Dr. Aaron Miller

October 25, 2016

aaron-miller

age 94, of Newton, died peacefully at home on Monday, October 10th.  A respected physician and researcher for 38 years, he was a mentor to many hematologists in the Boston area and touched the lives of thousands of patients. In addition to his professional work, he was an avid tomato gardener, walker, and tennis player, playing well into his seventies.

Aaron was born in 1922 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of immigrants from Russia and Poland. He attended City College of New York where he played varsity basketball on the college’s nationally ranked team.  He served in the Army during World War II and was a medic in the 30th Infantry Division, known as “Old Hickory”.  He landed in Normandy five days after D-Day and saw action in France and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge.  He was awarded the Silver Star, the nation’s third highest military decoration for valor, a distinction that he humbly and self-effacingly referred to as “a mistake”.

After the war Aaron attended medical school at the University of Rochester, and completed his residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Jamaica Plain. He practiced medicine at the VA Hospital for his entire career and also held a faculty appointment at Boston University School of Medicine.

In 1949 Aaron married Marilyn Barlin, also from Brooklyn. They met at the Laurels Hotel and Country Club in the Catskills where they both worked during the summer of 1943.  She shared his passion for literature, music, movies.  They spent many days walking in Newton with a special fondness for Crystal Lake, Bullough’s Pond, and the former Weeks Junior High School.

Dr. Miller was a hematologist and did important research on vitamin B12 absorption in the body, among other things. He was part of a research team at the VA that made many contributions to the fields of hematology and oncology.

Dr. Miller is survived by Marilyn, his wife of 67 years, his daughter Julie and her husband Paul Dansereau of Boston, his sister, Beatrice Donovan of Evanston, Illinois, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

“In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association or to Doctors Without Borders. A memorial service for Dr. Miller will be held at the First Parish of Watertown, 35 Church Street, Watertown, MA on Sunday, November 13 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a reception immediately following the service at the Miller residence in Newton.“

Ed L. Richmond

October 21, 2016

Ed Richmond was born in Boston on July 17, 1926, to Herman Richmond and Rhoda (Beggelman) Richmond. He is predeceased by his parents, his sister Midge Nathanson of Newton, and his son Ron Richmond of Concord. He is survived by his devoted wife Lisa (Liss) Richmond, his brother Yale Richmond and his wife Phyllis Gestrin of Washington, D.C., his children Angel (Wendy) Richmond of Winchester, Stephen Richmond and wife Julie Weinstein of Sudbury, William (Billy) Richmond and wife Cher Richmond of Madison, Connecticut, and daughter in law Ha (Nguyen) Richmond of Concord, and his grandchildren Ben, Jordan, Cameron, Ian, Kijana, Dylan, Ethan, Mai and Tal.

Ed graduated from Boston College with Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees, and then from Boston College Law School with a Juris Doctor degree. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was discharged with the rank of Ensign.

Ed practiced law for 40 years, first in Boston at the firms of Bloom, Deutsch & Richmond, and Richmond, Kassler, Feinberg & Feuer, and later as a sole practitioner in Newton Centre. As a lawyer, Ed was passionate about his charitable and pro bono work. He served as chairperson of the Newton Committee for Fair Housing and Equal Rights, chairperson of the Social Action Committee and member of the Board of Trustees of Temple Israel in Boston, director of the Simons-Gutman Charitable Foundation, member of the Executive Board of the Newton Community Peace Center, member of the Board of Governors of the Newton Art Center, and an active member of the Rehabilitation Services Committee.

Ed handled many pro bono legal cases throughout his career, and in perhaps his favorite case he won the unconditional release of an inmate who had previously been charged with committing a serious offense and, without ever having been offered a trial, had been locked up for 36 years in an institution for the insane. Upon securing his release, he walked the man from the courthouse into freedom, and he loved to tell how his client seemed like Rip Van Winkle, amazed by the cars, tall buildings and revealing clothing.

Perhaps his fondest professional memories were of his fourteen years of service as Alderman in the City of Newton. Ed loved politics and he was proud of being an activist. He served on almost every aldermanic committee, including as Chairman of the City’s Finance Committee for eight years, and Chairman of the Education Committee, Public Buildings Committee, and Committee on Cable Communications. He was particularly proud of having drafted and co-sponsored the ordinances which created the City’s Cultural Affairs Commission and Urban Beautification Commission, and numerous land use ordinances that controlled commercial growth in the City.

Jeremy Spencer Linn Walters

October 8, 2016

Jeremy Spencer Linn Walters, 16, cherished son of Kimberely Mead-Walters and F. Davis Walters of Orleans, died unexpectedly on October 6, 2016.

Jeremy, or “Jez,” was born in Falmouth, MA on January 26, 2000. Jeremy overcame extreme prematurity and its related medical issues, worked diligently on his social skills to lessen the impact of Aspergers on his daily life, and entertained us all with his brilliant mind, sarcastic remarks, wonderful sense of humor and spontaneous facts from an incredibly diverse fund of knowledge. He loved his family and his German Shepherd, Mike Wazowski, dearly, but ultimately was overcome by severe depression.

Jez was a junior at Nauset Regional High School, and had successfully completed a Hurricane Island Outward Bound Course this past August. Jeremy loved history and American Sign Language, and would frequently sign his way through the day. Recently, he added voice lessons to his ever-increasing quest for new skills and fortunately for all of us, sang constantly. Jeremy loved being outdoors, whether walking trails with Mike, swimming at Crystal Lake or the outer beach, or practicing his wilderness skills. Jeremy also loved being on his computer, where he constantly sought new knowledge of all types. We will always remember his tireless enthusiasm for sharing what he had learned.

Jeremy will be greatly missed by his parents, Kim and Davis, his brothers Kyle and Samuel Walters, his sister and brother-in-law, Madelyn and Jason Wheeler, and also by his grandparents James Mead (Leona Grant) and Dorothy “Delilah” Walters and multiple aunts, uncles and Mead, McEnaney and Nelson cousins.

Jeremy was always a generous soul, especially with his beautiful smile and loving hugs. In keeping with his wishes, as he was a registered organ donor, many other lives were saved this week, because of his kind nature and willingness to give selflessly.

A celebration of Jeremy’s life will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016, at 2:00 PM, at the Federated Church of Orleans.

A scholarship fund has been established in Jeremy’s name. Kindly submit donations to the Jeremy Walters Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of: The Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank, PO Box 86, Orleans, MA, 02653.
