Age 53, died in her home on Sunday, March 6, 2016, of metastatic breast cancer. Gina was born and raised in Chicago and attended the Francis W. Parker School. After high school she moved to Israel, where she studied theater at the Hebrew University, and met her former husband, Ted Miller. After working as a stage manager in New York, Gina settled in Boston, where she raised her children, Zach and Zoe Miller. Here she found her true passion and gift, teaching, both as a high school English teacher and in Jewish congregational schools. In 2001, Gina met her spouse, Rabbi Toba Spitzer, and together they created a loving home first in Lexington and then in Waltham. Gina was a woman of boundless energy and deep compassion and warmth. She had a huge creative spirit, evidenced not only by her teaching, but also by her intricate Sculpy creations, blog writing, blanket-making, complex birthday cakes, and countless published letters to the Globe. But Gina’s true legacy, in addition to her children, was her teaching. She offered her students both learning and love, and that love was reciprocated in fullest measure throughout her career and in her last days. She taught not just literature or Judaism but critical thinking about the world in which we live. She inspired her students to become their best selves and to work for a world free of oppression. For the past 15 years at Weston High School, Gina was devoted to the METCO program, and she worked to make both her classroom and the school community inclusive of diverse views and identities. Her fierce love of her children, deep partnership with her spouse, devotion to her extended family, ability to delight children of all ages, and passionate friendship with so many who loved her, will live on. Sheila Diamond, loving wife and devoted mother of two and grandmother of two, passed away peacefully after a long illness and series of debilitating infections, on February 4, 2016 in hospice care surrounded by her loving family and rabbi at Emerson Hospital in Concord Massachusetts.
Most recently a resident of Chelmsford Massachusetts, Sheila was born in Philadelphia PA on January 29, 1937 where she attended Gratz High School and Temple University.
She moved with her family several times living in Pottsville PA where her children were born, moving to New Castle PA, Battle Creek MI, Blackwood NJ, Cherry Hill NJ, and last to Chelmsford MA.
After her boys – as she referred to them well into their adulthood – completed high school in Cherry Hill she returned to the workforce first as an office manager and then in a role she cherished as the Public Relations and Outreach manager for the Mental Health Association of Southern New Jersey for several years in the 1980s and 1990’s.
She was very well read, a devotee of the classics and modern fiction, with a limitless vocabulary; her favorite novel is Middlemarch by George Elliot which interestingly is set against her favorite detective novels by Ross MacDonald.
Sheila was known for her huge heart, warmth, compassion, sweetness, empathy, kindness, and selflessness. She was a wonderful conversationalist, always conveying an interest in the other person’s story. She was a passionate “antiquer” with a love for enigmatic prints and historic nick knacks that tell a story. She had a quick wit that was touched at times with appealing and sweet natured teasing.
Above all though she often said and always showed that her children and husband were her whole world. Well not entirely her whole world – she loved her corgi dogs too including Mike and MC.

She and her husband started Lynwood Laboratories, a household products business, during the mid-1950’s which continues to this day. Lynwood Laboratories invented Spray-n-Starch, Doris’ idea which Irving developed.
