Sandy L. Weill of Bolton and formerly of Framingham, passed away February 3, 2013. She was 58 years old. Sandy grew up in Coney Island, Brooklyn and although spent most of her adult life in Massachusetts, always considered herself a New Yorker. From her love of the ocean to a good game of Skee-Ball, Sandy never lost her passion for a good time. The arts played a vital role in her life. A taste for Motown and hard rock developed into a love of disco while childhood art classes grew into a passion for painting and a lifelong creative outlet. Two of Sandy’s greatest influences were her father, Walter, from whom she inherited her contagious personality and passion for fine dining, travel and entertainment and her grandmother, Rose, whose love and attention served as the basis for her future parenting. Sandy received her B.A. from York College in Queens, NY and her Masters in Psychology from Suffolk University. She became a social worker and supervisor for the Department of Mental Health and later started a private practice in psychotherapy. In 1991, after the birth of her son, Steven, Sandy began a highly successful new career in sales and program management for high-powered I.T. companies. From developing the Computerworld Honors Program to becoming Senior Director of Executive Programs at IDG, Sandy had a fervent work ethic, exceeding goals and holding multiple sales records at the company to this day. She was held in high regard amongst her co-workers as not only talented and levelheaded but warm and engaging with a great sense of humor. The highlight and most important role in Sandy’s life was being a mother to her son, Steven, whom she loved dearly and was extremely devoted. They enjoyed a multitude of activities together but her love of music, the arts and food are what translated most. Sandy was also adored by her niece, Jill, who admiredher strength, ambition, wit and individuality and who always felt proud to call her “Aunt”. She touched many people’s lives with her care, compassion and innate ability to selflessly lend her ear and empathize with those around her. She faced her diagnosis of recurrent breast cancer with remarkable courage and handled her illness as she handled life— with continued resolve and a smile on her face. Sandy will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, sense of humor and caring that she imparted on the many who called her a friend. Daughter of the late Walter and Marsha (Cohen) Weill, she is survived by her beloved son, Steven Borden-Weill and his girlfriend, Michelle Gibbons; sister, Felice Schweitzer; loving niece, Jill Schweitzer and her husband, Tom Donahue; cousin Barry Cohen, his wife, Debbie and their children, Ariana and Myles; cousin, Kenny Cohen, his wife, Tiffany and their daughter, Rylee and countless, devoted friends. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 6th, 11:00AM, in the chapel at the Edgell Grove Cemetery, 53 Grove St, Framingham. Interment will follow. All are invited to Sandy’s late residence in Bolton afterwards. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dana Farber Cancer Institute in memory of Sandy Weill. Dana Farber, P.O. A lifelong resident of Brookline, Stanley graduated from Brookline High School in 1936, where he played the saxophone and sang in his own swing band, in addition to running his own sweet shop. He graduated from Harvard College in 1941 where he led Harvard’s top swing band for four years in a row, winning the coveted distinction of being named “Stan Brown’s Harvard Gold Coast Orchestra” each year. The band played professionally and was heard on the radio three nights a week. Bennie Goodman said Stan’s band was the “best college band in America” and invited the Stan Brown’s Gold Coast Orchestra to play on his radio show. While at Harvard, Stanley also rowed crew, played polo, and taught US History.
From 1941-1946 Stanley served as an officer in the Army, ending his tenure as Major. He was awarded a Legion of Merit for having created a test, on his own initiative, which he administered to 7,000 Nazi Prisoners of War to determine their political attitudes. This test was recommended to all Service Commands from that point forward.
After his Army service, he went from developing pre-fabricated homes to sales manager for the beverage Moxie. He then developed and named the coffee syrup, Coffee Time, which he marketed with his dear friend, Rudy Vallee. In 1954, he was hired as manager of The Sherry Biltmore Hotel, the first new hotel to open in Boston since WWII. He went on to become the manager and owner for 11 years of the Johnson’s Hummock’s Restaurant in Providence, RI, a 1,200 seat seafood restaurant which was the largest in New England. He then worked in real estate finance before buying Sands Memorials in Cambridge, at the time New England’s largest monument dealer and exclusive dealer in rose quartz boulders. While operating Sands, he purchased and operated several hotels and motels. After 11 years, he sold Sands Memorials to work exclusively in condominium and retail development. Before retiring, he developed a popular retail center in Plymouth, across from the Mayflower and next to one of his hotels.
Stanley was President of Cambridge Rotary in the 1970s and was honored with a Paul Harris Fellowship. As a life-long member of Temple Ohabei Shalom, he served as President of the temple in the early 1970s. He was on the Temple Board of Trustees for many years, after serving as the President of the Temple Brotherhood in 1963, which at that time was the largest Brotherhood in the US. He was President of the B’Nai Brith Realty Lodge in Massachusetts, The Providence, RI Executives Club and The Rhode Island Restaurant Association. He was also Vice President of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, Commander of the Zelermeyer Jewish War Veterans Post and was a Mason for over sixty years.
In his spare time, he wrote music and plays, painted, was an avid reader, sailed, wrote his autobiography and published a book for children on money and economics. WORCESTER – Lester Katz was born to Joseph & Anna M. (Dworman) Katz on May 3, 1923 in Worcester, and died at Jewish Healthcare Center on Thursday December 27th.
He is predeceased by his brother Milton and son Steven and is survived by his wife of 63 years Florence (Lisabitsky); his sister Doris Goff, his daughters Judith and Nancy, daughter-in-law Joey O’Connor-Katz, grandson Jordan O’Connor-Katz, son-in-law Mark Liebowitz, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lester lost both his father & his brother Milton at young ages and maintained a strong sense of responsibility to their surviving family members. He was a hard working, generous and loyal ‘famiy man’ with an insatiable love of life.
Lester’s career in the grocery business started out at his parents’ corner grocery store in Worcester’s Main South neighborhood. After World War II, where he served as a corporal in the communicaitons corp, he returned to start and run a small chain of food markets with his brother Milton and Mitchell & Phillip Sobel – beginning with Food Farm in Shrewsbury and later with IGA stores in Hudson and Marlboro, Massachusetts. Lester always held a strong loyalty and commitment to both his customers and employees.
Though Lester lived his entire life in Worcester, he and Florence traveled extensively throughout the world. Prior to visiting a destination he did thorough research to orient himself to its history & Culture. He regretted that the one continent he had neglected to visit was Africa. The situation was remedied somewhat during the last year of his life when he was blessed with the companionship of Mary Ampadu & Dorcas Sarpong from Ghana, and to Gabriel Kioi from Kenya, who shared their culture, their love, and their families with him and his.
He loved live theater and classical music. He enjoyed attending performances locally, in Boston, New York, and at Tanglewood. He believed strongly in exercise and for many years was seen walking around Tatnuck Square early in the day. Later, upon moving to the Eisenberg Assisted LIving, he continued an active pursuit of early morning exercise at the JCC next door, an inspiration to one and all.
Lester had an interest and curiosity about people. He had relationships with folks from all walks of life and maintained several friendships over eight decades. Lester was self educated and was an avid reader of non-fiction. He thoroughly read the New York Times daily. Lester was a member of the Worcester Art Museum and served briefly as a docent upon retirement. Over the years he acquired his own extensive collection and became somewhat of an expert of antique Asian art. He was also active in Rotary International & a proud member of both B’nai Brith and Jewish War Veterans.
Lester was a staunch supporter of President Obama. His intellect and sense of humor remained intact until the end of his life. When asked if he was comfortable, his response was alway, “I have a few bucks.”
Lester’s family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of the Eisenberg, Jewish Healthcare Center, JHC Hospice, and to Dr. Frank Domino for love and care over the years. They suggest making donations in Lester’s memory to the charity of one’s choosing.
