Daniel Dosamantes

Daniel Dosamantes, of Wayland, formally of New York City, age 80, died peacefully on April 30, 2016.  He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, friend, and husband to his late wife, Muriel. He is survived by his daughters Sara and Deborah, son David, grandchildren Jessica, Max, and Celia, and his sister Irma.

Daniel was born in Mexico City, where he spent his childhood.  He lived most of his life in New York City, though for several years during his retirement he resided in Santa Fe, New Mexico.  Daniel had a deep love for the arts, influenced by his father, Francisco Dosamantes, a Mexican painter and lithographer.  His life’s passion was his profession as a talented stone sculptor and painter.  Daniel had many interests including traveling internationally and cross country, visiting museums, hiking, listening to classical music, reading poetry, following and discussing politics, gourmet cooking, and enjoying incredibly strong coffee.  He was an insightful, intelligent, and reflective man who will be greatly missed by his loved ones.

Memorial service to be held at a future date.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Daniel’s memory to the National Parkinson Foundation or the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Sydney M. Liner-of Newton, age 95, passed away peacefully in his home on April 29, 2016, surrounded by his beloved family. Sydney was born on November 22, 1920, the third of four sons to Hilda and Samuel Liner, both of Russia. He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife Alta (Burwen) in 1980 and his beloved second wife, Lenore (Rutman) in 2015. He is survived by his children, Ellen and Richard, grandchild Andrea, stepchildren Robert, Janie and Jackie, and their seven children and four grandchildren. He was the brother of Morton and the late Robert and Rabbi Paul Liner.Sydney was an accomplished baseball pitcher at Brookline High School and attended the Red Sox Rookie Camp in 1942 before enlisting in the US Navy and graduating from Flight school in Pensacola, FL. He was a navigator and pilot of PB-Y’s in the South Pacific, performing search and rescue and night bombing missions before returning to Pensacola to be a primary flight instructor. After the war, he returned to Liner Tire Company with two of his brothers, which was founded by his father in 1910 and continues to operate today as the oldest tire dealership in New England. Sydney was an avid golfer, spending winters in Lake Worth, FL, and continuing to work in the tire business well into his 80’s.Services with military honors will be held on Monday, May 2, 2016 at 2:00pm at the Chapel of Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham St., Sharon. The family will receive guests at 4 York Rd., Waban, MA on Monday after the funeral service until 8:00pm and on Tuesday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Hospice of Good Shepherd, 90 Wells Ave., Newton, MA 02459.

Of Newton, a retired footwear industry executive, died peacefully April 26, 2016 surrounded by loved ones.  He was 91.  Born and raised in Everett, attended Everett public schools.  He served as a Staff Sargent in the 5th Air Force in the Pacific during World War II.  Graduated Suffolk University.  Mr. Groipen was an independent representative for many companies both regional and international.  He was past president of the Boston Shoe Travelers Association, member of the National Shoe Travelers Association, Two-Ten Association, Jewish War Veterans – Post 211, Garden City Lodge of the Masons, and a 55-year member of Temple Emanuel of Newton. Beloved husband for 67 years of Elaine. Devoted father of Beth Melnick of West Hartford, CT, Paul and his partner Todd Satterlee of Chestnut Hill, Larry and his wife Lori of Swampscott. Anna (Segal) Castleman

At age 104, Anna Segal Castleman died peacefully at home in St. Louis on April 10, 2016.  Anna and her late husband Benjamin had three children: Ruth Griffin (wife of the late Emery) of Rochester NY, Jean Chase (wife of Lewis) of St. Louis MO, and Paul Castleman (husband of Linda Blackstone) of San Francisco CA.  Anna loved and was loved by her seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Anna graduated from Wellesley College in 1934 and remained an active alumna through her 75th reunion.  Anna’s other main interests included helping families of foreign MGH doctors settle in Boston and encouraging children’s interest in art as a docent at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

The funeral service will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Temple Israel in Boston, 477 Longwood Ave. (parking on the Riverway) Boston.

of Sudbury, MA, formerly of Penfield NY, died peacefully at home on April 20, 2016 after a long fight with cancer.

He leaves behind his wife Nira, son Ron and his wife Alison, daughter Sharon and her husband Randall Martens, grandson Benjamin Kermisch, granddaughter Lena Martens, cousins Roxana and her husband Abe Shalo of Brooklyn, NY, their daughter Sibyl and her husband Joseph Wilmont of Mineola, NY, Adina and her husband Harold Bartram of London, England.

Dorian was born in Romania, served as an officer in the Israeli army and came to the United States to study. He earned his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and then devoted his career to conducting research for Xerox where he was awarded many patents.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, taking long walks with his dog, traveling and reading.

originally from Binghamton NY, and Marblehead and Swampscott MA, daughter of the late Rose Olsen Pearis and Philip Pearis and the late Arlene J. Pearis, sister of the departed, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday April 17, 2016.   She was married to Attorney Burton W. Gerrig for 58 years.  Her most important achievement in life was her three children, five grandchildren, and her new granddaughter Sophia. Robert, her oldest son, 57, of Natick, MA is a Tufts University graduate and an IRS employee for over 27 years.  Her middle son, Daniel, 55, of Leesburg, VA, is a Cornell University graduate and is an employee of the Department of Defense.  Her daughter Jennifer, of Medway MA, 52, is a graduate of the University of Southern NH and is a manager at Restaurant 45 in Medway MA. Jennifer and David, a wonderful son-in-law, have three boys, the eldest son Craig, 23, is a graduate of the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.  His Fiancé Sophia is studying to be a reiki master.  Their middle son Christopher 21, is a junior at the University of Massachusetts, and is studying kinesiology and intends to pursue a PHD.  Her youngest son Brian, 18, is the Medway High School Senior Class President, a dedicated student, and will be studying economics in the fall at the University of Pittsburgh.  Her middle son, Daniel, and his beloved wife, Yehudit have two children.  Aylon, 17, is the Riverside High School Junior Class President and a talented baseball player.  Their daughter, Ariella, who recently had her bat-mitzvah, is a beautiful talented girl and an aspiring tennis player. Living for her children and grandchildren was the greatest joy in Marcia’s life.

Marcia graduated with a degree in elementary education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and received her master’s degree in Moderate Special Needs from Northeastern University.   Beyond her masters, she furthered her education via additional special needs courses.  As a teacher, Marcia worked with special needs children for 32 years and enjoyed all the time she spent with these very special students. She was known as a patient, kind and loving teacher.

During her time in Parlin House Hospice Residence, Marcia was regularly surrounded by her dear friends Helen Brody and Sandy Bornstein, members of her book club, fellow teachers, and a wonderful hospice staff too many to mention. Marcia had a hard but fulfilling life, suffered many difficulties, but, courageously rose above them.

On Thursday, April 21st at 11:00 am, a memorial service will held at Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Rd, Newton Center.  Interment at Glenwood Cemetery, 25 Glenwood St, Natick, MA will immediately follow the memorial service.  Shiva will be held at the home of Jennifer Walsh, 10 Kimberly Drive, Medway, MA on Thursday, April 21st immediately following interment until 8:00 PM, on Friday April 22nd from noon until 7:00 pm and Saturday April 23rd from 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm for Havdalah followed by Shiva.  Donations in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Dr. David Barbie Research Fund, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA, 02115.

Liz Schwarz died on April 16th peacefully at her home in Milton, MA.  Liz was a long-standing practitioner and advocate for social causes particularly related to homelessness and women’s health. She was also a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend.  Liz touched the lives of countless people in the Boston area through her relentless pursuit of helping those in need whether they were clients, patients, friends or family.

Born Elizabeth J. Schwarz to Thomas and Shirley Schwarz, she was raised in Hartsdale, NY, and graduated from Woodlands High School, Colgate University and Boston University. Liz worked as a social worker in Boston for more than 20 years, at Tufts New England Medical Center and later in private practice. She was known for her extraordinary ability to empathize and help others solve their most difficult and complex personal problems. Liz’s passion was her love of family and her large community of close friends. She loved nothing more than spending time with her wife and daughters. Her warmth lent itself to building strong relationships and her sense of humor and whimsy with friends and strangers alike will be greatly missed.

The list of family who love and will miss her includes her wife Lisa Perricone and her daughters Viviana Schwarz and Sara Perricone. She is predeceased by her mother Shirley Schwarz. Also surviving are her father Thomas H. Schwarz, step-mother Susan Schwarz and step-father Leon Gutherz, her brother Doug Schwarz, sister-in-law Beth Marcus and nephew and niece Marcus and Julia Schwarz. She is also survived by Erich, Linda and Nick Hammerle of Vero Beach, Florida and many aunts, uncles and cousins

A memorial service will be held at Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Road, Newton, MA 02459 on Thursday, April 21st at 2:00 p.m.

Rosalind E. (Silverman) Rowley

Rosalind “Roz” Rowley (née Silverman) died peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, April 14th in Cambridge, MA at the age of 70.

Rosalind is survived by her husband, Robert Rowley of Watertown; son, Eric Lannquist of Quincy; and step-son Kevin Rowley of Springfield.

Rosalind was born on March 12, 1946 in Malden, MA to Alice and Bernard Silverman. She graduated from Boston College with a master’s degree in Special Education. Rosalind worked for over 40 years as a teacher for Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA. She had a special interest in Braille Literacy and in 2010 was honored by the Braille Institute for Excellence in Braille Instruction.

Rosalind had a passion for teaching, shopping (especially jewelry) reading, travel, and going to the movies. She was an active and dedicated member of the MA chapter of the American Council of the Blind and the Perkins Alumni Association, where in 2015 won the distinguished Alumni Award.

A funeral is scheduled for Tuesday, April 19th at 10:00 am in the Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Rd. Newton, MA, with graveside services to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery on Warren St. Watertown. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rosalind’s life. Please send donations to American Cancer Society. age 74, of Belmont, MA, died peacefully at home on April 13, 2016. Born December 1, 1941, in New York City, he grew up in the Bronx. He attended Bronx Science High School, received his BA from Columbia University and his PhD from Boston University. He was a gifted psychotherapist who worked at McLean Hospital, maintained a private practice in Cambridge, MA, taught at Harvard Medical School and mentored many students. Arthur was a man of many talents and interests. Creative and possessing a keen intellect, he loved to read and was a passionate photographer, cook, and art collector. Everywhere, people were drawn to him. And he enjoyed a wild sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Ann and Philip Klein, of the Bronx, NY. He is survived by his two sons, Jared and Oliver Klein of Cambridge, MA and Los Angeles, CA, respectively; by daughter-in-law Ciel Wendel, and by grandchildren Mason and Uma Rose. He is also survived by his sister, Judy Summer of Park City, UT. Memorial services will be held at the Highland Meadows Cemetery, 700 Concord Avenue, Belmont on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Following the service, a gathering will take place at the home of Cynthia Carpenter and Robert Walley at 62 Flett Road in Belmont.

Walter James Cahners (90) of Boston, MA and Wellington, FL, formerly of Brookline, MA and Bangor, ME died peacefully on April 11, 2016 after suffering from multiple long illnesses. He was best friend and devoted protector of his wife Sue (Schwartz) for over 64 years, encouraging, supportive and loving father of Amy Cahners and Catherine Cahners and her husband Dr. Andrew Gillies, proud “Pop” to Nicole and Rachel Hunter and Samantha and Kimberly Gillies, and inseparable from his dog Charlie. Walter was the youngest son of Katherine “Kitty” (Epstein) and James Cahners and beloved youngest brother of the late Charlotte Cahners Harpel Glass, Norman Cahners and Fulton Cahners. age 39, of Andover, Ma , on Thursday April 7, 2016, died from a heart attack while on a business trip to Kiev, Ukraine. Matthew’s love of travel took him all over the world as he focused on business development in many countries, most recently in London, England. Matthew is a graduate of Phillips Academy, Andover and Columbia University, New York. He was a Fulbright Scholar. He will be remembered for his creativity, ingenuity, keen wit and warm heart. He was the dear son of Janice and Gary Goldstein, Andover. He leaves behind his sister, Laura Goldstein and her fiance, Scott Dorfman of Boston and his sister Abbey Goldstein and her husband Jared Moss and nephew, Jacob Moss, of Somerville. She is survived by her children, Linda of Natick, Deborah of Leicester, Kenneth and his wife Jill of Natick, Peter and his wife Elizabeth of Oakton, Virginia, her grandchildren Harry, Samuel, Nathaniel and Benjamin, her loving brother Harold of Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. Barbara was a long-time employee of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and a die hard fan of the Boston Red Sox. Her family and friends will continue to rejoice in the memories of the joy that both brought to her life. Services will be held at Temple Beth Am, 300 Pleasant Street, Framingham, on Wednesday, April 6,2016 at 9:30 am. Howard Richard Ansel passed away peacefully in his Natick home on Sunday, April 3, 2016. He was born in Quincy Massachusetts, the son of the late state senator Julius Ansel and Lillian Karp Ansel.

He is survived by his wife Piera Ceste Ansel and his two daughters, Wendy Ansel of New Mexico and Jodi Ansel and her husband Glenn Kelly of Newton. His son James Ansel predeceased him. He also leaves behind two grandsons Ethan and Dylan Ansel-Kelly, his sister Barbara Ansel Shapiro and her husband Sonny of Stoughton, his niece Donna Donovan of Stoughton, his nephew Dr. Michael Shapiro of Raynham, his sister-in-law Ada Ceste Thompson of Charlton, and his dearest friend John Ciccorello of Natick.

He was a graduate of Roxbury Boys Memorial Class of 1955. He joined the Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1959 and spent a year in Puerto Rico before returning to Massachusetts. He worked as a machinist for most of his life. Music was his special joy, but he also enjoyed sports and the beach. He was a wonderful, thoughtful, loving and kind man. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, co-workers and all who knew him.

Services at King Solomon Memorial Park, 2690 Centre St., West Roxbury, Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 12:00 noon.  To honor his memory, donations may be made to the Baypath Humane Society of Hopkinton to honor his love of animals.

Howard David Hillman- Age 81, on March 2, 2016, after a heroic battle, surrounded by his loved ones. Adored husband of Carol Hillman, brother and brother in law to Connie and Leo Miller, uncle to Wayne, Michael, Regina and Hayley Miller, and Molly Mehlsack, great-uncle to Arianna Grace, Mason Oliver and Jaden Alexander, cousin to Barbara Mehlsack. Howard had a forceful thirst for life and knowledge. He traveled the globe, enjoyed the arts of all kinds as well as good food (especially dessert) and drink. He was a man of many qualities – stubborn, feisty, and a consummate punster, balletomane and opera buff. But most importantly he loved his wife Carol and his family and friends more than anything else. Howard, we all thank you for the years we got to love each other. We will miss you in ways for which there are no words. Carol, Connie and Leo, Michael and Hayley, Wayne and Regina, Nancy and Ken, Molly and Barbara. Abraham “Abe” Shenker

Abe Shenker

Abraham (Abe) Shenker was born on June 11th, 1959 in New York to Lewis Shenker, MD and Cynthia Shenker. He passed away on Sunday, March 27th after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He was a long-term resident of Lexington, MA.

Abe was a true renaissance man and a warm and loving son, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and colleague. Abe graduated from the University of Michigan in 1981 with a degree in computer engineering.  He was a superb software architect and an early developer and proponent of speech recognition software.  He loved to discover and explore new technologies and used them to bring joy to others’ lives. He approached new projects and passions with gusto, including the management of the website at his children’s school on a volunteer basis for many years.

Abe loved cycling, the beach, and spending time with family. His sense of humor and play and his willingness to help others were among his trademarks.

Even after he was diagnosed with cancer, he never gave up hope. He blogged about his treatment, renovated a home in Cape Cod, traveled internationally, and planned Thanksgiving celebrations with family.

Abe is survived by his wife Veronica, his children Sol, Sam, and Abby, his granddaughter Valerie, his brother Andy, sister Nancy and mother Cynthia, and stepchildren Daniel and Joseph.

Service at Wilson Chapel, 234 Herrick Rd., Newton, MA on Sunday, April 3, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Memorial observance at the Shenker/Vedensky residence on Tuesday and Wednesday 6:00-8:00 pm.
