Sara (Hoffman) Miller WORCESTER- Sara (Hoffman) Miller, age 91, formerly of Worcester, died on Wednesday, Nov. 14th in Naples, Florida after an illness. She was the wife of the late Louis Miller, who died in 1980. She leaves two sons: Mark Miller and his wife Sandy of Atkinson, NH with whom she lived for 10 years and Paul Miller of Naples, FL a daughter, Jill wife of Louis Broccoletti of Naples, FL and her grand-daughters: Lucy Miller and Sydney Miller of Atkinson, NH and Alecia Miller of Shrewsbury and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers: John, Jacob, Samuel and Albert Hoffman and by her nephews: Abbie Hoffman and Bruce Hoffman. She was born in Worcester and was the daughter of Morris and Anna (Kanef) Hoffman and had moved to Naples, FL 3 years ago. She graduated from Commerce High School and from a secretarial school. During World War II she was a graduate of the first Red Cross Nurses Aides Classes and became a volunteer nurse’s aide at St. Vincent Hospital serving more than 1,000 hours. She had worked many hours as secretary to the Emergency Command Center of Vital Services. She was a longtime member of Temple Emanuel and she had taught at its Religious School and its Nursery School for 18 years. She had worked as a secretary and office manager for the Building Fund of the Jewish Home for Aged, continuing on at various positions at the Jewish Healthcare Center, for a total of 27 years, retiring in 1999. She was a Past President, Donor Chairman, Treasurer and Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Jewish Healthcare Center as well as a Vice President of the Jewish Healthcare Center. She had also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Service Center for Older Adults, Bet Shalom and the Jewish Healthcare Center. While living in New Hampshire, she was an active volunteer at the Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, MA and at the Atkinson, N.H. Academy. GRAVESIDE FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at NOON on FRIDAY NOV. 16TH in B’NAI BRITH CEMETERY on ST. JOHN’S RD. UNDER THE DIRECTION of RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON. Dr. Barry D. Lang

November 3, 2012

Lang, Barry D. 68 of Newton, MA formerly of Dartmouth passed away peacefully at home on November 3, 2012, after a courageous and inspirational battle with cancer. Barry was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Oceanside, Long Island. He attended Syracuse University, where he met Janet, the love of his life. Barry and Janet were married November 23, 1966 and remained in Syracuse while Barry attended medical school at SUNY Upstate. From there, they made their way to Philadelphia where Barry completed his fellowship at Temple Hospital and Shriner’s Hospital. While in Philadelphia, Barry and Janet welcomed their three children into this world and from that day forward, they were Barry’s pride and joy, sponges onto which he imparted his wisdom, love and guidance. Upon moving to Dartmouth, MA, Barry went into private orthopedic practice in New Bedford. After 24 years of practice, Barry, ever the scholar, attended Southern New England School of Law. After practicing both fields for a few years, Barry gave up the practice of medicine to give all of his attention to the field of law and moved to Newton to start a medical malpractice law firm in Boston. In his later years, Barry became an avid student of Torah, Judaism and the Hebrew language. Throughout his life, Barry generously shared his knowledge, vibrancy and love with all who had the privilege to know him. Barry is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Janet, His daughter Kiran and her husband Jeff Milunsky, his daughter Brittany and her husband Michael Smith, his son Zach, and his grandchildren, Julie, Miranda, Cody and soon to enter the family, baby boy Smith. Services will be at Temple Beth Avodah, (45 Puddingstone Ln., Newton, MA) on Monday, November 5, 2012 at 11:00 am. Following interment at the Independent Pride of Boston Cemetery (West Roxbury, MA), memorial observance will be held at his late residence until 5 pm and 7-9 pm with a Minyan service at 7:30 pm and will continue Tuesday and Wednesday 2-4 and 7-9 pm. It was Barry’s wish that donations may be made to Hadassah, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America Stem Cell Research, 50 West 58th Street, New York, NY 10019. Lawrence (Larry) Vodkin of Bridgewater passed away at his home on November 2,2012. He is the son of the late Hyman and Eva Vodkin. He is survived by his loving sister, Linda Vodkin and his devoted brother, Michael, and Michael’s wife, Lila, from Champaign, IL.

Larry was born in Boston on May 31, 1947 and spent his formative years in Dorchester. He graduated from the Solomon Lewenberg Middle School and Boston English High School. He was a long-term mail carrier for the US Post Office and served 3 elected terms there as the Shop Steward to represent his fellow workers.

Isadore W. Golub WORCESTER – Isadore W. Golub, 99, died at Beaumont Nursing Home at Natick on Monday, October 29th. His wife, Sylvia (Steigman) Golub died in 2002. He leaves three daughters: Sheila wife of Les Bebchick of Framingham, with whom he lived for ten years; Paula Tigar of Lynnfield and Bella Golub of Deal, NJ; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers: Charles and William and by his sisters: Betty and Sarah. He was born in Worcester, a son of Aaron and Ida (Brodofsky) Golub and had lived in Worcester for 73 years before moving to Framingham for 10 years and to Natick a year ago. With his brother Charles, he owned and operated the Green Street Market for 73 years before retiring 11 years ago. He was an Air force Veteran of World War II. He was a long time member of Temple Emanuel and the Jewish War Veterans in Worcester and the Framingham Natick Jewish War Veterans. Marilyn Minevitz, 85, passed away on October 22, 2012. Loving wife of the late Albert Minevitz, devoted mother of Bruce Minevitz of Hingham and Nancy Minevitz of Brookline. Dear grandmother of Ned and Jake Minevitz. Loving sister of the late Carol Harrison and aunt to Bonnie Wheelwright of Andover and Scott Harrison of Quincy. Niece of beloved aunt, Bella Goldstein, of Boston. Dear companion of Leonard Colten of Hull. She found great comfort in the support of her devoted friends Terri Cook, Adrienne Anastos, Lois Panetsos and Ginnie Capo as well as the caring staff of the Harbor House in Hingham where she spent her final years. Marilyn was a graduate of the Beth Israel Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949 where she won the Ernestine Spitz Prager Prize. She valiantly inoculated hundreds of school children against polio during the 1950’s epidemic. She later served as a school nurse in her hometown of Hull.
She was an inspiration to her friends – always positive, radiant, and a trusted confidant who could keep a secret and avoid drama. An avid reader, world traveler, and aficionado of a good Broadway musical preceded by a delightful dinner. Interment on Thursday October 25 – 3:00 PM at Hull Village Cemetery will be private. Friends are cordially invited to attend a Celebration of Life gathering on Thursday October 25, 2012 at Tosca, 14 North Street, Hingham from 4:30 to 7:00 PM. MARY J. (SPINA)
Of Belmont, MA, and formerly of Pittsburgh, PA, on October 19, 2012. Death came quietly at home, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Beloved wife of Dr. Jack L. Paradise; loving mother of the late Della (Collins) Moore; and devoted stepmother of Dr. Jan Paradise of Newton, MA, Julia Paradise of Washington, DC, Emily Paradise of Arlington, MA, and the late Daniel Paradise; loving sister of Antonette Colvin of Columbia, SC, and the late Mauro, John, Nicholas, and Frank Spina. Mary was born in Morgantown, WV to Italian immigrants Louise and Pietro Spina on March 1, 1926. At the age of 50, after a career as an administrative assistant, most recently at Montefiore University Hospital, she entered the University of Pittsburgh, later graduating with a degree in art history and American literature. In 1983, as the Cold War continued between the United States and the Soviet Union, Mary led a group of Pittsburgh women in establishing the Pennsylvania chapter of Peace Links, an organization of women led nationally by the wives of U.S. members of Congress and committed to promoting peaceful alternatives to nuclear war. Among those leaders were Teresa Heinz and Joan Specter, wives of then Pennsylvania Senators John Heinz and Arlen Specter. Mary served first as founding president of Pennsylvania Peace Links, and later as a board member until she became ill in 1997. On another front, in 1991 after campaigning with other residents in an unsuccessful bid to prevent demolition of the historic Syria Mosque in Oakland, Mary founded and for several years served as president of the nonprofit organization Preservation Pittsburgh, which continues to the present its mission to preserve and protect historic Pittsburgh architectural landmarks. Apart from her leadership skills and her social consciousness, Mary’s kindness and graciousness were legendary, and will long be remembered by the many friends and associates who enjoyed her hospitality. Interment at West View cemetery, Pittsburgh, PA will be private, but a Memorial Service will be scheduled in the near future. SHAPIRORuth Gordon Shapiro- Of Palm Beach, Florida, formerly of Boston, MA died peacefully on Sunday, October 14, 2012, at 95, surrounded by her devoted husband and loving family. Born in Chelsea on April 3, 1917 to Dorothy and George Gordon and raised there, Mrs. Shapiro was a 1937 graduate of Wellesley College where she majored in music, a gift she nurtured and embraced her entire life. Mrs. Shapiro’s passions wove together into a tapestry of devotion to giving to underserved communities and programs, and to helping those in need. She and her husband, Carl Shapiro, were a partnership in the truest sense. Dedicated to family and to each other they shared a commitment to philanthropy and supported many of the major cultural, medical and educational institutions in Boston and Palm Beach County, FL. Courageous in the face of long-standing medical challenges, elegant, smart and caring Mrs. Shapiro provided the quiet strength that held her close knit family together. She also inspired her children and grandchildren to support efforts in the areas she held dear: art, music and education. She led by example through the years; as a talented pianist, she volunteered her time to teach underprivileged children at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She leaves her beloved husband of 73 years, Carl Shapiro, her daughters Rhonda Zinner (Michael), Ellen Jaffe (Robert) and Linda Waintrup (Daniel), her grandchildren Jennifer Herman (Mark), Jonathan Segal, Steven (Jenna), Michael and Andrew (Allyson) Jaffe, Samantha and Kimberly Strauss, six great grandchildren and her brother Roger Gordon (Naomi). She was predeceased by her sister Audrey Rosenberg (Alan). The organizations that Mr. and Mrs. Shapiro have supported include Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Medical Center, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Palm Beach Opera, the Norton Museum of Art and the Kravis Center also in Palm Beach, Wellesley College and Brandeis University to which they made their first contribution in 1950 of $10_all they could afford at the time. “The kitchen table in our home became the family foundation’s board room,” said daughter, Ronny Zinner, “that’s where my parents decided how and where they could make the greatest impact on the lives of others. My sisters and I were blessed to be raised by a father and mother whose values taught us the importance of doing all you can to try and make a difference.” In addition, Mrs. Shapiro and her husband were committed to ameliorating the lives of the disabled and underserved in the Boston area. To that end they funded many community based non-profits devoted to improving the lives and future possibilities for those most in need. Shirley A.( Askin) Mason, age 90 of Framingham, on October 10, 2012.
Born and raised in Framingham, she was a member of the Framingham High School class of 1939 and graduate of the Framingham State Teachers College class of 1943. She taught at the Roosevelt School in Framingham until 1948 when she and Arthur M. Mason, also a member of the Framingham High School class of 1939, were married. They resided in Framingham and raised their two sons, Dana and Peter, after which she resumed her teaching career and was for many years teaching at the Merriam McCarthy School in Framingham in the then Title 1 program. She was active in Haddassah and Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood, as well as other community organizations. She is also a founding member of the Danforth Museum in Framingham.

Paresky, Joseph Malcom, 85, Family man, of Marblehead MA and formerly of Framingham, and Weston. A World War II veteran, passed away from a slow, rare cancer on October 4, 2012. He was the son of the late Ruth (Singer) and Herbert Paresky and was predeceased by a younger brother, Pete (Perley). Mr. Paresky was a heavy electrical construction materials New England sales representative, and a hobbyist artisan furniture-maker, photographer, and fisherman. He was also a big band trumpet-player.

Loving dad to four sons: CPA and Paresky-Flitt co-owner Lee, (New Yorker) Richie, and Gary, both in sales, and entrepreneur Paul, and mates. Their mother of blessed memory, New York raised Elinor (Wolfe), passed away 40 years ago, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was a fashion associate with Cyreld’s of Brookline.

Thirty-eight years ago Mr. Paresky married Carol Ann (Spiller) Reines, a writing coach, and adult author he had met in early teen years, and was dear Papa to her four: Drs. Eric and Brandon Reines (Pittsburgh), and daughters: Educator Rachelle Hall and Real Estate Broker and Children’s Author Jeana Kahn, and mates. Also, they share 16 beloved grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

WORCESTER – Raymond Covitz, 90, of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 3rd surrounded by his family.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Israel and Lena (Palley) Covitz and was a lifelong resident.
His loving wife, Joyce (Zimmerman) Covitz died in 2006. He leaves his three daughters, Judy B. Lindberg and Kathy R. wife of Kip Harrity, both of Worcester and Norma L. Goldberg of Framingham; four grandchildren, Jessie Lindberg, Rachel Kodra, Philip Harrity and William Harrity; four great grandchildren, Alyssa and Austin Lindberg and Patrick and Benjamin Kodra. He was predeceased by his grandson, Noah Joseph Lindberg and by his sister, Esther Freeman.
Raymond grew up in Worcester and graduated Classical High School. He attended Boston University Business School. He left school to serve as a first Lieutenant in the Air Force, during World War II, flying numerous and dangerous missions in Europe.
After serving his country, he married the love of his life, Joyce and worked with his father in the family tobacco business, Bay State Tobacco Company. One of Raymond’s greatest accomplishments was serving as the National President of the National Candy Wholesalers Association. When the business closed in 1980, he continued to work within the industry at J. Polep Company and AMD of Northbridge, until his retirement in 2009.
Raymond’s interest included reading, playing golf, gardening and watching sports on television.
Although Raymond was quiet in nature, he will be truly missed by all whose lives he touched.
His family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to all of his doctors, medical staff and aides for their professional and tireless care.
FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at 11 AM, TODAY, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4TH in TEMPLE EMANUEL, 280 MAY ST., WORCESTER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery.

SHUCHAT–Molly. With great sadness we mourn the death on September 26, 2012 of Molly Shuchat, 95, of Jamaica Plain, MA formerly of Deerfield Beach, FL and Bayside, NY. She was the beloved mother of Alan (Alix) and Jeffrey (Jackie); cherished wife to Morris who predeceased her by seven years; adored grandmother of Mark, Allison, Vera, and Jake; and revered great-grandmother to Harry and Xiao-Ling. Molly will be remembered as a treasured teacher of mathematics by her many students.Molly was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States via Canada. She met Morris (Red) when she was fifteen years old. After a five year engagement they were married for sixty-five years. They raised two sons and cared for her mother. They traveled and enjoyed life through their diverse interests: Jewish studies and music; square dancing; shell gathering, Broadway, and opera together; craft work for Red and baking and bridge for Molly. Molly had a musical laugh, an inquisitive and sharp mind, and the ability to be forthright, genuine, and decent. She saw the world through a glass half-filled. Those of us fortunate enough to have loved her and be loved by her will miss her for the rest of our lives.

Douglas L. Burwick, aka “Dougie Fresh”, 66, of 14 Shepard Lane, Shrewsbury, died on Thursday, September 20th in UMass Memorial Healthcare after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 37 years, Tina (Turpin) Burwick; two sons, Max Burwick of Worcester and Zack Burwick of Boston; two daughters, Leigh wife of Matt Fawcett of Northboro and Jocelyn Burwick of Boston; his mother, Muriel (Kirschner) Burwick of Worcester; two brothers, David Burwick and his wife Robin of Millbury and Carl Burwick of Worcester; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Nate Fawcett. He was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey N. Burwick.
He was born in Worcester and was a son of the late I. Tutter Burwick and had lived in Shrewsbury the past 37 years.
He graduated from University of Pennsylvania and from Boston University Law School. He was a partner in the law firm of Burwick and Dynice in Leominster. He was on the Executive Board of the Worcester County Bar Association for many years.
He had a unique sense of humor. He was basically a big kid who loved his toys and gadgets. He lived and died by his Boston sports teams. He was a phenominal sports enthusiast. He loved spending time at the Cape with his family. His greatest joy and reasons for fighting his courageous battle against cancer, was to see his grandchildren Ryan and Nate.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD at 1 PM on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24TH in TEMPLE SINAI, 661 SALISBURY ST., WORCESTER, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery.
Memorial Observance will be held on Monday Afternoon, September 24th at Temple Sinai, 661 Salisbury St., Worcester.
