 in Wellesley, MA, his home in recent years. A memorial service, to be scheduled, will be held at Cleveland’s Beth Israel-The West Temple. Thelma Gould

March 19, 2019

Thelma Gould (“Thellie”, “Lil Gram”), a beloved Grandmother, Mother, Wife, Sister, and Friend, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2019 at the age of 91. With an uncanny charm and a disarming smile, she was loved by everyone who was lucky enough to cross her path, but especially her family. She cherished her time working for FAO Schwarz, Parker Brothers and later Hasbro, where she created great relationships that endured during and after her decades long career. A woman ahead of her time, she was the primary bread winner for her husband, Veteran Walter Gould and daughter, Mattie.

Nothing was more important to her than her family, which she also made a well-known fact. Even though she lost her husband in 1997 and her only daughter in 2006 – she would tell everyone how lucky she was to be taken care of by her son-in-law Mike Perrera, his wife Luanne and her daughter Christina. All who met Thelma were regaled with glowing stories about her grandson Dan and his partner Amy. Thelma brought light to everyone in her life and she will be sorely missed. A private graveside service will be held in Long Island, where she will join her husband Walter in repose.

Thelma’s dog Brandy brought incredible amounts of joy to Thelma in the later years of her life. In that spirit, the family asks that donations to the MSPCA be made in her memory. You may donate directly to the MSPCA at MSPCA.org or by mail to MSPCA 350 S. Huntington Ave., Boston, MA 02130, Attention Donations.

Richard B. Harris

March 4, 2019

Richard B. Harris enjoyed long conversations with friends and family about the ironies, humor, irrationality, and occasional logic of human behavior. Each discussion was always light, unfocused, and unfinished to be continued at another time. He also focused his considerable athletic skills onto the suitability of his golf swing in the face of spinal stenosis.

As a golf addict, he spent countless hours on the practice range hoping for magic. His game was good enough to always come back for more. He had quite a local reputation for grilling London broil, making birthday cakes with frosting and making meals in a slow cooker.

He died of cancer at age 77 after a short illness at his home in Bonita Springs, Florida. His longtime partner, Bonnie J. Keene, and former business associate and friend, Howard J. Kelley, were at his bedside. Mr. Harris was the son of Sidney and Ida Harris who moved to Worcester, MA when he was in the second grade. Growing up in the Worcester school system and thereafter at the University of Vermont, he developed many lifelong friendships. He was the co-founder of the Westborough Tennis Club and thereafter published real estate booklets. He lived with Bonnie in Westborough, MA for a time and then split his time between Pine Hills in Plymouth, MA and Bonita Springs, FL.

He leaves his children, Andrew Harris, Jay Harris, and Cathy and Donald Miller. He also leaves Bonnie’s children, Susan and husband Joseph Pusjarich, Jill and her husband Joseph Whiteneck, and David and his wife Terry Keene, and 8 very special grandchildren. He also leaves his brother Donald Harris, and was part of the larger Whitman family originally from Worcester with multiple generations now living throughout the country.
