Joseph Malcom Paresky

Paresky, Joseph Malcom, 85, Family man, of Marblehead MA and formerly of Framingham, and Weston. A World War II veteran, passed away from a slow, rare cancer on October 4, 2012. He was the son of the late Ruth (Singer) and Herbert Paresky and was predeceased by a younger brother, Pete (Perley). Mr. Paresky was a heavy electrical construction materials New England sales representative, and a hobbyist artisan furniture-maker, photographer, and fisherman. He was also a big band trumpet-player.

Loving dad to four sons: CPA and Paresky-Flitt co-owner Lee, (New Yorker) Richie, and Gary, both in sales, and entrepreneur Paul, and mates. Their mother of blessed memory, New York raised Elinor (Wolfe), passed away 40 years ago, after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was a fashion associate with Cyreld’s of Brookline.

Thirty-eight years ago Mr. Paresky married Carol Ann (Spiller) Reines, a writing coach, and adult author he had met in early teen years, and was dear Papa to her four: Drs. Eric and Brandon Reines (Pittsburgh), and daughters: Educator Rachelle Hall and Real Estate Broker and Children’s Author Jeana Kahn, and mates. Also, they share 16 beloved grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services at Temple Sinai Cemetery, (Danvers, MA), on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 11:00 am. Following services the family has welcomed friends to a memorial observance at his late residence. Raymond Covitz

WORCESTER – Raymond Covitz, 90, of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, October 3rd surrounded by his family.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Israel and Lena (Palley) Covitz and was a lifelong resident.
His loving wife, Joyce (Zimmerman) Covitz died in 2006. He leaves his three daughters, Judy B. Lindberg and Kathy R. wife of Kip Harrity, both of Worcester and Norma L. Goldberg of Framingham; four grandchildren, Jessie Lindberg, Rachel Kodra, Philip Harrity and William Harrity; four great grandchildren, Alyssa and Austin Lindberg and Patrick and Benjamin Kodra. He was predeceased by his grandson, Noah Joseph Lindberg and by his sister, Esther Freeman.
Raymond grew up in Worcester and graduated Classical High School. He attended Boston University Business School. He left school to serve as a first Lieutenant in the Air Force, during World War II, flying numerous and dangerous missions in Europe.
After serving his country, he married the love of his life, Joyce and worked with his father in the family tobacco business, Bay State Tobacco Company. One of Raymond’s greatest accomplishments was serving as the National President of the National Candy Wholesalers Association. When the business closed in 1980, he continued to work within the industry at J. Polep Company and AMD of Northbridge, until his retirement in 2009.
Raymond’s interest included reading, playing golf, gardening and watching sports on television.
Although Raymond was quiet in nature, he will be truly missed by all whose lives he touched.
His family would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to all of his doctors, medical staff and aides for their professional and tireless care.
FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at 11 AM, TODAY, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4TH in TEMPLE EMANUEL, 280 MAY ST., WORCESTER UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery.
Memorial Observance will be held at his residence at 61 Ashmore Rd. through 4 PM Friday, 6:30 PM to 9 PM on Saturday AND 2 PM to 4 PM on Sunday.

SHUCHAT–Molly. With great sadness we mourn the death on September 26, 2012 of Molly Shuchat, 95, of Jamaica Plain, MA formerly of Deerfield Beach, FL and Bayside, NY. She was the beloved mother of Alan (Alix) and Jeffrey (Jackie); cherished wife to Morris who predeceased her by seven years; adored grandmother of Mark, Allison, Vera, and Jake; and revered great-grandmother to Harry and Xiao-Ling. Molly will be remembered as a treasured teacher of mathematics by her many students.Molly was born in Russia and emigrated to the United States via Canada. She met Morris (Red) when she was fifteen years old. After a five year engagement they were married for sixty-five years. They raised two sons and cared for her mother. They traveled and enjoyed life through their diverse interests: Jewish studies and music; square dancing; shell gathering, Broadway, and opera together; craft work for Red and baking and bridge for Molly. Molly had a musical laugh, an inquisitive and sharp mind, and the ability to be forthright, genuine, and decent. She saw the world through a glass half-filled. Those of us fortunate enough to have loved her and be loved by her will miss her for the rest of our lives.

An avid pianist, Louise considered a career in music before becoming a homemaker, businessperson as owner of Beacon Secretarial Service in Brookline, and energetic president of her condominium association. She was the beloved wife of the late Morris Katzeff and Charlie Katz; loving mother of Anne Katzeff and her partner Peggy, of Carl Katzeff and his wife Susan, and of Paul Katzeff and his wife Janet; devoted grandmother of Michael; dedicated sister of the late Gloria Sansom and her husband Sandy; and devoted to her many cousins. Douglas L. Burwick, aka “Dougie Fresh”, 66, of 14 Shepard Lane, Shrewsbury, died on Thursday, September 20th in UMass Memorial Healthcare after an illness.
He leaves his wife of 37 years, Tina (Turpin) Burwick; two sons, Max Burwick of Worcester and Zack Burwick of Boston; two daughters, Leigh wife of Matt Fawcett of Northboro and Jocelyn Burwick of Boston; his mother, Muriel (Kirschner) Burwick of Worcester; two brothers, David Burwick and his wife Robin of Millbury and Carl Burwick of Worcester; and two grandchildren, Ryan and Nate Fawcett. He was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey N. Burwick.
He was born in Worcester and was a son of the late I. Tutter Burwick and had lived in Shrewsbury the past 37 years.
He graduated from University of Pennsylvania and from Boston University Law School. He was a partner in the law firm of Burwick and Dynice in Leominster. He was on the Executive Board of the Worcester County Bar Association for many years.
He had a unique sense of humor. He was basically a big kid who loved his toys and gadgets. He lived and died by his Boston sports teams. He was a phenominal sports enthusiast. He loved spending time at the Cape with his family. His greatest joy and reasons for fighting his courageous battle against cancer, was to see his grandchildren Ryan and Nate.

Dr. Solomon Fleishman

Solomon J Fleishman MD, born in 1915 in Johannesburg South Africa, died peacefully on September 16th at the age of 97. His wife, Thelma (Herberg) Fleishman died in 2008. Dr. Fleishman is survived by his children and their spouses Jonathan and Claire Fleishman of Bonita Springs Florida, David and Ruth Fleishman of West Hartford, Vermont, Judith and Thomas Parker of Okemos, Michigan, and grandchildren Bethany, Anna and Ben Fleishman and Daniel and Gregory Parker.

A member of the Royal College of Physicians, Dr. Fleishman received his medical training at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and joined the South African Medical Corps during World War II. After the war, he spent two years in London at the Royal Post Graduate Medical School, Hammersmith, as well as the National Heart Hospital, and the Brompton Chest Hospital.

Immigrating to Boston Massachusetts in 1964, he continued his medical career at Tewksbury Hospital, Colombia Point Health Center and the Harvard Community Health Plan. Loved by both his patients and his colleagues, Dr. Fleishman personified professional integrity, compassion, and clinical expertise. Always eager to learn and engage in conversation and discussions, he will be remembered by family and friends for his energy, wit and enthusiasm for life.

Leonard Israel, 90, of 65 Zenith Drive, died in Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis on Thursday, Sept. 13th.
He leaves his wife of 65 years, Sydell (Tepper) Israel; a son, Mark Israel of South Hadley; two daughters, Judith Israel of Newton and Ellen Israel of Worcester; a brother, Martin Israel of Worcester; a sister, Florence Palmer of Middletown, CT and four grandchildren, Hannah and Benjamin and Alexander and Adam. He was predeceased by a brother, Stanley Israel.
He was a very caring husband, father and grandfather.
He was a home builder of affordable housing and he managed real estate.
He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and graduated from Cornell University.
He served in the Marines during World War II in the South Pacific.
He was a member of Temple Emanuel, The Jewish War Veterans, Worcester Probus Club, Rotary Club, and B’Nai Brith. He was an Eagle Scout and had been very active in Boy Scouts throughout the years. He received the Silver Beaver Award.
He was born in Worcester and was a son of Jacob and Sarah (Chase) Israel and was a lifelong resident of Worcester.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH in BETH ISRAEL SYNAGOGUE ON JAMESBURY DRIVE UNDER THE DIRECTION of RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery.
Memorial Observance for Sunday, September 16th will be announced at the time of the funeral.

Doris worked at Harvard School of Public Health. She was an avid Red Sox fan, a knitter and baker, and graduate of Girl’s Latin School and Simmons College. WORCESTER – Bertha (Solod) Goldstein, age 101, died on Thursday, August 30th, in Menorah Manor in St. Petersburg, FL.
Her husband Barnet Goldstein died in 1990. She leaves her son, Alden L. Goldstein and his wife Anne of Worcester and a granddaughter Vera wife of Eliot Ginsberg of Riverview, FL. She was predeceased by a brother, Abraham Solod and by a sister, Ceil Bell.
She was born in Worcester, a daughter of John and Vera (Saslow) Solod and lived here for 90 years before living in West Palm Beach, FL for 11 years, moving to St. Petersburg 1 1/2 years ago.
She was a bookkeeper for Mr. B’s Shoes on Mill St. in Worcester for many years.
She was a longtime member of Temple Emanuel and was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Jewish Healthcare Center.

Ralph Sigel

Ralph I. Sigel, 97, passed away on Monday, August 27 at Jewish Healthcare Hospice after a short illness. Born in Lowell, MA, Ralph was a lifelong Worcester resident.
He was the son of Benjamin David Sigel and Hattie (Perlman) Sigel. Ralph was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Shirley (Stein) Sigel in 1999; his sister Shirley Cotzin in 2011, and his infant son Richard in 1957. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Strogoff and her husband Joel; his son Alan Sigel and his wife Pam of Millbury; and his son Steven Sigel and his wife Sheryl of Grafton. He is also survived by his four grandchildren: Adam Strogoff and his wife Rachael, Amanda Strogoff and her partner Emily Hayes, Danielle Sigel, and Carly Sigel; and three great-grandchildren: Masho, Avery, and Redeit Strogoff, as well as by a loving extended family. He also leaves a dear friend, Carleen DeBlois.
Ralph graduated from Classical High School and from Northeastern Law School. He paid his way through law school by playing the saxophone in local bands. He was an attorney in Worcester for many years, more than 20 of them as Worcester’s sole Legal Aid lawyer, helping those who could not afford legal representation. He was awarded the St. Thomas More Ecumenical Award in 1974.
Ralph served in the U.S. Army in England and in France during World War II. During that time, one of his most enjoyable duties was to play the saxophone as a member of an Army band, which was created to improve relations between American and British troops in war-torn London.
Ralph was a member of Temple Emanuel, a former member of Rotary, and a former board member of the Family Service Organization of Worcester.
An Eagle Scout, Ralph later used his skills to enhance family camping experiences. He enjoyed swimming, sailing, cooking, and in recent years, painting landscapes. His paintings were displayed at the former Foothills Theater, and his work was also chosen for display at a juried show at the Fitchburg Art Museum. He and his wife Shirley traveled to France and Spain several times to visit museums and to experience new cultures and cuisines. He attended scores of soccer, baseball, and softball games, as well as track meets, to cheer on his children and grandchildren over the years, and he also coached his sons’ little league and Babe Ruth league teams. His greatest joy was to have his extended family gathered around him at his dining room table for a meal or a celebration. He always had a story to share about his life’s adventure.
In 1969 he became the director of the Lawyers’ Reference Service of the Worcester County Bar Association. He was honored by the Worcester County Bar Association in 1976.
For several years he taught at the Summer Sessions at Quinsigamond Community College.
Ralph was loved and respected for his kindness, fairness, and wisdom by those who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.
FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD at 1 PM on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29th in TEMPLE EMANUEL at 280 MAY ST. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON. Burial will be in B’Nai Brith Cemetery.

Schmidt-Edith (Straus), age 101, of Newton, MA on August 26, 2012. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Gerhard Schmidt. Devoted mother of Michael Schmidt, and Dr. Milton Schmidt and his wife Homai. Dear grandmother of Eric Schmidt and his girlfriend Analisa Svehaug, and Alice Schmidt and her husband Erik Duerr. Edith passed away peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by family. A holocaust survivor, she nonetheless maintained an optimistic view of life. An interest in art led her to volunteer at the Museum of Fine Arts. Energetic to the end, she enjoyed scrabble, history and painting. She will be missed. Graveside services at Roxbury Lodge Cemetery, 776 Baker St., West Roxbury, MA on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 2pm. Ruth E. (Milner) Medlinsky, 93, formerly of 11 Rosewood Drive, died on Sunday, August 26th in Eisenberg Assisted Living Residence.
Her beloved husband of 57 years, Abraham Medlinsky died on August 26th in 2004. She leaves her cherished son, Robert E. Medlinsky of Worcester; a niece, Barbara wife of Nevin Zablotsky of South Hero, VT; a cousin, Merna wife of Edward Siff of Coral Springs, FL and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and great grandnieces and great grandnephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Edwin Milner, a bombadier who was killed in World War II, a brother, Gerald Milner and by a sister, Gertrude Neviser.
She was born in Hartford, CT a daughter of Julius and Lena (Greenfield) Milner and had lived in Worcester for 66 years.
She studied fashion illustration at Pratt Institute in Brooklin, NY and for 20 years she was an instructor in oil painting at the YWCA.
She was a member of Temple Emanuel, Worcester Chapter of Hadassah and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Jewish Healthcare Center.
GRAVESIDE FUNERAL SERVICES will be held at 1PM on TUESDAY, AUGUST 28th at WORCESTER HEBREW CEMETERY on CEMETERY RD. in AUBURN UNDER THE DIRECTION of RICHARD PERLMAN of BREZNIAK RODMAN FUNERAL HOME of NEWTON.
