Sybil (Seltzer) Sherman

October 23, 2013

Sherman Sybil

Sybil (Seltzer) Sherman of Newton, MA passed away peacefully while surrounded by her loving family on October 21st at the age of 90. Sybil was the beloved wife of 56 years to the late Saul A. Sherman. She was the cherished mother of Jane Sherman, Suzanne Sherman-Finnerty and her husband Paul Finnerty, Judy Oriel and her husband Robert; she was the adored Grandmother of Brad Oriel and Amanda Oriel. Sybil was the devoted daughter of the late Arthur and Bessie (Koplovitz) Seltzer. She was pre-deceased by her loving brothers Robert, Albert (his surviving wife Lillian) and Martin (Kip) Seltzer. She was the sister-in-law to the late Libby Seltzer, Dorothy (Sherman) and Edward Shuster, and Charlotte (Sherman) and Kenneth Brenner. . She remained close to her nephews, nieces and special family friends up until the time of her death. , Sybil was a life member of Hadassah and past member of Temple Mishkan Tefila. She was a caring woman who supported many causes over her lifetime. Born in Belmont on June 26, 1923, Sybil was raised in Roxbury. She loved playing baseball with her brothers and even up to the time of death enjoyed watching the Red Sox. She would be elated to know that they won the World Series!!! It was evident from an early age that she would be successful in life. She was the President of her class at Roxbury Memorial High School and later on she achieved the ultimate goal of being one of Newton’s top Real Estate Brokers with a career which spanned over 35 years being known in the day as a ‘kitchen broker’. Being the compassionate, charismatic person that she was, her keen sense of business was ahead of her time. It definitely ran in the family with the success that her brothers had with the florist shop Seltzer’s Garden City that had been located in Newton. It is here that she met many of her clients. No matter where we went, Sybil would be engaged in conversation due to her amicable personality. We always said that she could have been the ‘Mayor of Newton’. Everybody loved Sybil as she was truly a remarkable woman. Her high school yearbook quote of “To know her is to love her” has certainly followed her throughout her lifetime. Many have described our mother as beautiful and elegant, a steadfast friend, kind, sensitive, affectionate, strong leader, role model, a winner, “Sybil was an intelligent force of nature”, “always devoted and proud of her family”, “she always made me smile”, a word, expression, a picture, a song, will always be a oonstant reminder of Sybil that shall not be forgotten. Even after being afflicted with Parkinson’s disease, which she lived with for over thirty years, Sybil never complained and she remained upbeat, humorous and optimistic. She enjoyed each day and lived life to its fullest. She was simply the best. She has our deepest love, respect and admiration. Our mother and best friend has been taken from us but we will treasure all of our memories and she will live in our hearts forever and ever. Services have been held. Nathan R. Miller

October 7, 2013

Nathan Miller, who was 93, continued working at his Beacon Hill office until July.

As a boy, Nathan Miller lived in a modest street-level apartment on Beacon Hill and sold newspapers in downtown Boston and candy bars at Harvard football games.

As an adult, he built a real estate portfolio of commercial properties across Boston. With the fortune he amassed when he sold all the buildings except for 6 Beacon St., he gave back to the city he loved.

“He made a lot of money, but he really grew up a working-class kid in Boston,” said Greg Vasil, chief executive of the Greater Boston Real Estate Board. Vasil added that Mr. Miller liked to stay “under the radar,” despite his wealth and generosity.

“He did a lot, and he gave a lot,” he said. “He did really well for himself, but he wanted to be anonymous. He was the most understated guy in Boston.”

His business, Nathan R. Miller Properties, owned and managed buildings including One State Street, 44 School St., and 18 Tremont St., and Mr. Miller was known for preserving the historic character of older buildings he converted into office space.

Born in 1919, Nathan R. Miller grew up on Myrtle Street. Like many boys in his neighborhood, he spent time at the Burroughs Newsboys Foundation at 10 Somerset St., where children who delivered newspapers or practiced other trades were welcomed two days and two evenings a week for recreational activities, plus a free movie every Friday night.

In 2005, he gave Suffolk University $2 million to buy the Burroughs site and convert it into a residence hall. Today the 19-story Nathan R. Miller Residence Hall is home to 345 students. His gift also pays full tuition for 11 Boston public school graduates each year.

“Many of those students have been proud to call our campus’s Nathan R. Miller Residence home,” James McCarthy, Suffolk University’s president, said in a statement. “Nathan Miller cared deeply about education and building bright futures.’’

After graduating from English High School of Boston, Mr. Miller received an accounting degree in 1939 from what is now Bentley University. Years later, he donated funds so his alma mater could build a residence hall and a career center.

Mr. Miller married Lillian Litvack in 1941. They met when a friend brought him to a party she was hosting. She died in 2012.

In 1943, Mr. Miller enlisted in the US Army. After World War II, he returned to Boston and remained in the Army Reserve for about a decade, said his daughter, Barbara Sidel of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

He founded a small accounting firm at 6 Beacon St., which he transformed into a real estate business. He bought the building, his first commercial property. It is still home to his business today.

“He always viewed Beacon Hill as indestructible,” said Vasil, who met Mr. Miller when he rented space in one of his buildings. “He’d say, ‘It’s on a hill; it will never flood.’ And he said it would always be in demand, because there would always be clientele clamoring for space near the government entities.”

Over lunches, Vasil said, “I learned life lessons from him, about the city, about politics. He loved to talk face to face. He did business the old-fashioned way.”

Mr. Miller, Vasil said, was always concerned about “how people were going to make ends meet.”

“With all the money he had, he’d still say: ‘Have you seen the price of grapefruit? Look at the price of gas, isn’t it terrible?’ Usually people like him get to the point where they’re oblivious about all that,” Vasil said.

Early in his career, Mr. Miller bought rooming houses and apartment houses. His daughter recalled accompanying him on rent-collecting rounds on Saturday mornings.

“He always got up early in the mornings to make breakfast for me,” she said. “He worked so hard during the week that whenever he had time to spend with me, he did.”

Mr. Miller’s family said he believed in giving back to the city where he had become successful. A room at the BSO, where he served on the board, is named for him. He funded an intensive-care unit and lobby at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, which bear his name.

He served as chairman of the board of Agassiz Village in Poland, Maine, a camp he attended as a child that was affiliated with the Burroughs Newsboys Foundation. He funded a lodge for camp staff.

He and his family had homes in Harwich and in Palm Beach, Fla., where he contributed to many area organizations, such as Good Samaritan Medical Center and the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, both in West Palm Beach.

Bentley and Suffolk each awarded an honorary degree to Mr. Miller. During a ceremony to commemorate the Suffolk residence hall opening in 2005, he spoke about the location’s significance to him and praised the school for preserving its buildings.

“I am told that I am successful,” he said. “I’m not sure I know what that means, because life’s success is not measured by dollars alone. If success is having a loving and supporting wife for more than 60 years, a marvelous daughter, granddaughters, and great-grandchildren, then I am truly successful. If it is having the opportunity to give to others and be part of the wonderful community that we live in, then I am successful.”

Angie O’Keefe, a property administrator who had worked with Mr. Miller since 2002, described him as “extremely business-minded, but very kind.”

“When he was working, business was business,” she said. “But you could also see his other side, a light-hearted, fun side. He was very kind and very fair, a real self-made man.”

A service has been held for Mr. Miller, who in addition to his daughter, leaves two granddaughters and four great-grandchildren.

Most mornings, O’Keefe said, Mr. Miller was at the office by 5 a.m. “The joke was that the superintendent would walk up the street from the train station and he could see the light on in Mr. Miller’s office,” she said, adding that “he loved Boston until the very end. He would just look out the window and say, ‘What a beautiful city. There is no place I would rather be.’”

Joseph Braunstein

Joseph Braunstein, 84; bankruptcy attorney, mentor for young lawyers

By Michele Richinick

|  GLOBE CORRESPONDENT  NOVEMBER 05, 2013

Mr. Braunstein received the Boston Bar Association’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mr. Braunstein received the Boston Bar Association’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.

In the law offices where he handled bankruptcy cases during a career that spanned more than 55 years, Joseph Braunstein spoke with colleagues and staff about any number of topics that had nothing to do with legal work, from tomato plants to model airplanes.

“He had that talent of remembering what everyone’s interest was and had such a nice, open and friendly way about him that he always connected with people,” said Stanley Riemer, a managing partner at Mr. Braunstein’s firm who knew him for four decades or more.

When Mr. Braunstein and his family went out to dinner, it was difficult for his wife and children to finish a meal without interruptions because he often stepped away to greet friends and colleagues who entered the restaurant.

“We could barely eat with them,” said his son Barry of Weston.

Mr. Braunstein, a longtime senior partner at Riemer & Braunstein, died of a heart attack Sept. 25 near his home in Boynton Beach, Fla. He was 84 and before moving recently to Chestnut Hill had lived for many years in Weston, and for years spent part of his time in Florida.

‘He expected a high level of performance from people and expected it of himself at all times.’

In 1998, the Boston Bar Association recognized Mr. Braunstein for his work in bankruptcy law with the organization’s first Lifetime Achievement Award.

“I just do my job, do my work, and it’s gratifying to see how well recognized it is,” Mr. Braunstein told the Boston Business Journal after receiving the award.

The late M. Ellen Carpenter, a respected bankruptcy lawyer who at the time chaired the association’s bankruptcy law committee, told the journal at the time of the award that Mr. Braunstein was “someone who the young attorneys watch in the courtroom and can learn a lot from.”

During the 1970s, Mr. Braunstein became a key partner at Cohn, Riemer & Pollack and the longtime head of its bankruptcy department. The firm became Riemer & Braunstein in 1979.

He was “tremendously successful” as a bankruptcy lawyer and was a role model for other attorneys, Riemer said. Mr. Braunstein, he added, enjoyed being a teacher and mentor to new attorneys who joined the firm.

“He expected a high level of performance from people and expected it of himself at all times,” Riemer said.

Mr. Braunstein was born in New Bedford and grew up in Newton, where he graduated from Newton High School.

He received a bachelor’s degree from Suffolk University in 1950 and subsequently graduated from what is now called New England Law, Boston.

Mr. Braunstein was young when his father died. Afterward, he thought of his future father-in-law and Newton neighbor, Ralph Cohn, as a mentor and role model during his teenage years. He married Cohn’s daughter, Sally, in 1951.

During the early 1960s, the couple began living in Newton, where they raised their three sons, all of whom became lawyers, before moving to Weston during the late 1970s.

More recently, they moved to Chestnut Hill. Over the years, Mr. Braunstein would only spend weekends in Florida during some months in order to accommodate his wife’s work schedule.

In 1953, Mr. Braunstein began his law career as a traditional collection attorney at Cohn, Riemer & Pollack. He left the firm briefly to establish his own law practice in Essex County before returning to Boston, where he worked for the rest of his career.

“In a sometimes harsh environment, everyone had just praise for him,” said his son, who is a senior partner at Riemer & Braunstein. “I think it’s just the way he treated people.”

A service has been held for Mr. Braunstein, who in addition to his wife and son Barry leaves two other sons, Alan of South Natick and Ron of New York City; a brother, Robert of Sharon; and seven grandchildren.

Away from work, Mr. Braunstein liked to go golfing with his wife and fly radio-controlled planes with friends.

“He saw people for what they were,” his son Barry said. “He was an everyman’s person.”

Mr. Braunstein never retired. He served as a court-appointed bankruptcy trustee and was affiliated with the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, and the Massachusetts Bar Association.

He was elected to the American College of Bankruptcy, for which he was a member of the pro bono committee.

“He was praised by judges for being incredibly deferential to anybody,” his son said. “He treated everyone with caring, kindness, [and] thoughtfulness.”
