WORCESTER – Lester Katz was born to Joseph & Anna M. (Dworman) Katz on May 3, 1923 in Worcester, and died at Jewish Healthcare Center on Thursday December 27th.
He is predeceased by his brother Milton and son Steven and is survived by his wife of 63 years Florence (Lisabitsky); his sister Doris Goff, his daughters Judith and Nancy, daughter-in-law Joey O’Connor-Katz, grandson Jordan O’Connor-Katz, son-in-law Mark Liebowitz, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lester lost both his father & his brother Milton at young ages and maintained a strong sense of responsibility to their surviving family members. He was a hard working, generous and loyal ‘famiy man’ with an insatiable love of life.
Lester’s career in the grocery business started out at his parents’ corner grocery store in Worcester’s Main South neighborhood. After World War II, where he served as a corporal in the communicaitons corp, he returned to start and run a small chain of food markets with his brother Milton and Mitchell & Phillip Sobel – beginning with Food Farm in Shrewsbury and later with IGA stores in Hudson and Marlboro, Massachusetts. Lester always held a strong loyalty and commitment to both his customers and employees.
Though Lester lived his entire life in Worcester, he and Florence traveled extensively throughout the world. Prior to visiting a destination he did thorough research to orient himself to its history & Culture. He regretted that the one continent he had neglected to visit was Africa. The situation was remedied somewhat during the last year of his life when he was blessed with the companionship of Mary Ampadu & Dorcas Sarpong from Ghana, and to Gabriel Kioi from Kenya, who shared their culture, their love, and their families with him and his.
He loved live theater and classical music. He enjoyed attending performances locally, in Boston, New York, and at Tanglewood. He believed strongly in exercise and for many years was seen walking around Tatnuck Square early in the day. Later, upon moving to the Eisenberg Assisted LIving, he continued an active pursuit of early morning exercise at the JCC next door, an inspiration to one and all.
Lester had an interest and curiosity about people. He had relationships with folks from all walks of life and maintained several friendships over eight decades. Lester was self educated and was an avid reader of non-fiction. He thoroughly read the New York Times daily. Lester was a member of the Worcester Art Museum and served briefly as a docent upon retirement. Over the years he acquired his own extensive collection and became somewhat of an expert of antique Asian art. He was also active in Rotary International & a proud member of both B’nai Brith and Jewish War Veterans.
Lester was a staunch supporter of President Obama. His intellect and sense of humor remained intact until the end of his life. When asked if he was comfortable, his response was alway, “I have a few bucks.”
Lester’s family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of the Eisenberg, Jewish Healthcare Center, JHC Hospice, and to Dr. Frank Domino for love and care over the years. They suggest making donations in Lester’s memory to the charity of one’s choosing.
