Melvin “Mal” Goldston

GOLDSTON, Melvin “Mal” Age 97, of Newton, on October 17, 2011. He was founder and President of Mal’s Discount Department Stores with seven locations in Massachusetts. He began his career selling merchandise on the road throughout New England. He later opened Mal’s Bargain Centers in Needham, Norwood and Hyde Park and then became one of the first retailers to open discount department stores in New England. Mr. Goldston’s greatest achievement was as patriarch of a warm, loving family in which he instilled his values of love, loyalty and determination. He suffered many losses in his life. He will join his beloved wife of 40 years, the late Sylvia “Sibby” (Rubin) Goldston, his late daughter Sandra Goldston and late brother Lester Goldston. He was the devoted partner of Joyce Dovinos. Devoted father of Saralee Mulcahey and her husband Vincent, Barbara and Joseph Lane. Dear grandfather of Wendy and Gus Prince, Steven and Kristie Rosenberg, Michael Rosenberg, Gary and Craig Mulcahey, Stacy Klickstein, Stacey and Sean Nugent. Loving great grandchildren Cameron Connor and Lyrissa Hall, Brandon, Kayla and Kevin Rosenberg, Oscar and Eli Mulcahey. Devoted brother of Dr. Irving Goldston and his wife Cynthia. Ralph L. Kolodny

Ralph L. Kolodny, professor emeritus of Boston University School of Social Work, died at Norwood Hospital on October 18, 2011. Born and raised in Fall River, MA. He graduated from Durfee High School, Brown University, Columbia University (MA in Sociology) and Boston University (MSS in Social Work). He was a veteran of World War 2, serving in the Pacific. He was a member of the Z.O. A. and Temple Beth El in Quincy, and  an author of over 50 articles in Social Work Journals, many of which have been translated and appeared in foreign journals. He worked as a Director of Department of Neighborhood  clubs of Boston Childrens’ Services Association for many years, and taught social work at Boston College and Boston University. He established the School of Social Work at Ben Gurion University in Israel. He attended Hebrew College in Brookline for many years, becoming fluent in Hebrew, and was an ardent student of the language.

He leaves his wife, Vivian (Orodenker) Kolodny;  his children, Dr. Jonathan Kolodny of Dedham and Miriam Kolodny Ben Nun of Tel Aviv, Israel; his grandchildren, Aaron, Nathan, Lauren Kolodny and Sam Ben Nun; his brother Bently G. Kolodny of Ny.

Services at Temple Beth David, 7 Clapboardtree Street, Westwood on Friday, October 21 at 1:00 pm. Following the interment at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon  memorial observance will be at the home of Dr. Jonathan Kolodny in Dedham through 8 pm and memorial observance will continue on Sunday at his late residence in Quincy, 2-4, 6-8 pm. SNYDERMAN, Paul,age 97,  Of Sharon formerly of Delray Beach, FL and Randolph on Oct 14, 2011. Beloved husband of   the late Lillian (Kaplan) Snyderman. Devoted father of Fredric Snyderman and his wife Gail of Sharon, Laurence R. Snyderman and his wife Carol of Marblehead, Stephen Snyderman of San Diego CA, Alan Snyderman of San Diego, CA. Edward K Snyderman and his wife Susan of Bridgewater, Cheryl J. Tobias and her husband Rick of Canton. and the late Harold C. Snyderman. Loving brother of the late Ruth Richardson and Harold Snyderman. Dear grandfather of 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Paul also leaves many dear friends and caregivers at the Epoch Senior Center where he lived the past  nine years. He was the “Mayor” of the community. He was so sharp for his 97 years that they elected him to serve as President of the Resident’s Council. Everyone came to Paul to talk, to listen to music, to learn, and to reminisce. He was the floor “leader”. The past several years while living there, he had learned so much, teaching himself to read and speak Hebrew, learning and chanting the prayers, reading his religious books. He passed his time, also, on the computer playing his Free Cell game that that approached almost 4000 wins, and going on line to U-tube and other old-time sites. He also composed a series of life’s memories that we will put together in a book to cherish always. Paul was always active and often enjoyed the many social activities at the home making the others join in, too. He will be dearly missed by all. Services at Temple Israel, 125 Pond Street, Sharon on Tuesday, October 18 at 11:00 am.  The family will be at the home of Cheryl and Rick Tobias on Tuesday until 9pm and Wednesday 1-4 and 6-9pm. GOLDENBERG, Doris Pearlman We sadly mourn the passing of Doris Pearlman Goldenberg on Monday, October 10, 2011. Passion characterized her life and kept her alive through her remarkable three and a half year fight against pancreatic cancer. She was a great lover of the arts, both in life and profession. She worked as part of the team creating Bear Rocks Resort in western Pennsylvania, and as interior designer for Parke Interiors in Pittsburgh. Her beauty and dynamic presence brought her many admirers in Palm Beach, Boston and Pittsburgh. But it was her integity, devotion and outspokenness that brought true respect and loyal friends. Above everything, she loved her family – her devoted husband Marvin Goldenberg, two daughters, Heidi Pearlman-Swartz and Jill Pearlman and her brother Lester Medvene. She was a loving wife to Robert C. Pearlman, who died in 1994. She is also survived by four grandchildren Rachel, Lisa, Eve and Jason and six of Marvin’s grandchildren.  Gertrude Naomi (Shore) Pearlman, 66, passed away surrounded by her family at her home in Framingham, MA. Trudy, as she is known to her family and friends, had endured a long battle with cancer for more than fifteen years.
 
Trudy graduated from Boston University in 1967 with a degree in teaching and was an educator for most of her life. She first started working with young children in the Newton, MA public school system and then in the early 1970s, after losing 70 lbs. on their program, became a lecturer/trainer for Weight Watchers. Sharing her own inspiring story while listening to others in need, Trudy worked her way up to become the regional manager, motivating thousands of Weight Watchers members to achieve their personal goals.
 
Trudy is survived by her husband of 46 years, Edward Neil Pearlman; her children, Andrea Sharon Pearlman Lindsey and Louis Ira Pearlman; her niece, Rebecca Ruth Stark and her grandchildren, Tyler Reed and Kendall Alyse Lindsey. She will be remembered with love by the Drevitch and Pearlman families, as well as a legion of friends from her neighborhood and Weight Watchers, whom she regarded as family.
 
She had been a longtime and active member of Temple Beth Sholom at 50 Pamela Road in Framingham, MA. Funeral services will be held there on Tuesday, October 4th, 2011 at 11 am.
 
In lieu of flowers; the family asks that a tree be planted in Israel through the Jewish National Fund or a donation be made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Center for Sarcoma and Bone Oncology in her honor.  Arrangements by Brezniak-Rodman Chapel, Newton.

SHULMAN, Leon Of Dedham, formerly of Newton on August 24, 2011. Beloved husband and best friend of Cynthia (Brezniak) Shulman for 59 years. Dear son of the late David and Sarah Shulman. Devoted father of Steven Shulman and his wife Debra Yanofsky, Ken Shulman and his wife Valerie, Bill Shulman and his wife Wendy. Papa Lee to Harrison, Andrew, Sophie and Simon Shulman. Loving brother of Robert Shulman and the late Ethel Bronstein and Freda Feins Perlman. Services at Temple Emanuel 385 Ward St. Newton on Friday August 26, 2011 at 12:00 noon. Following the interment at Baker St. West Roxbury family and friends are invited to Temple Emanuel until 5:00 pm. Memorial observance will be held at the home of Steven Shulman and Debra Yanofsky Saturday evening, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday 2-4 pm, 7-9pm and then continuing Wednesday and Thursday at the home of Bill and Wendy Shulman 2-4, 7-9pm. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to Combined Jewish Philanthropies Shulman Acharai Fund 126 High St. Boston, MA 02110

Brenner-Leo (Yehuda) of Stoughton, on August 21, 2011. Beloved husband of Gertrud (Tamar) (Zloczower). Devoted father of Miriam Blankstein and her husband Larry of Sharon and Nurit Berman and her husband Mark of Williamstown. Dear grandfather of Rachel and Matthew Breman, Alanna and Jared Kotler, Rebecca and Jeremiah Sisitsky and Noah and Mollie Berman. Great grandfather of Sabastian and Aviva Breman, Benjamin and Lev Kotler and Madelyn Sisitsky. Graveside services at Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon on Wednesday, August 24 at 10:45 am. Memorial observance at the home of  Miriam and Larry Blankstein on Wednesday until 9 pm , Thursday 1-4, 7-9 pm and Friday morning 9-12 Noon. Memorial observance will continue at Leo’s late residence on Sunday and Monday 1-4, 7-9 pm.
